I've read a book about every two weeks...
Edit: It's also not hard to doctor the results and cull anyone who actually said anything.

No, I am pretty sure there must have been people who named books ofcourse those were edited out. My problem is it seems like you have to go pretty fucking out of your way to NOT run into a book once in a while. How is this even possible? Now if it was people who were struggling to make ends meet or really really really poor or in extreme disadvantage, then I understand. But this, MINDBLOWN!
-
@stillwater If you say something reasonable, they will edit you out. Therefore, if you want to get on TV, you have to say something stupid. Some people will do just that.
-
@dcoder One of them did it for long enough he became president.

I don't think I've read any fiction books for xy years.
Last time I did, it was just mostly a "so bad is good" thing, which I like to think I grew out of.
I haven't been given a good reason (+ the required stipend) to read another book since. What do I win?

Used to do that too, but lately it's been more irregular. I still bring 2+ books for a week's vacation, and usually get through them, though (mountains + hiking + a book = awesome).
Still, I couldn't have told you the name of the last book I've read without looking it up. Even the next one on my to-read list, I would have to think about for a while before remembering the name. (I probably could have told you the name of a book, but my first choice wouldn't have been one that I've read recently.)

I think it's partly a case of a too open ended question. Most people's brains just don't work like that most of the time. You need a better hook to think of stuff like that.
-
@stillwater Oh there's a second thread on this.
Look the key to sequences like this is they film 400 people and only pick the funniest 10. It a "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" strategy.
You can edit together a sequence like this for LITERALLY ANY QUESTION, you just have to ask it enough times to enough different people.

Yeah that too.
BTW if a TV show does a survey and they come on the news later and say something like, "35% of people surveyed said Idaho is on the moon!" that's usually because a percentage of people answer gibberish to surveys that don't matter. It doesn't mean 35% of the population is too stupid to know what planet Idaho is on. (But journalists are stupid enough to think people never ever lie on surveys.)

I just read the third Song of Shattered Sands book, which I can't remember the name of... the first one was called Twelve Kings in Sharakhai, though. This one may have been called Veil of Spears? Then I read Warcross, and now I'm reading another one of the Witcher books, which I haven't paid close attention to the names of, other than the first one, which was Blood of Elves.
I'll freely admit to reading significantly more than most people, though.
-
@magus I think you're in the wrong thread.

It's not as difficult as you think. Stay out of bookstores and coffee shops. Grocery stores have them, but they are usually all in the same aisle, and you'd be in the junk food aisle anyway. Select friends who don't read books either, which is apparently really easy.

Weapons of Math Destruction by Kathy O'Neil.
Filed under: No, I don't hqv anything to add, just think this book is awesome. Go read it.

Rescue At Waverly, by TJ Mott.

I read a lot. Mostly non-fiction. I read about historical events, about new technologies, about quantum science, about geological discoveries, about society and sociology, about programming, and many other things. I spend most of my free time reading. It's just that I read it on the internet, not in books. According to people making those reading stats, I'm no better than a junkie who dropped out of grade school and hasn't picked up any written text ever since.

It really doesn't matter if people read books. The whole "OMG 30% of population didn't read a book last year" is ridiculous.
My last one was Psychological Assessment of Ted Bundy.
