Help me decide between XBOX and PS
-
@timebandit Ok well I still stand by my statement that the amount of competition right now is no more or less than the amount the industry has had during its entire history. Except all those weird poor-selling consoles in the first generation. Or as I like to ass-pull call it the "Coal Age".
-

I didn't mention computers from that era (like C-64) which often were used as gaming console more than computers.
I know that's how I got into computers
-
@timebandit Especially the C-64 specifically, since it had a cartridge slot specifically for gaming and two Atari-compatible joystick ports. And 8 hardware sprites. (But no dedicated scrolling hardware, like the NES.) And quickly had arcade-pixel-perfect ports of Zaxxon and Pac-Man.
-
@blakeyrat I was on the Tandy competitor (CoCo), which also had a cartridge slot on the side
And joystick ports, even a mouse !
-
@blakeyrat said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

If you count low-single-digit-percentage consoles, the 16-32 bit era had some, but I don't think they really count as "competing" in any meaningful sense. Things like the Turbografx-16, Atari Jaguar, 3DO, CD-i, etc.
-
@hungrier Well without getting too far into the weeds, I think we can guarantee the NVidia Ngage was the most popular game console of all time.
Or the Konix Multi-system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EF_dagfTKw

Something that has not been mentioned is that the PS4 (and PS3) does allow upgrading the internal harddrive, unlike the Xbox. So you can throw out the shitty 5400rpm laptop drive that comes with it and replace with with any standard 2.5" harddrive or SSD. Iirc the PS3 can be upgraded to 1TB and the PS4 to 2TB that way without connecting any external storage. And while Microsoft did have 2TB Xbox One models I have not yet seen a 2TB Xbox One X. Either way, for Xbox you're stuck with the internal storage as listed on the box and have to resort to external drives for more storage.
-
@atazhaia but does it speed up things?

Voids the warranty obviously?

I just Googled if you could add an SSD, the answer is yes but it's probably not worth it. 20% improvement in load times from the look of it.
-
@stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Depends on your local laws. To my knowledge, such clauses are illegal both in the EU and in most states in the US.
-
@stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

It's officially sanctioned by Sony, as they provide instructions for how to do so and reinstall the OS, so no it wont void the warranty. Can just go to the official support site and search for the instructions. It's as easy as opening a hatch, pop out old drive and put the new one in and then keep a USB stick with the OS image handy for reinstalling after.

@stillwater @dfdub @djls45 @JBert
I just found something that says it fixes the graphics issues for Splinter Cell. I haven't yet tried it out, but it makes me hopeful!
-
Oh, and -
@atazhaia said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:
Either way, for Xbox you're stuck with the internal storage as listed on the box and have to resort to external drives for more storage.
If you can connect external drive, how does it matter that you can't replace internal one?
-
@djls45 Oh wow, it seems the same fix makes the original game look nice again: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tom_Clancy's_Splinter_Cell#Issues_fixed - note the differences in the screenshots.
-
@gąska Personal preference. It's nicer if I can keep the storage inside the console and not have external drives that must be connected to it. I have to with the Wii U because that's the only way to get large storage for it, sadly.
-
@djls45 @JBert Sweet. IIRC people were going on and on about how there was a glitch in Pandora Tomorrow and thus made the game unplayable. Did not bother digging into it but maybe the glitch had to do with the shadow / lighting issues? If that's the case I might check it out sometime. That's the only game from the series I have not tried out and would love to finish it just for the heck of it.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure splinter cell 1 was okay in a wide variety of hardware. I've played it in all imaginable hardware combinations from 2007 to now. I'm not sure what trouble splinter cell 1 is giving y'all.
-
@stillwater It seems that the games use shadow buffers to calculate where the light and shadows are, and while SC1 has a configuration setting to use shadow buffers, shadow projectors, or shadow projector emulation, SC:PT uses only shadow buffers.
-
Current state of affairs: Got a thrustmaster Ferrari red gaming wheel, works nice on NFS Hot pursuit. Might get Grid 2.
Also got a Logitech F710 that's an absolute joy to use. I instantly lit up when I tried it out after connecting it to steam on PC. Been out of touch with FPS using analog stick for long and now it feels impossible. Gotta give it sometime.
All things said and done, I'm in a happy place for now.
-
@djls45 Interesting how an earlier version has more options and the later one does not.

"Be wary that extending PS4 with extra storage is aesthetically more pleasing than XBOX." Best argument ever.

This is a temporary arrangement. I'm gonna wait for a little while and then get both an Xbox one and a 4K TV.
-
>poor country where everything's expensive as shit

-
@stillwater Really? Wow. I'm like the biggest Xbox fan in this thread and I still would go with a PS4 this generation.
-
@blakeyrat didn't you just argue the other day that XBOX is a better choice?
-
@gąska All I said in favor for it is Forza is a really good driving game.
EDIT: oh and you can buy one cheaper, because Microsoft still sells the 500 GB version, and the only PS4s you can buy now are 1 TB versions.
-
@gąska said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

The only one who seemed to actually recommend an Xbox was @Unperverted-Vixen.

