Probably because the one has been under development since long before the GH acquisition, and they can't really go around killing GH features this close to the closing.

Okay not to be that guy but AWS had this for fuckin ages. S3 could be used to turn blob storage to host a static site too. Azure is a tad bit late IMO.

Oh it is very handy. There are very light workloads that are built on top of Angular or React and usually the production build which is a bunch of files are just thrown into storage and you can just configure it to be a static site. No server not a thing and the costs are unbelievably cheap.

Late? I’ve been hosting my site for free on Azure for about 3 years now

Staying on-topic has never been a requirement to post here :-)
I was just pointing out that I have been hosting static content backed by blob storage for years now on Azure. It's just hidden behind Azure Web Apps.
In my understanding, the new offering basically removes the VM in between the http endpoint and the storage. So one infrastructure item less for those who don't need dynamic content. But it doesn't offer any new use case, it just makes simple use cases cheaper to host.
