Mostly it is used for dealing with log files that have become too big.
but.... why?
-
@jinpa said in Random thought of the day:
If the truncate command had been designed to have a parameter to keep the last lines, in many cases people wouldn't have to bother with log rotation at all.
tail -n 1 log.log > log.log
If you don't have
tail
well... I'm sure there's ash
script version that does it...Edit: And, well, of course there are s who would be more than willing to jump in and provide solutions...

@Tsaukpaetra said in Random thought of the day:
tail -n 1 log.log > log.log
Will lead to bash truncating the file before tail can open it.

true, but you could do this, assuming the log utility does not keep the log file open between logs and you are willing to accept that you may lose a few entries if they are written as this script executes:
tail -n100 log.log > log.next; mv log.next log.log

But it successfully reduced the size!

You could teach a unit of history based on this album...it's quite grown on me.
-
@jinpa said in Random thought of the day:
I cannot think of any reason (apart from pathological examples) why someone would want to keep the lines at the beginning of the file.
It's like that because truncation works by directly setting the length of the file to a value that is shorter than it previously was. The only common(-ish) form of truncation is to zero length. But truncation is rare with logging; rotation (on various types of schedules) is far more common.
Log rotation is tricky to get right, at least without the original logger closing the file after each write (incurring a cost of reopening each time). At least there's no problem with multiple writers when using classic Unix semantics; append mode makes that side of things easy.

Because of the afore-mentioned deficiency - not the other way around.

We finally have the technology to build Linguo the grammar-correcting robot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmMaEUl-6DUI should make this an app. I'm sure it would be widely popular.

Blind people can't do advanced math.

Blind people can't do advanced math.
I assume because they can't visualize it? Or some other reason? Much of advanced math does not require visualization, e.g., category theory.
-
@jinpa it doesn't require visualizing, but it does require reading bullshit notation made up on the spot by whoever wrote the paper (so good luck with text to speech).

@boomzilla I realized I was most likely wrong in the technical sense - still, they have it orders of magnitude harder, and I imagine some newer branches of math are completely off limits for them if they don't have an expert on the subject in their vicinity. I'd make a completely uninformed guess that with modern computer technology and accessibility tools, biology might be more blind-friendly than math.

All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle and then thin again at the far end.

Almost a normal distribution.

They're off limits for me too, and I'm neither blind nor a mathematician! What a coincidence!

@dkf it's one thing to not have the brain power, but here the only barrier to understanding is communication. It's an "I could easily run a marathon if only I knew the path" situation.

You find the stewardesses' decompression instructions offensive? Baby cries? Occasional conversations of others? Or do they help with the pressure?

I dislike the noise that is loud enough to damage sensitive ears.
you think you puny humans have problems when exposed to loud noises? well think about how we animalkin find your machines? our ears that are more sensitive than yours, and that have a much wider range of response than yours so that we can hear the noises your machines make that are too high for you to hear, and because they are too high for your ears you do nothing to dampen them, because they do not affect you.
This is why I bring ear plugs. so that when we land once more I can still hear.

1kg of white sugar costs about 0,80€ and has about 3800 kcal, which is enough to survive for 2 days. Making it by far the cheapest "food" that exists. If I could live on it I'd be spending 12€ a month on food.

Expired food is even cheaper. Just ask @Tsaukpaetra.

i don't think even waifu2x can rescue that tumblr screenshot...... i think the only solution at this point is to find the original and get a fresh sceenshot of it.
