In the 70's it was compile then link. If a subroutine changed. One only needed to relink. Any oldtimer would know what relink means Junior. In those days "build"  was a word used for something physical. Like a structure and not any mumbo jumbo computer jargonese. So quit it; with these lord it over you words MetaData / MyersData. Maybe at the next CES me and Myers can have it out. He is probably older than Me or dead. So my chances would be good, very good.

The media coverage would be great.

"It seems the brawl broke out when the bearded man made some comment about the word, "metadata" and made some derogatory gesture towards Greeks. Witnesses say, despite the fact Mr. Pederson was the instigator who confronted Mr. Myers, he threw the first punch. Witnesses also noted Pederson then shouted something about the fraudulent plants at the conference, which most believe had something to do with the fake plastic plants they decorated the convention center with, trying to destroy his life's work, which is said to be some kind of desktop search application. We will bring you more details as they surface. Of course, many people are quite confused as to what this fist fight was really about, since they are incredulous that even the most crazy people would not pick a fight over a harmless coined word such as 'metadata'."

lord it over you words MetaData / MyersData

No offence Swampie but words are a part of the language and when a word has a well established meaning such as metadata then this facilitates conversation by allowing concepts to be expressed in a clear and succinct manner without the scope for misunderstanding or confusion.

For someone who claims well established words and phrases are "lord it over you words" you sure have a habit of inventing your own "confuse everyone but mean fuck all words" i.e. MyersData - often you choose words to deliberately mislead. The term MyersData implies that this Myers person owns the data when in fact he just coined a phrase many years ago that is now in common usage due to how aptly describes the concept it is meant to portray.

Another example is the way you use the term "desktop search" to mean something entirely different to the rest of the world. For the rest of the planet "desktop search" is a tool to assist finding files on an individual computer, you use it to describe an almost polar opposite concept i.e. the removal of the concept of files in favour of using one large file and no concept of searching for files.

  • Hunting Aliens before supper with SSDS super search

Just finished downloading 8 video clips that are about 30 seconds long each. I want to check to see if anything unusual is there at super slow speed. The steps are quick and easy.

    1. Download the mpg video from the camcorder to my laptop. Time less than a minute

    2. Auto catalog the mpg files in my search\sony\ folder. Time less than a minute

3 Edit (with notepad)  the output file of the above "gf" operation eg 'spectate1.txt' getting rid of the text that is for other video. and replacing the "photo " with "photo speed=250 " on all 8 lines. Time less than 2 minutes.

4 run SSDS giving it the 'spectate1.txt' file at prompt #1

5 at prompt #2 select "p" option to play 1 video at a time. Not one after the other as with "ww"

6 at prompt #3 the search criteria is entered. enter "photo" (often the default) and because "photo" is on every catalog line.

it is off and showing you the mpg video at about 1/7 speed. Time less than a minute.

So in under 5 minutes from having it downloaded to your computer. You will be hunting for aliens. With the best alien video hunter on the Planet. Me. If you don't find anything right away don't quit. Maybe check out the Tobacco Leaf flyer video at: http://www.archive.org/details/demo85-pict7 Use some fancy video editing software to zoom in on the details. Ulead or other such software. You'll see one very active and playful tobacco leaf flyer. Just 5 minutes to prove the existance of things that move too fast for us to see. Do it Swampies. I know you can.

Yeah and if all 6 Billion of us went around making up new words like Myers and Me. How many words would that be? Nobody would understand anybody else. That's why we have to stomp these new words out from the general vocabulary. Geeks talking to geeks in secret. Then maybe EmmDee would be OK. then again maybe not.

That's why we have to stomp these new words out from the general vocabulary. Geeks talking to geeks in secret. Then maybe EmmDee would be OK. then again maybe not.

Most words in common usage have a reason for existing, often derived from Latin or Greek in the case of English, as these languages have generally been associated with scholars and scientists. The words have become part of common usage because the serve a purpose and can facilitate improved communication, attempting to change established terms will often only lead to confusion and disarray.

The value words have is when use appropriately in the appropriate situation e.g. if I was describing information embedded in an mp3 to my neighbours or parents I would just use a phrase like "you can store useful information in the file such as the artist and title, if you buy mp3s or copy your own cds then this gets filled in automatically" and would see no reason to go into technical details. If I was talking to someone who works in IT I would have no problem using the term meta data as I would expect them to understand the concept as it is a prevalent and well understood term in the IT world. If I was discussing technical implementation of such meta data I would be using terms like "synchronisation", "frame", "TALB", "TYER" etc. There is no question of "lording it" or "talking in secret" in the slightest, merely using the appropriate language for the target audience.

If everyone went around making up words then the natural order of things would generally result in the person inventing them being looked on as a buffoon (similar to you when you make up words like grepplers and so on) and the words not gaining acceptance. If on the other hand the word nicely encompasses and describes a concept, practice or methodology (amongst other things) and therefore is an improvement to the language then it will gain acceptance from it's inherent value.

