Explainging VPNs and Remote Desktops to Non-Technical People
-
ARRRRRRRRGHHHHHHH
-
@captain That includes "Explaining anything vaguely computer related to non-technical people"
-
Helping people with Team Viewer for the first time is fun. It's good to have them on the phone at the same time to hear their screams (of horror or amazement, hard to predict which will occur).

For bonus points, tell them you're calling from Microsoft because they've downloaded a virus. In a thick Indian accent

First thing I usually do is open paint and draw "I CAN SEE YOU" in blood red.
-
The Nope thread is
-
@captain Eeeeeasy.
"You know how sports works? You can go see the game in person, or you can watch it at home on your TV. Regular computer use is like if you're going there in person. Remote Desktop would be like being at home on your TV in regards to using a company computer; VPN is like being at home on your TV in regards to using the company internet. Not as entertaining, or rather, fast, as the real thing, but accessible from the comfort of your couch, or wherever else you happen to find yourself."
-
I had someone tell me that they couldn't just email me the pdf (that they had right there open in Acrobat in front of me in person) because "we're not that advanced here. We can only print it, or if [the tech person] was here they could make photocopies."
Yeah. Oh, and they had internet access, since I watched him get on the internet to look at something.
-
@pie_flavor They have to be interested. They just want "it" fixed (even though it's 4 kinds of human error).

My first step is + U, which typically opens Narrator by default. Then while they get increasingly frustrated at the voice that keeps saying nonsensical things.

"How do I use my computer to watch TV?" Whoops, you already lost them.
-
@heterodox If your users confuse your analogy with a description, you're explaining it wrong. I don't know, maybe I just have a knack for it.
-
@pie_flavor Maybe you just have met enough lusers yet.
-
@boomzilla I did Minecraft support for a while. If you think nontechnical adults are bad wait until you try nontechnical twelve-year-olds.
-
@pie_flavor The nontechnical 60 year old has had a lot more practice at being obtuse.
-
@boomzilla Having dealt with both, I can tell you the kids were much worse.

Having recently transitioned my father from flip phone to an Android phone I am going to call you a damned liar.
-
@polygeekery Individual adults can be more belligerent, but kids' average intelligence is much lower.
-
-
@pie_flavor I'm not sure which was the best part: "laptops can't have clickers!!" or "the computer repair guy tore off the left half of my trackpad and a bunch of keycaps but he said it would still work fine".
-
@scarlet_manuka I'm rather partial to the confusion at the end regarding the mouse.
-
@scarlet_manuka He was one of our more special cases, but it was just a never-ending deluge of absolute morons. A more representative sample would be the about five people a day who were utterly convinced that they could fool us into believing they hadn't installed piracy software.
-
@rhywden It wasn't just at the end.
