  • @boomzilla Well you need to pay extra to hire the master Swiss watch maker to look over your gears. Which is apparently a thing this company did. Even though they're making deadbolts and not watches.

  • @blakeyrat But without fancy gears and the nod of approval from a Swiss watchmaker, how could they possibly move a piece of metal half an inch in one direction and back?

Somehow this company that makes $700 deadbolts failed:

    HOW!

Considering how much people spend on other useless Internet of Shit stuff, like $30 light bulbs that won't work anymore in 3 years, I don't think the price tag is that exceptionally high. You don't really want to be too cheap on good doors and windows.

But then, what I've just said comes with the big caveat that I didn't really understand what their product does. He goes on and on... and on ("8 min read") with his salesman-speak how great everything they did is:

the software team challenged themselves to complete the full user experience so that our customers would fall in love with the way they engaged the product and actually experience joy as they used it.

What's so special about it, what the heck does it do? This is a complete fluff piece without any useful information whatsoever.

And nobody will ever experience joy by opening a door, no matter how well designed it is. In the very best case, you won't even think about it.

  • Considered Harmful

@topspin But, with the proper personality in the AI, the door can enjoy being opened, and some of that might rub off on the opener.

  • @topspin said in WTF Bites:

From what little he says about it, it seems to be a high-quality deadbolt that can be operated digitally, by which I infer that it's an Internet of Things device that can be locked or unlocked remotely via a smartphone. If it's not IoT, then it's just a deadbolt with a motor to open or close the lock and a fancy way to interact with it instead of a (regular) mechanical key or knob.

Bonus ducks: The reason I was searching for it in the first place was because it's barely fucking findable. Amazingly enough, the menu segment labeled Transcript does literally nothing, the graduation progress report shows whether you've completed the classes but not what grade you got in them, and nothing grade-related is visible on the main screen. After an incredible deluge of complaints, IT released instructions on how to find your grades, stating that you had to navigate the menu tree in a particular way. None of the menu navigation steps they cited, however, actually exist. 👏

Both officers had weapons drawn — Lindsey had a Taser and Barnes a gun. Sanchez came off the porch and was walking toward Barnes.

"The witnesses also were yelling that this person, Mr. Sanchez, was deaf and could not hear. The officers didn't know this at the time," Mathews said.

Both officers fired their weapons at the same time when Sanchez was about 15 feet away from them; more than one shot was fired, the police captain said.

I agree that it's dumb to be "in public" and also have noise cancelling headphones which make you totally unaware of everything around you, but also: there's a lot of reasons a person might not be able to hear/understand the instructions of a police office. Maybe they don't speak that language. Maybe they're literally deaf. Etc.

There's a link in that reply thread to a Youtube video from CNN which shows a guy being shot and killed in pretty much the same situation. Namely being unarmed and wearing headphones.

It's pretty disturbing so I won't link to it (short code is 0mezvCg0A5c ) but it's basically five(5) seconds from first shout to first shot.

That's an incredibly short timeframe. Especially if you consider that the victim initially had his back to the officer.

  • @rhywden Unless you have eyes in the back of your head, it's pretty easy to have your eyes open and still be in someone's way without noticing. That's why we as a society have decided the solution to that problem is to say something like, "excuse me, could I reach that shelf?" or similar.

If you're unprepared for the polite society solution to this problem, you're being a jerk. That's as simple as it gets.

I don't get indignant at people being jerks. If I did, I'd be indignant like 12 hours a day and that gets tiring. The world's full of jerks. You just have to deal with it.

But that doesn't mean you should be the jerk, just because you're surrounded by other jerks.

That sounds like something that might have found a market somewhere for controlled access doors for a company or government or whatever but is so obviously ludicrous as a home product that I can't even.

Those already exist, although they usually require a server in a room somewhere to function. Once the server's set up, I'm guessing they cost way less than $700/door for hardware, although I've never set one up myself.

We have a setup like that. The employee ID cards are RFID and do the doors on time schedules and ACLs. The master control software runs on a virtual WinXP machine. We paid less than 100 USD for each door controller and each controller does two doors. It actually runs flawlessly in spite of being obviously made by the lowest bidder.

Edit: By lowest bidder I mean that the plastic housing on the controllers is held on by hot-glue and falls off exposing live circuitry. If you go the IP of a controller you also get a PIC18 webserver page that is blatantly straight from the Application Note with almost no changes.
