Any Star Wars EU fans here?

  • The website that had the online version is apparently dead, but I found here a link to someone who mirrored the files some time ago, and that still works. Even better, the files still work without a hitch! I guess there is something to say about compatibility of java? The main "engine" is actually an installer (Windows, although in the past I remember playing on Linux -- maybe you could just copy the files after installation?), there is another pack with the circuits (the engine only contains one circuit) that you have to manually copy to the right directory.

There are some glitches and it's probably hard to play without knowing the rules, but otherwise I managed to play a race in less than 10 min, so it's a quick way to get familiar. There is apparently a possibility to play with remote players, no idea how it works, I only ever tried playing alone (against the computer).

Start another thread if you're interested and want more details...

I think it's worth it, but don't take it as a serious racing car simulation game.

It sounds a bit like the old FASA game, Circus Imperium, but with race cars instead of chariots pulled by snarling beasts. That one is great fun too, especially because you can technically win even if your charioteer is no longer even alive. What counts is who comes across the finish line first, not what condition you happen to be in …

Also, IME the game is funnier when you can have at least 6-8 players

I would expect so, yes. Games like these are usually more fun if there’s more competition.

Seems somewhat similar in principle, yes. Formule Dé is a tiny bit more recent (1991 vs. 1988) but at that time there was limited exchanges between board game communities, so it's hard to say whether one was an inspiration for the other or not. In any case, it's fun to play, which is all that matters!

I agree. Sometimes the play mechanics of the game kind of breaks down when you reach the number of players required to make it fun (i.e. either playing a turn is too long, or it becomes entirely chaotic and breaks any attempt at strategy), but this is not the case here.

Circus Maximus and Speed Circuit are also similar and predate them both, though with less randomness in base speed. (They have other random mechanics.)

This is why my favourite card game is Fluxx. Good luck playing strategically beyond your own current turn :)

  • And then the murders began.

Or even less, if one of the current rules is Play All.

Sure, Lucas cribbed some of it for the prequels (e.g. the name - but not the pronunciation - of the galactic capital)

What was the pronunciation supposed to be? And how could you tell?

I always thought it was "Core-uh-skont". It may have been pronounced in some of the 1990's video games, but I can't recall any specific instance. I was definitely surprised when the second 'c' was pronounced as s (or silent) instead of k in The Phantom Menace.

  • And then the murders began.

@boomzilla “cor-us-KONT” is my best approximation. The main point is no silent second c (though slightly different from @mott555’s rendition, I think). The pronunciation was consistent in audiobooks and video games prior to TPM. (Plus, it’s derived from the real world “coruscate”.)

    Ah, hadn't considered those.

  • Anyone played The Old Republic MMO? I'm reading that the story is an important part, but I'm only interested in the story. Can you skip the PvP etc and mostly stick to the story missions?

I'm contemplating getting into the Star Wars EU,

Heard that Star Wars is thinking about leaving the EU, so I think you should hurry up!

It's been quite a bit since I played that but if they haven't changed it completely, yes, you can stick to the story missions.

  • @marczellm I played it quite a bit on launch and occasionally log in to see what's going on. It's a Massively Single Player Online RPG; you can ignore everyone else in the game completely and experience all of the 8 main stories and much of the other content. Originally you had to do a lot of side questing to keep up with XP, but they changed it so you can (mostly?) stick to the story missions.

I would have preferred a KOTOR 3, but it's better than nothing.

As I was a subscriber for a long time I don't know how annoying it is for someone starting without all of the legacy benefits. They tied a lot of things to the Coin system and I haven't followed how that has shaken out over the years.

  • @Parody Thanks, that's great news!

I'm contemplating getting into the Star Wars EU,

In a galaxy far far away, in a time long long ago........ brexit is still trying to happen.

Just writing to confirm that's absolutely true, after playing through Prologue and Chapter 1 of two classes already.

  • So I read a huge number of these in middle school, like I think young jedi knights, most of x-wing, etc. I really started to get sick of them as time went on, though. New jedi order was interesting, but the more I read the less I liked of all the books. There was something that fatigued me about the writing. They all had this odd tendency to try to make things more and more gritty. I tried other series as well unrelated to star wars, but I actually grew too hate scifi within 3 years of starting all this.

Asimov's stuff, frank Herbert, and honestly even star wars 4-6 are all still awesome, so at one point I thought I'd try again. People kept telling me this thrawn guy was cool and made you kind of feel sorry for the imperials somewhat, and that it was the best of the star wars EU stuff. So I read them.

WHY would anyone ever recommend that horrible mess? It's not well written. It doesn't have a good villain. It has a supposed super genius villain who loses to dumb tricks, and his supposed genius is so incredibly horribly dumb... This is a genius written by an absolute moron. Ugh.
