Yes, some jobs, when performing a background check, also perform a credit check. I know this because WTPharm's onboarding paperwork that a new contractor/technician/whatever needs to fill out includes a form specifically saying that you permit the credit check.
Sounds like a nice Catch-22.

@kazitor I don't have any pliers that would cut it. Only bend, and the point of orthodontic wire is to not stay bent.
-
@pie_flavor I sympathize. Once I had wire that went past my teeth alongside my gums, looked fine, but once I closed my mouth it would ever so subtly prod the corner of my mouth where cheek meets bone.
Fun times...

Leaving stuff broken for everyone because some people are fucked over by their service provider? That's backwards.

Status: Seems everyone here is getting fucked over by the mandatory password change hitting all accounts atm. And because the error message is the oh-so-helpful "wrong username/password" instead of the correct "your password has expired" it also means the admin has got a bunch of extra work manually resetting passwords because of the confusion. Good job, IT. Our new SSO services are really working perfectly...
Yesterday I went to the hospital for a checkup of my legs. The problem is I'm in a "calm" period where I don't easily get the problems I was there for, which made it harder to check. Although the exercising, bending and prodding did cause pains in my right knee. Seems all my issues are more pronounced on the right side of my body.
Afterwards I had lunch with my sister, who works at the hospital. And because I had an hour to kill before the bus home I got to visit her at her department. I got to see a few VERY naked breasts. As in, just the breast tissue without any skin or muscles or the rest of the body. (She works at the pathology department.) They were cutting out cancer samples from them. And painting them in bright primary colors. So now I know how stuff works there!
I also got a message after lunch about how they had suspended all activities at work after lunch due to the blizzard so people could get home safely, because buses were being cancelled left and right. Except for a slight delay, buses worked perfectly for me, though.

Can't you point them towards the new recommendations by the NIST which state that a mandatory time-based expiry must not be used anymore?

We are stuck with mandatory expiry because we have to be PCI-DSS compliant. Best-practices meets best-bureaucracy, I'm sure the requirements will be updated sometime this century...

Well, they're currently still able to log in and everything. From their end Oculus is working fine.

@Cursorkeys Ah, the wonders of cargo-cult security. That's not aimed at you, of course.
I sometimes despair over this "We've had this rule for several years now. Let's not have a look if it actually has the effect we want it to have!" mindset.

Now that you mention it, I know that applies here (.nl) as well, at least for certain jobs. The argument is that a history of debt increases the chance you'll be corruptible. So this is applicable if you are trying to become a police or customs officer, for example.
As far as I know though the Dutch BKR primarily registers failure to pay off your loans or contracts, and these registrations are time-limited.

STATUS
Doing code reviews and everything is a fucking static util. Don't people know how to organise their code and inject it as necessary. I remember spring code that wasn't much better though. Everything was a service and then a class with a constructor for 17 services. The art of breaking up code into small self-contained chunks appears to be dying. I didn't even look at the
testcoverage code.

@Gąska said in The Official Status Thread:
At least they have it somewhat standardized. Here in Europe, they're pulling all the same tricks, but every bank has its own system and the calculated scores are hidden from the clients. Although on the other hand, credit score in Europe is only ever needed for loans and related banking services, whereas in USA it also affects your ability to rent apartments.
Credit score is not standardised in Europe. Different agencies don't even use the same criteria.

I'm about 11 percent done with the user-facing interface for inter-player trading. If I can get the fishing pole to behave, that's about 43 percent done too!

@Tsaukpaetra Quick question.
IfWhen TimeFire goes belly-up, where does all this code you're been working on go?
-
Status: Why did I do this? And why isn't it working?
-
@hungrier Update: My controller is soft-bricked but apparently I can install windows 10 in a vm to restore it. If not I can supposedly go to a game store and plug the controller into an xbone to restore it. Either of these things is exactly what I wanted to do, and not at all a giant annoyance for no reason.
-
@hungrier Also, finding an iso of version 1511 is a pain in the ass because MS doesn't offer it anymore. Here's hoping 1803 will work...?

Huh, apparently I don't have that version on hand anymore.
But Shirley, any version past that should work so long as it has the XBone app?
-
@Tsaukpaetra So far I tried 1803 and it doesn't work. I think it has to be that version for
-
@hungrier Update I've now found a sketchy download site with supposedly version 1511 on it. Which also means I'll be reinstalling another Win10 vm again, assuming it isn't actually a box full of live spiders instead of a windows iso.
-
edit: not sure if this is the same sketchy site you already found or not.
-
@hungrier sorry, I'd offer my copy but apparently I did some spring cleaning and don't have it in hot storage...
-
@loopback0 That's the one. The download is coming from software-download.microsoft.com, so maybe it isn't that sketchy?
-

I'd assume it's OK if it's coming from Microsoft but it makes me wonder why Microsoft don't make the ISO easier to find if they're hosting it anyway?
-
@loopback0 I assume it's a similar reason to why they have a firmware updater that bricks your controller.

Or even why they have a controller that needs its software updating.
