Status: Roommates are fucking around with the Roku and discovered the screensaver feature. I thought a couple of them would prove interesting to you.
First, there's a black screensaver. Like, complete blackness. You're basically doing the exact same damn thing as shutting off your goddamn TV at that point.
Second, there's a white screensaver. Which costs $1.99.

It would really be best to stick to a commercial product.
I'm not sure there is anything outside a chemical weapon that is that fast. Even a massive dose of Sodium Cyanide (200 milligrams, where 4 milligrams is the LD50 for an average 700g rat) will take up to 30 mins to kill.
Electrocuting them would be near instant. Microwave oven transformer, timer relay, some sort of switch and electrodes under/by the bait. Timer relay is to avoid extended rat BBQ. N.b. this will easily kill humans too.
Edit: Couple of 100w lightbulbs in parallel as primary ballast as well.

I used to use one of those back in Windows 3.1 (or maybe Win95; it's been a long time). But I configured it to also switch the monitor “off” (well into standby) after about 30 seconds. And then that became a common feature of a lot of screensavers…

Most of them are the kind that shred up their insides and they bleed to death.

I can clean that up, so long as it doesn't crawl back into the walls. That's the idea behind fast acting.

It'll almost certainly climb into the walls and die.

Look, I may be a sociopathic murderer and transhooker killer, but harming small animals is, like, a bad thing.
(Mainly because it's one of the "classic signs" to look out for, and I don't need to draw any attention, thank you)

No, this has escalated far too long. At first the goal was benign killing. Now I'm looking for blood.

Problem: The rat doesn't go outside and doesn't chew the bucket. He has looked at it though, but not been curious enough to get to the top of it.

Built a browser add-on with some custom changes, doing so exemplified the problems with the Node.js ecosystem in a nutshell.
Cloned the source from Git: 2.2 MB.
Made my changes.
Ran peru sync, yarn, yarn build:ext.
Resulting directory: 2.2 GB.All to build a 1.62 MB add-on.

Don't. Seriously, just find a way to make it work. There are like five hundred different features spread throughout the service that they require Steam Guard auth to make it work (and that you didn't know required it because they don't tell you until you can't), for raisins. And that'll last for IIRC two weeks even after turning it back on.

This is effectively a service account. It has one job: upload the latest build to the steam depot.
It was working just fine with steam guard before, but as recently as yesterday it has broken for no apparent reason.
Since this is a batch process there's currently no way to have it wait for a particular email, parse it, and suck in a code while steamcmd is running (and the things required to make it so are beyond reasonable scope).
Therefore the easiest solution is to disable Steam Guard, which would resolve the problem without introducing any new ones.

If so, I'd suggest deleting SteamCMD's auth file and logging in manually. It should work fine indefinitely after that as long as you don't change the account's password or something like that.

I did. Several times. When interactive, works fine. I get the "Check your email and give us the code" prompt and do so. Says everything's good. I exit the steam client. I enter the steam client. "Oh, your computer is unauthorized. Check your email and give us the code!" I do. Repeat ad nauseam.

Most of them are the kind that shred up their insides and they bleed to death.
Not quite. Basically, most modern rat poisons are akin to warfarin - they knock out coagulation which makes them bleed to death.
But, and here's the important part: They all have massively delayed effects. You actually do not want fast-acting stuff.
Because rats are smart and learn from the death of their kin. You need a big enough time span between "has eaten something" and "keeled over dead" to avoid having them draw the obvious conclusion.

@rhywden said in The Official Status Thread:

Good point, normally. But this is one rat. If he dies, there will be no other rat to learn from.

genuinely - am intrigued because that sounds really unlikely. Rats breed fast so evolve their way around control measures by natural selection, but I wasn't aware that their deductive reasoning was up to the level that you suggest.

Some rodenticides are lethal after one exposure while others require more than one. Rodents are disinclined to gorge on an unknown food (perhaps reflecting an adaptation to their inability to vomit), preferring to sample, wait and observe whether it makes them or other rats sick.[1][2] This phenomenon of bait shyness or poison shyness is the rationale for poisons that kill only after multiple doses.

My brilliant plan to get to the airport at 1am, drop my bag and go sleep in a quiet corner of the terminal until 6am departure was thwarted
Bag drop and TSA are closed. There is sweet FA for furniture in the unsecured part of the airport.

Also I forgot headphones.

@weng said in The Official Status Thread:
Bag drop and TSA are closed.
There may be some airports that operate around the clock, but some definitely do not. For my trip to Tundraland last year, I was in line, waiting, before TSA opened (just a few minutes, though). My most recent trip, I had to check in at the Air Tundraland ticket counter and check my bag, so I didn't get to TSA until they were already open.

Sounds more brillant to me.

@hardwaregeek this is flipping JFK!
And once I finally got into the terminal (let me tell you how fun the ever changing vagaries of how the TSA wants you to disassemble yourself and your carryon are at 3am with no sleep) it turns out nobody sells fucking coffee until 5!
I bought an energy drink out of a vending machine.
New plan: Sleep on plane. Considering first class upgrade to facilitate that, but AFAIK I'm already by myself in an exit row.
