Child abuse imagery found within bitcoin's blockchain
-
Researchers from the RWTH Aachen University, Germany found that around 1,600 files were currently stored in bitcoin’s blockchain. Of the files least eight were of sexual content, including one thought to be an image of child abuse and two that contain 274 links to child abuse content, 142 of which link to dark web services.

People are thinking of the children. That's the problem.

I wonder what sort of descent BTC prices are going to take from this? Black Diamond or vertical cliff?
-
Not to denigrate the feeling behind the issue, but...
@bb36e quoted in Child abuse imagery found within bitcoin's blockchain:

"At least" 8 files had sexual content [so few? - ed.]. Of those 8, one of might be of child abuse - they don't appear to be sure.
2 files had (an unspecified number of) URLs in them. Of those 274 were to "child abuse content" and (different?) 147 were Tor links.
I think the person who wrote the headline might have been partaking of some hyperbole.
And whoever wrote the article could probably write a "public health" screed for the UK, given the number of weasel words in it.

@pjh context from the cited paper:
Bitcoin’s blockchain contains at least eight files with sexual content. While five files only show, describe, or link to mildly pornographic content, we consider the remaining three instances objectionable for almost all jurisdictions: Two of them are backups of link lists to child pornography, containing 274 links to websites, 142 of which refer to Tor hidden services. The remaining instance is an image depicting mild nudity of a young woman. In an online forum this image is claimed to show child pornography, albeit this claim cannot be verified (due to ethical concerns we refrain from providing a citation). Notably, two of the explicit images were only detected by our suspicious transaction detector, i.e., they were not inserted via known services.

@bb36e You can replace every instance of "the Blockchain" with "the Internet" or "a bulletin board in their office" and it's exactly as meaningful of a finding.
-
@ben_lubar Everyone who routes internet packets doesn't keep an entire copy of the internet downloaded, though.
-
@ben_lubar a bulletin board and websites can be modified

@dcoder Apparently someone also managed to set off Microsoft Security Essentials by embedding data which duped MSE into detecting it as a decades-old virus:
Just let MSE quarantine the thing and you'll have no more blockchain worries.

Wouldn't it invalidates the checksum and cause you lose your coin?
Or... you mean to let MSE quarantine the whole tool you use in e-currency trading?

@bb36e TBH the real reason why it been cracked down upon is because of copyrighted works. They are just now throwing child porn in there because most people don't care if a few movies are pirated.
I've actually be trying to make an Ethereum app based on this, but getting the whole environment running is half the problem.

@gąska It's in the metadata, maybe one can zerofill the metadata and still be able to use his local copy.
