Polish Man Gets Mad Because He Made A Bad Deal

@Gąska And? The government makes those things money. You do not.
-
@Rhywden and about your "state before the deal > state after the deal". Do you consider the ability to grant the license to create the first ever video game adaptation of your book series to be part of that state? Because he definitely had it before, and he definitely lost it when he signed the deal with CDPR.
-
@Rhywden said in Polish Man Gets Mad Because He Made A Bad Deal:
@Gąska And?
I take that as a yes. In which case, I am absolutely right in saying I do possess money in my wallet but don't possess money in my bank account.
-
@Kian said in Polish Man Gets Mad Because He Made A Bad Deal:
I doubt he has a case, it's not like it was an instant boom and the guys screwed him over. If anything, he tried to take advantage of them, getting a quick payout before they went bankrupt.
Ding, ding, ding!
And to be fair, that was a good deal at the time. There was already an attempt to make a Witcher game back in 1997 or so that never ended up being released, CD Projekt Red hasn't had a single game under their belt, and the Witcher universe was completely unheard of abroad and a bit of a joke in Poland outside of the fantasy circles due to the pretty awful movie and TV series.
If I were Sapkowski, I'd probably accept a crate of beer for the rights and go my merry way. The project was all but poised to either fail or just be a small Polish curio.

@Maciejasjmj said in Polish Man Gets Mad Because He Made A Bad Deal:

Huh? It always seemed extremely popular to me. Almost all people I know between 15 and 50 years old have read at least one book from the series, and everyone seemed to like it. The TV adaptations are universally considered awful, yes, but the books are highly regarded by all people. Maybe things are different where you're from, I don't know.

I don't really recall most people without interest in fantasy in the first place having much of an exposure to the Witcher beyond the TV series. Maybe "a joke" is a bit harsh since those were pretty good books even with the overall franchise going nowhere, but the books were definitely more of a cult classic than, say, Game of Thrones.
-
@Maciejasjmj I have the opposite experience - GoT only being talked about as TV series and never as book. Go figure.
-
@Gąska Well, Game of Thrones isn't a book series. A Song of Ice and Fire is a series, and A Game of Thrones is the first book in the series.
-
@Rhywden said in Polish Man Gets Mad Because He Made A Bad Deal:
@boomzilla I would define it as "missed opportunity" but not as "risk".
Define better.

I know that. And the only reason I know that is because there was this one weird girl in high school who was seriously into GRR Martin (as well as K-pop and several other hobbies no one else had).

No joke, started playing the other day, get into a dialogue, 2 choices later - bed shaking.
I wasn't even trying, the option I picked seemed like the "not being a dick" one, which I picked because that's what I decided to RP this time around.
In actuality, there was more dick than, presumably, in the other option. Oh well.

Timing of the claim is also not random - Gwent comes out of beta in few weeks.
Which is a bit ironic perhaps, considering that Gwent (at least the version in the Witcher game) is pretty much a copy of Condottiere (with some extensions, admittedly). Too bad that the original Condottiere is bloody impossible to get hold of these days.

you'd never heard of that? It was the main antagonist in Minecraft Story Mode, dude.

@pie_flavor when Minecraft first came out, I was already 15. Is it really that surprising I know next to nothing about it?
-
@Gąska you're only 24? TIL. And yes.
-
@pie_flavor really? What next, are you going to get bewildered by my lack of knowledge about Cars franchise too?
-
@Gąska Do you think Minecraft's fanbase is the same age as the Cars fanbase?
-
@pie_flavor the only person I've seen obsessively playing Minecraft was my younger cousin, who was also big on everything Cars.

The only person I've seen who actually prefers Linux is my physics teacher. Therefore, nobody outside of physics prefers Linux.
-
@pie_flavor you're mostly correct.

@MrL Saw it too when I was googling for the link above. Unfortunately to see the price (or order), you need to sign up for an account, and, let's face it: .
I have an old copy somewhere as well...
Edit: It's apparently USD30 to pre-order. Bleh... pre-order.

Yeah, 30$ for the game, which is fine, and 50$ for shipping to Poland which is... not.

I've got a few colleagues who prefer Linux (assuming you're talking about non-servers here). They're CS so that's almost like Physics, yes?

Thanks, bought.
Insane shipping cost are an irritating characteristic of many US shops.
"Hey, free shipping inside US! Have fun shopping with us! What!?!? Europe?!?!? That will be 80$ and 2 months waiting. FUCK YOU!"
-
@MrL I mean, it does have to cross the ocean to reach you. Not to mention tariffs and other stuff that's only relevant when crossing international borders.
-

Nah, you can get shipping costs as low as 10$ in some shops. It's just carelessness choosing delivery company.
-
@Gąska The only time I bought stuff from the US, I got a separate envelope, via a different carrier, from the package carrier, with a completely undecipherable duty bill. Took me literally 15 minutes just to find out what I had to pay and how to pay it.
-
@PleegWat Last time we got something from the US, DHL (I think it was DHL?) was very helpful to fill in and pay the duty.
Helpful, as in "you have to pay about EUR 5 in duties, you can only do so through our entirely automated website, where we add a EUR 15 surcharge
just because we canfor administrative costs".(I don't remember the exact amounts, but it was something like that)
-
@PleegWat said in Polish Man Gets Mad Because He Made A Bad Deal:

Yeah. Had that happen too. One time, I just got the bill for the duty and the administrative fees. The actual package had been lost. Good times.
The irritating part is that even if you find somebody in the US who is shipping at a reasonable rate, you never really know what you will end up paying afterwards. Sometimes it's nothing - the package is delivered by the local postal service as usual (even better, you can pick it up at one of their pick-up locations at leisure). Other times, you get the undecipherable bill that hits you with import duties and a bunch of administrative fees. And then they will of course not deliver it in any reasonable way at any reasonable time.

That's a second or third wave Minecraft player. It was played by adults initially. Well, or at least not just primarily small children. Or for small children. Sigh.

funny you should say this -- just the other day I found out that they're milking the game of thrones tv show for all it's worth and turning into an entire series of books...I don't have high hopes anyways, since the written adaptations of movies/tv series are never any good.
