Windows Notepad Bug Has Reached Legal Drinking Age

The Real WTF is using Microsoft's Notepad when there are infinitely superior alternatives out there, like Notepad++, that actually DO know how to properly display line numbers. (and a million other features useful for editing text documents of any kind)

The only WTF-ery in Notepad is Weenix Lunies who think it's anything other than what it is.  It's not a general-purpose programmers (or any other kind of) editor, it's meant for quickly double-clicking on text files and making small changes.  If you want to use vi (and may the lord have mercy on your soul) there are versions of it available for Windows.

Sheesh, next thing is we'll have people flaming Calc because it doesn't have a built-in scripting language.

You guys didn't read anything the OP wrote in this thread, did ya?
He can't install anything on the systems and is bound to vanilla Windows XP.

My suggestion would be to use Wordpad though. It's actually quite good for editing text files on a bare bones windows install, I greatly prefer it over Notepad, especially when editing files with unix newlines in them.

That said, you could possibly alleviate your headaches using portable versions of the aforementioned tools on a thumb drive (assuming that you're not locked out of running apps in such a manner). No need to install on each and every machine...

Portable Notepad++ can be found here. I've used portableapps.org extensively to add useful functionality to my wife's locked down XP laptop.

TRWTF of course is treating notepad.exe in Windows XP as if it was intended to be a all-round text editor. As someone else already pointed out it started as a mere demo on how to add functionality around a textbox. Even Internet Explorer started out as a mere demo of a browser control wrapped in an executable. Only after noticing that people actually used it, Microsoft started to extend its functionality. I doubt that notepad.exe will go the same route as there are plenty of powerful alternatives around.

No, I did read everything. You obviously missed the post where the OP says that the machines he uses often don't have (functioning) USB.

It's funny that after 50 posts people still make these kinds of suggestions, even when the OP has posted rants here that people don't read his posts and give suggestions that do not take into account the limitations he describes.

     Do like your avatar though.

The OP has a history of posting the most insane things. I simply do not believe he has absoluty no means of putting a portable version of Notepad++ on his machines. I can imagine he doesn't have USB. But if he hasn't got any means of putting something on the filesystem, then how does he get any work done? How did he get Windows XP installed in the first place?

    <meme>Maybe it's a common problem on embedded systems that don't have a filesystem</meme>

I think I started playing Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards when I was 14. Space Quest ][ quickly followed. I considered Roger Wilco for my Avatar but Larry was my first Sierra adventure character. The main character from Police Quest (Sonny Bonds?) was also an option

Honestly, a strict policy regarding portable media not uncommon in large organisations.

  • There's a difference between "can't install" and "won't install", and the OP makes it clear that this case is "won't install".

I have tried to explain this at this site before, and I get zero sympathy. "Oh, you knuckle-dragging fool; just install TardWorks 9.0 and all your problems will be solved." But that's not practical... I've already got a long list of things I have to do to each fresh system I deal with (e.g. disabling font-smudging, GUI animation, "simple" file sharing, and file-extension hiding). I can't install TardWorks 9.0, or IE8, or Firefox, or Notepad++ on every one of these systems, at least not consistently.

It's not that big a deal to just add Notepad++ where required is it?  Surely it's more important to have a functioning text editor than it is to have GUIs that don't animate?  Or am I missing something really really obvious here?  C'mon OP, enlighten me!  Or are you happier to waste energy complaining about something instead of, y'know, like, doing something about it?

You are missing the fact that this is an ambivalent sentence:

    @mfah said:

I can't install [progs] on every one of these systems, at least not consistently.

And one cannot be sure it's can't or won't without clarification from the sentence's author.

Yes, bridget99 is a lazy troll.

He/she claims to live in New Orleans.  And, of course, it's everybody elses' fault that he/she chooses to live in a crime-infested, puke-splattered, below-sea-level shithole that has a tendency to flood horrifically every couple of decades.  So, yeah, I think that answers your question.
