Status: Just helped out the new-ish (4 months ago) hire with some Visual Studio problems. They're not even in my group / working on the same product, but since I'm otherwise surrounded by mathematicians, I got to do the hand-holding.
Unrelated to this, in the browser window, I noticed a tab open on YouTube about "How the C++ linker ... something something". And from what I could tell from the still image, the video apparently didn't show any code / the computer screen but a guy's face talking.I personally would prefer reading a reference page with maybe screenshots or at least watching a tutorial instead of watching a guy narrate some shit to me. Kind of makes me feel old.

It's the norm these days. Why have a text where you can search for the specific thing you need when you can watch a 40 minutes video just to have your answer somewhere in it?

This is actually a(nother) pet peeve of mine now. Every tutorial after 2016 appears to be a youtube video with no link to the code. I can't phantom how this is of any use to anyone. Give me the code and let me play with it. Listening to you prattle on is of no use to me. Also... what happened to books? Is it just me or are books quickly disappearing? If I could find a book on aem I might not of disliked it so much. Or I would of packed it in sooner.
STATUS Nothing to report.

When a man has anal/doggystyle sex with a chick facing a window then trades places with his buddy who is hiding in the room without the chick realizing. The guy then proceeds to go outside and wave at the chick who is looking out the window. She then asks herself "If he's out there, who is fucking me?"

@DogsB One day the whole MSDN will be replaced by a single huge video
of Nyan Cat, and then a year or two later a (maybe) searchable index site will be added that links you to specific time codes in the video.

Those links will work for a few hours, and then MS will reorganise the way all the links on their site work, again, and the timecode links will cease to be relevant. They'll probably reorder the frames in the video too.

The plan was always to make money. The problem with making money on a social App though, is you gotta have active users or the profit model doesn't work.

Status: Trying to watch this new Sci-Fi show "Another Life".
Why is it that they're always trying to "spice" things up by doing all this interpersonal drama shit? For example, the rationale behind replacing the original captain of the ship was that he was "too hot-headed". And then they leave him on the ship as 2nd in command. And then he actually mutinies (and nearly puts the ship into the next star). And when she doesn't push him out of an airlock for that (or at least confine to quarters), he tries to kill her.
And a major part of the crew blames her for that - "Oh God, you killed him!"
Yeah, the fucker went after the captain with a knife. What was she supposed to do?
Other notable incidents of passing the ball of stupid:
- Opening your visor on an alien planet just because it has 19% oxygen in the atmosphere
- The crew consisting of a bunch of morons with volatile tempers (just what you want on a starship flying towards alien contact)
I hate that kind of shit. Give us something reasonable and not this idiocy where the crew seems to have been picked out of a hat consisting of highschool dropouts.
At least they haven't suggested nuking the artifact on Earth yet or something like that (always a good idea, that. Let's anger the guys who can drop planetoids on Earth!)
-
@Rhywden And now a second crew member flipped out and tried to kill the captain. Jesus Christ.
Please note that they supposedly had six months to prepare for the mission with the crew already existing before that.

This reads like a recap of a Rimworld game.
-
@Dragoon And now a nosy "reporter" (back on Earth) turned up which I would have punched in the face after about 1 second of her opening her mouth.
Because this reporter supposedly threw the captain under the bus for an incident earlier.
And somehow the captain's husband still talks to hear.
Are these people all retarded?

@Rhywden said in The Official Status Thread:

Yes, I call that the Hollywood effect.
A show about zombies? Superheroes? Space exploration? Mysterious ancient artifacts? Doesn't matter. The plot is just an excuse to have characters acting like complete morons and causing interpersonal drama. That's what every series is about.
-
@anonymous234 said in The Official Status Thread:

That's all that the junior scriptwriters know how to write. They also try to add it to factual shows. Robotic exploration of the outer planets? Advances in medicine? Ancient history? The news? Still all full of needless characters acting like complete morons and causing interpersonal drama…
-
@dkf I rather liked the Mockumentary "Space Odyssey" - there they detailed an exploratory manned mission to several planets of our solar system and managed to make the drama believable.

Status: It keeps getting dumber and dumber...
The Expanse this is most definitely not.
So, this ship has an Alcubierre FTL drive and they're using the energy build-up in front of the ship as a weapon in the last episode (this build-up is actually a thing). They also discover that those Aliens are playing Cybernetic Bodysnatchers in order to cause a Genocide? Of course the onboard AI is able to override the programming of the alien implants. It also makes precisely zero sense for a space-faring civilization to engage in a war with another space-faring civilization - because you simply need to drop out of Alcubierre FTL with your ship pointing towards a planet to sterilize the visible surface of said planet...
... and of course the Aliens have Death Star level weapons which makes even thinking of engaging in a war even more moronic.
-
@Rhywden
But how does it work out for the miners?
-
@Rhywden said in The Official Status Thread:

Bubble or doughnut config? And are there links about that γ build up and the differences in that between the configurations, and in the doughnut config how do you prevent the crew from being fried during flight...
Inquiring minds...
Filed under: Whoa! Select-Quote worked this time!
-
@M_Adams Bubble. But more like the Star Trek shield kind not the "real" Cutting out a part of space-time and move that kind because they can still see where they're going (and are also able to change course).
And it's a weird-ass type as well because in the first episode they're doing a slingshot around a sun to build up speed? Yeah, I know. Also, the writer responsible for that abomination didn't quite understand (or didn't bother to read up on) how the slingshot maneuver actually works because they want to do two rounds around the star.
Later episodes have them jumping straight to FTL so it's obviously only there to create drama.
-

It only takes one — the producer.

Truth in TV. That's a pretty accurate description of the world.

Doesn’t the bubble version pretty much act a spherical γ death flood that would pretty much vaporize the ship (along with sterilization of the star system) when it disengages?

From how I read the original paper it's only the particles moving into the same direction as the ship which pose a problem.