I don't think that's a good argument. I don't know how much @stillwater plays, but I have amassed 2TB of games over the last two years.
-
@dfdub I have 150Mbps internet, so it doesn't really matter if I have 1TB or 100GB - when I want to play something else, I uninstall one game and 15 minutes later have another.
-
@dfdub And me.
-
@dfdub My suggestion was offered with the caveat of "if you don't care about the exclusive titles". (I suppose I should also add "or care about the exclusive features". Xbox One S/X are UHD players, have free cloud saves, and have Xbox/Xbox 360 backwards compatibility. PS4... has PSVR? And a speaker in the controller?) If you do, then the user will have to take that into account.
Assuming that caveat holds, then at @stillwater's prices I don't think the base PS4's mildly better graphics offer enough value over the base Xbox One S to be worth the jump in price.
At US prices, I'd go the other way and recommend the PS4 between the base consoles.
If you're looking to jump to the higher tier of consoles for better graphics, then again, if exclusives aren't a factor, I'd recommend the Xbox One X over the PS4 Pro. (There is a historical window of games with PS4 Pro enhancements but not Xbox One X enhancements, but going forward it's definitely the prettier choice.)
I got both PS4 and Xbox One at launch, and have PS4 Pro and Xbox One X now, so I'm not just being a fanperson here.

I have a friend who has 4 - 5 games installed at once, finishes them and then uninstalls all of them but on and installs games again. Some version of Final Fantasy was the game that was on the PS permanently. I think I'll get a 1 TB Console and go down the same route as said friend and I should be golden.

gonna get 4K TVSusprisingly, Decent 4K TV's are not that expensive around here. I'm gonna get a TV anyway might as well spend some more and get a 4K. Makes sense to me.
@blakeyrat said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

There are a few minor details that IMO give Xbox an edge over the PS4.
-
Gran Turismo / Forza - I tried out both Forza and Gran Turismo over the last few days and even though both are racing sims, Gran Turismo feels more serious than Forza. GT feels like it was made for someone who wants to really improve their driving around a racing track where Forza feels ummm.. more casual. Both look and feel brilliant but I'd go with Forza because it feels more casual. Like I said, there would be Kids and all sorts of people playing this and I'd rather not subject them to a serious racing sim. Also since there's no backward compatibility I can only play GT sport on PS4, but I can play older Forza titles on the Xbox One. More choices the better.

The nagging feeling that Sony hardware might fail on me. I've heard you all say the PS4 does not have any problems, but I don't want the back of my mind always thinking about when it is going to fail. Every Sony hardware that I've had in my life for the past 20 years, none of them have aged well and every single one of them had major problems or just died. Also getting a sony product serviced is sooooooooooo painful. You have usually put up with dumbcunt morons who don't understand a thing for days and days before you get something fixed.
-
I don't want Uncharted. I want Gears of War.

Xbox One: $500 (launch version w/Kinect)
PlayStation 4: $400
PlayStation 4 Pro: $400
Xbox One X: $500Yes, I have all the toys. Single income, no kids or significant other.
Initially I used the PS4 more for games (since it was higher specced I got multiplatform games for it), with the Xbox used for exclusives, watching movies, and media streaming. (Movies because it got a remote first; media streaming because it has better app support.)
Starting last fall, when the Xbox One X was about to launch and games were promising support, I shifted my multiplatform purchases over and my playtime has shifted accordingly.

I see a high correlation between the first and the second part. Hmm.

True; a Sony DVD player destroyed my Aliens DVDs once and I've never forgiven them.
-
@blakeyrat I once had a TV that had the picture slightly tilted by a few degrees. Not even remotely kidding.

Huh? With VHS tape it could have been any brand doing it but how did it mess up optical media? Was it one of those models where you push in the disc rather than putting it down in a tray?
EDIT: I believe you, but I'm just wondering how they could have gotten the basics wrong.

Don't forget that Microsoft doesn't have a particularly great track record when it comes to their console hardware either.

I have had trouble with every single piece of Sony hardware I own except my PS4. I know that's anecdotal, but the PS4 seems to be significantly better than other Sony products.
-
@dfdub Maybe Sony in general has gotten better recently? Asides from a Walkman twenty years ago, I’ve only recently bought my first non-PlayStation hardware from them (new TV, audio receiver, and UHD player about two years ago) but I’ve been happy with them so far.
-
@unperverted-vixen My TV and my headphones (both bought in the last 2 years) still have some annoying software/firmware problems, so I'm not convinced.
-
@jbert said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

It was a 5-disc changer without a large turntable. (I'm not sure how it worked internally-- probably it stacked the disks like an old juke box.) Literally the first week I owned it it got all jammed out and by the time I was able to get my DVDs out they were all scratched to shit. Fortunately I was able to return it, but it was a fucking piece of shit.
Bought a Panasonic one that never had any problems, and the only reason I'm not still using it is because I don't watch DVDs at all now.
-
FInally after much deliberation. I am getting an Xbox one S 1 TB (for half the price of an Xbox one here) with a three month Game pass or whatever the fuck it's called. Should be here in a few days. I just saw the catalogue of backward compatible games and the selection is just too attractive to pass up on. Having said that, I'll probably be trying to get dad and mom to play with me, spend some family time together.
A bit of history. Mom, Dad and I used to play those NES games back in the late 90s every day for ~2 hours. Pretty much all the standard issue NES stuff (Contra, Mario, Tetris etc.,). They have not touched a game console in years except mom plays NFS with a gaming wheel on the PC sometimes.
I don't want to go head first into FPS. I think the learning curve would be a bit steep for them and would make them lose interest. I'm thinking of sidescrollers and other less demanding first person style games. Nothing too complicated but interesting enough for them to lose track of time. Any recommendation is welcome.
Also I am excited AF about the Xbox. Jesus F Christ!

@sockpuppet7 I've recently spotted a 55" 4K Phillips TV for $400 at Walmart. They're really getting cheap.

@sockpuppet7 said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

The price is dropping fairly fast now as they get the production processes for the screen perfected. (The rest of the support electronics isn't much more complex than for a standard HD TV; just a matter of churning out the right chips by the million.)
