If more of my stuff worked under Linux I'd move entirely to CentOS like a shot. Windows 10 is just getting more annoying. They haven't even finished the half-Metro clusterfuck that they started. The control panel is still split in two places. Stop moving deckchairs and fix stuff!

@Cursorkeys I got the exact same popup a couple hours ago except it said saturday for me. Pretty weird considering that I've never ever used Cortana ever.

@heterodox I don't find this option anywhere in my settings (I guess the OEM has removed it?). But remember that before the upgrade to Android 8, I could get everything I wanted on the lock screen (well, since I had an overlay I don't know if it worked with notifications, but the overlay certainly did).
It could be that during the upgrade, Huawei not only decided to hide this option but also to always turn it on, fucking me ever deeper in the process.
Given your description of the behavior (sounds exactly like what my phone does and I have that setting on) and the fact that Huawei did other things like removing access to quick settings from the lock screen, it seems extremely likely that they locked it on, yes.
Sounds like next time you get a phone you should avoid Huawei at all costs. That and/or try to get a custom ROM on your phone (returning it to stock or putting something like CyanogenMod on it).

I'm not planning on changing any time soon, so by the time I get there things will have had many chances to change, either in Huawei or in other phone makers. Statistically and as far as software is concerned, I think it'll be for the worse.
My previous phone never updated from Android, uh, 4 I think. I still have it and use it as a glorified alarm clock so I'm not only talking from memory, and I don't think it would make any difference to my daily usage if my current phone still used that one. In terms of the OS itself, there is absolutely nothing I can see that has appeared since then. OK, maybe there are 1 or 2 things, but not much.
That and/or try to get a custom ROM on your phone (returning it to stock or putting something like CyanogenMod on it).
I might do it one day. But then again I will have to get used to a different set of , not necessarily that much better than what I currently have on balance...

Yeah, my idiot phone manufacturers decided to be "brave" and make it a solid color. Fucking useless...

They're moving slowly. They didn't want to change everything at once, but Settings is getting more and more functionality and Control Panel is deferring to Settings more and more. Once all the functionality is moved over, they'll remove Control Panel.

I have to wonder what they'll do for certain "legacy" applications that use "control panel applets" for their configuration....
-
@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:

You really are young.
The only reason they removed the Windows 3 version of the Fonts control panel in Vista is because it wouldn't run on a 64-bit CPU.
That said, Microsoft has removed both Briefcase (also back in Vista, IIRC) and Home Group, so maybe it's a "new Microsoft". We'll see.

Yeah, right. Backwards compatibility will never allow that.

Why wouldn't it? It uses shaders all the time. Caching them only makes sense.

Looking forward to it. But, apparently, so far, it has not done so, despite definitely having compiled several thousand shaders in the process of getting this build slave up to snuff.

I'm not one to talk, but so far this has indeed been my experience, especially since I don't have many new games that might possibly attempt to make a stab at supporting it. I suppose it's primarily intended for games that have a lot of user-generated maps and content that might need a more dynamic shader cache than what can be shipped in a build? Who knows...

Or whatever the hell it's called now. LineageOS. Same diff.

@Tsaukpaetra If another Source game ever occurs, I suppose that'll use the Steam caching feature. But that's pretty hypothetical.

Huh?
Aways just 'shopping' whenever I've heard anyone talk about it.
As in, 'I need to go shopping', 'can you get the shopping?' etc...
Sometime 'food shopping', I guess so you don't get confused and buy a TV by accident...
-
@Cursorkeys When you go shopping what do you come back with?
Do you come back with "the shopping results"? Or something?

Just 'the shopping' unfortunately.
I just polled my neighbour, apparently Tesco calls it groceries on the website so he thinks it's fine but maybe a bit American. So maybe it's mostly me who thinks it's weird.
Fake edit: why is mobile so broken, I've been trying to submit this for about a minute, the submit/cancel buttons have buggered off!

How do you know what products "the shopping" consists of? Like if someone brings you "the shopping" are they bringing you a candy bar or a car tire? Obtaining both of those items requires shopping, yes?

If I said 'I've brought you the shopping' you'd be getting food/household consumables. The neighbour agrees on this point. If it was something else it would be explicitly mentioned.

Apparently, in-place-upgrading Windows will let this feature start working? I haven't started any apps that use DirectX (to my knowledge) since the reinstall, and beforehand it was as you see in prior post.

It might be a bad localization of originally-US English text. Feet in miles makes much more sense to google for.

@Gąska
Maaaaybe. Except my computer is on EN-US.Also Status: Whatever magic setting telephony providers need to set to make their shit work with a Skype for Business server, they never do it. Even after you e-mail "hey, the test number is getting signalling but no media, I think you might have missed the magic Skype for Business setting like last time", they come back with "nah, man, are you sure your settings are right, here are the configs..."
-
@izzion that's why I prefer telephone customer service. It's harder to dismiss people when you hear their voice and cannot get rid of it until you solve their problem.
