I can haz "disable desktop notifications forever everywhere" button in profile settings, pretty please?
-
Since in private mode cookies don't get stored outside session, every time I visit this forum at work, I get this notification about notifications that never dismisses itself and I have to click the tiny close button manually, being extra careful not to click the immediate surroundings of the close button since it would enable desktop notifications which I hate. Extremely annoying. And for some reason, I get it multiple times in a single visit.
-
i didn't realize that bug was still there. i got fecking tired of seeing it so i just enabled desktop notifications (because the forum wanted that) and then told chrome to block the notifications.
-
@gąska would it be possible for you to install a userscript?
-
@anotherusername last time I tried to install userscript, I wasted 4 hours and still couldn't get it to work. A custom CSS might work though, if it's possible to make one.

Except it won't work in my case because I'm using private mode.

doesn't provate mode respect site settings set in non private mode?
-
@perverted_vixen private mode doesn't let NodeBB save the information that I enabled desktop notifications. Unless enabling is profile-wide action, unlike disabling which is machine-local?

right, but if you block the notifications in your browser settings, then you can just tap the box and it will try to send notifications that will be blocked. now you never see them nor do you have to worry about hitting the right pixel to disable them. you just tab the box and it goes away
isn't perfect solution, but is pretty good.
-
@perverted_vixen it's like 1% of a solution, because 99% of my problem is that THERE IS A NOTIFICATION AT ALL.

/shrug sorry then, i was only trying to help.
best of luck to you in your search for a solution! :waves:

Just found one. It's obvious in hindsight. Just block it with adblocker. I didn't think of it immediately because I wasn't sure if it has unique class different from other notifications.
It still pisses me off to no end, but at least only once per browser installation.
-
@gąska What about browsing normally instead of private mode?
-
@hungrier I don't want this site to appear in my search history.
-
@gąska Make a separate profile / user in your browser (not sure what you're using) and browse here using that?

I wasn't sure either, but if that's the case, then you definitely could use CSS to do the same thing. That's all the adblocker does under the hood. What's the adblock rule you ended up using?
-
@anotherusername I just blocked the element.

why's that?

@bb36e Christ. Why is it so goddamn hard to make a functional piece of forum software? Discourse, of course, does nothing like this.

I don't think this is true. somethingawful works just fine, but modern forum stuff seems to be so complex and fragile that it breaks if you think about sneezing at it
-
@pie_flavor
Yes, Discourse has never ever had this problem. https://meta.discourse.org/t/suppress-updating-of-url-during-topic-navigation/16428
-
@izzion I don't care whether it happened in 2014. I'm using it now.

@pie_flavor
And it only got fixed because we bitched about it

@pie_flavor NodeBB ≠ Discourse
I'm sure NodeBB is accepting PRs. Go fix it. :)

In conclusion: Discourse is functionally better than NodeBB.

No, I'm pretty sure Discourse makes Discourse buggy.
Also, Discourse buggy:
Yeah, the 'shopping is crappy. There's a limit to how much work I'm willing to put into a lame joke.

@pie_flavor does it still harass you for posting too much?
-
@gąska It does, but you can disable it.

No, they just adjusted the hash IIRC...
-
@pie_flavor at least tell me they still can't handle 100k likes in a single topic.

@gąska There was already a Lorne thread about this exact thing. I know, threads are free...
I have the exact same problem with private browsing.@anotherusername said in I can haz "disable desktop notifications forever everywhere" button in profile settings, pretty please?:

I asked for a custom CSS in said thread (since you guys know how to do that and I don't). That would definitely be a nice solution as it
- doesn't need NodeBB devs to implement something only a tiny fraction of users need, while not having it still seriously annoys me
- works automatically across browsers without installing greasemonkey.
So, if you could tell me the probably 3 lines I need to paste in my custom CSS entry, I'd be grateful. :D

@topspin something like this:
#alert_button_desktop_notifications { display: none }
Just fix the syntax errors (I don't know CSS so it's impossible I've got it right).

@gąska Well, that's what I assume it'd look like but

Assuming that that's the actual id of the element (I don't have it around to look at), then yes. That should work. Only syntax error is a missing
;
at the end of the property, but with only one property it shouldn't matter.

-
@gąska Okay, yes, I've checked and
#alert_button_desktop_notifications
matches the ID that the notification uses. That should hide them. As @Benjamin-Hall said, there's a missing;
after the style, but it'll parse correctly without it since there's just one style in the rule.

Yeah, it seems dumb but ultimately who cares? Ain't nobody got time for that.

A friend posted this on facebook:
I have been on thousands of conference calls over the past 19 or so years of my professional life.
Today, I experienced a first.
While taking roll on a purely internal (and sensitive) call, we were surprised to hear a woman from United Airlines on the call. She was calling from United Airlines Lost and Found.
She had in her possession an iPad that had been left on a United flight -- and kept popping up a notification for our call with all of the vital information for dialing into the call.
So, she dialed in to try to find the iPad's owner...which we did for her, as it turned out to belong to an executive in our organization, participating in the call, who had left his iPad on the plane.
So...all you technology lovers -- think twice about how you configure your notifications!
