Hotmail has been something to avoid even from before it was bought by MS. Besides I see no point in complaining about something that's free to begin with (Hotmail still is, isn't it? I don't use it).

No, I don't use Gmail or any of the other free services either. I pay a couple of bucks a month so have an e-mail address that is just that, it has all the needed features, like webmail, pop, imap, and none of the crap. Services like that have been around since at least the mid-nineties, although what I use is slightly newer. No adds, no giving BigCorp all your details and info, no dependence on your ISP, and you get to keep the same address no matter what you do. I can even generate throw-away addresses or specific ones for certain purposes, I can have up to 10 linked to my account. To me that's the only sensible way do do e-mail, unless you host everything yourself.
