@MrL donations? Simple industry interest in keeping them alive? Not everything must be for profit you know.
From my experience free services come in 3 variants:
- You Are A Product.
- Open source/donationware barely usable crap.
- Government public services, which are invariably complete shit.
2 and 3 don't rob me of privacy, true, but instead they waste my time and strain my nerves. Not better from my perspective.
Besides, I meant big mass-user services, like search, mobile OSes, cloud storages, etc, not some bored with life nobody releasing 100th notepad clone 'for free!!'.

So? As long as it doesn't track you, it is blind advertising. I have no problems with that, that's how things were done up to a couple of decades ago. I have no big problems with being a product either actually.

It depends. Wikipedia is a big mass-user service and it works very well. And government public service is not necessarily utter shit, also because it is essentially a paid service. The BBC is one of the best broadcasters on the planet, for sheer quality. It gets harder with very data intensive stuff, like social networks, but the real roadblock is the fact that you need people to exist on the social network for it to be appealing.

there are both paid and free options that do not make you a product
Uhuh, and they make money exactly how?
Begging, mostly.

No, it doesn't.

No it isn't.
The BBC is one of the best broadcasters on the planet, for sheer quality.
That's the popular belief, but not what I heard from people who actually watched BBC.

I watch the BBC from time to time. I prefer other broadcasters (Channel 4 for example, but only because they target me better) but I cannot deny that the quality of the programming (also from a technical standpoint) is very high.

What are the chances those people you're talking about who watch BBC, say BBC sucks only because they don't watch anything else and thus don't know how much other channels suck in comparison?

All marketing departments are full of shit.
Plus they got rid of the annoying "what's a computer" girl from the previous advert so this one is automatically better.

I'm pretty sure it's still the best political news public channel of all public channels on the planet. It's not their fault they have to run stories on their own employers.

They should watch Italian TV. It's teeeerrible. Even the photography is terrible. It's a pity because we used to be better (Italia '90 was quite innovative from this point of view, for example).

The hams and cheeses you get in the UK (the "regular" ones anyway, not the fancy ones) are utter shite. And the bread is passable at best. You're fucked either way.
The good thing about Italy (well, at least my neck of the woods) is that the regular food is the fancy stuff, and the pleb stuff is regular stuff.

Funnily enough, they (used to) say that the British national dish was curry.
I worked as a waiter for a relative in England over a decade ago (I was 16-17, can't remember). He's Italian, but the utter disrespect he had for the British was amusing. He had a restaurant in a coastal resort (!) up in the North, and he'd routinely buy low grade ingredients (the ones they'd pay you to take away), cheap wine from Italy and fill the empty bottles with even cheaper wine, and all sorts of shenanigans. "These shits don't know what's good anyway". I don't know whether they did know or not, I don't remember seeing any repeat customers but then again I didn't really pay much attention, as at one point we were severely understaffed and I had to literally run while taking orders, getting the dishes, clearing tables, serving drinks, etc.

It's an encyclopedia. They are supposed to be informative, not academically reliable. You're not supposed to glean knowledge from an encyclopedia, it's just a starting point. For that purpose, Wikipedia is very good and it works very well.
Why not?
You don't choose to pay or not.
Google's employees also get paid, but g search is not a paid service, isn't it?Irrelevant.

I'm half-sure that the US puts sugar in their cheese. They also seem to think that 6 months makes for extremely matured cheese…

That, and because anything on Wikipedia should include a citation to a source that you could cite.
Citing from Wikipedia itself is just lazy.