Languages aren't static or staid in a live culture, words gain or lose acceptance for a number of reasons and this is one of the things that makes using language enjoyable. Sub-cultures develop their own language, your usage of Gee Haw being a prime example of a colloquialism from the farming community, partly to enhance the sub-culture's identity but also to improve communication around topics that only have a meaning (or a greatly emphasised meaning) within said sub-culture.

Personally I work in IT and I use IT terminology when dealing with fellow workers, if I was contracted to work in say the finance sector or for an engineering firm then learning the appropriate language and terminology is part of the job definition; I cannot provide or maintain software to an industry I do not have a reasonable working knowledge of, and failure to understand language as it is used in a particular industry can lead to catastrophic (and costly) misunderstandings.

If geeks are talking in geek terms amongst geeks there is no problem. If the geeks are presenting these terms in a different (but not misleading) way to non-geeks then there is no problem. If geeks are using geek terms to deliberately confuse non-geeks there is a problem and similarly if geeks ability to communicate amongst themselves is handicapped by deliberate constraints applied to their use of language then there is a problem also.

Words are not the problem, usage can cause problems but when speaking to an expert in a field of study (whatever that may be) it is assumed the expert is conversant with the terminology of that field.

You shouldn't play games. Quit when your are out matched. But don't leave. Just change sides and bring SpenkSwampDaddy with you.

How tuff would it be for SSDS to run a background job that did a search and replace "rrr" option in the background creating a rudamentary accounting system. Not very hard at all.

Question: I have been videoing and uploading town council meetings lately (2 a 3rd on monday). With only a minor amount of resistance. The nearest big town has it's own web video streaming. Do your think it would be legal for me to do short (2 Min) reshoots and post those where net users can make comments? Would I go to jail? Would it be a jail like those the politicians go to?

I checked the video I took today and I did spot some really really fast flying birds. Maybe 200 miles per hour. I have videoed lots of birds and these are much faster. What is the speed of sight for a crow sized animal? I might just post it on archive.org temporarily of course.

What on earth does SSDS running in the background have to do with accountancy software? Is this another feature all desktop search tools should provide? I think this is one of the worst arguments you have put forward yet for SSDS and that is saying something.

Nope - control means being able to secure, organise and retrieve data with minimal effort. SSDS requires all info to be in one big file so I have no ability to apply security at a fine grained level, lack of folders makes organising files harder and random means I cannot find the files I want efficiently either.

You are real close on the Super Alien Hunter. for yesterdays video I got it so only the part of the clip where the fast flyers showed. Think about what knowledge you haven't shared first. Except for a couple here; you all have done nothing; but pick apart the code or vocabulary and do nothing else. Question my max size results for the other search engines and not checking yourself. Because you can't or don't know how. Just think where this thread could have gone if some of you did check out those videos for flyers. Doesn't sound like anybody ever tried random random music either. Not a word on most of my recent questions; (pure number search). But guesses we got guesses. It says this in the manual bla bla. F***it I'm posting the fast flyer video from the other day and the text file that plays it. Even if no one tries. That may be just what you need more help...

Yup every screen capture, email-address, video, url, picture, note, ... available to me in an instant through that Swamp search shortcut just sitting there on my desktop / USB thingie. Your way of a thousand programs just isn't simpler than this. Can't be; no way. Reshoots forever.

Maximum size is not a useful metric, speed of results and usability are what people care about and again SSDS sucks in this respect and will not search files as large as you claim anyway.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

Leaves and compression artefacts are not aliens. It would be easier if you edited the videos down to the 3 or 4 seconds of alleged aliens rather than posting 4 minutes of nothing.

Hardly a thousand programs, plus most are directly part of windows and require no effort to use either. Many others integrate directly into windows explorer anyway and require little effort to use.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrsfBiRUr4g

below is the exact text I use to display the above video so it could be examined for more detail. Ie shadow on rock?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The video plays from 2.71 seconds for 2 seconds. at a speed of .125 of 1000 1/8 but in real time probably 1/12 speed.

A few blank lines were added at the end just so that the file name stays in the list for Prompt #1. That's a feature / bug related to an initial read of the first 10 lines of the file checking to see if it is an auto catalog file and thus different defaults. Just make the file longer than 10 lines by adding a few extra.  or check the code and fix it.

Anyway this is just a fresh video and they are always more fun to look at. Shoot some of your own. With a cloud or rockface in the background and see what you get. It doesn't take any effort at all. Just right for me and Lazy forum.

do check out the tobacco leaf flyer in detail. Grab a copy and LOOK

You're saying this is an alien? WTF?! Do you not get outside enough? You even say they are birds, yet somehow you feel this is noteworthy enough for a YouTube upload.

Incorrect. The video plays for 31 seconds... the interesting part (for loose definitions of interesting) is between 2.5 and 4 seconds.

Yes, the very person who says this application is for everybody expects everybody to "check the code and fix it" if it doesn't do what they want it to do. Most user-friendly approach I've seen since Windows ME.

Why do you claim nobody watched this? I've read the thread you made a year or two ago (over the course of two weeks; very entertaining stuff), and it was clear that not only did people watch the video, they critiqued it. Are you blind? Do you need help reading english? What is your problem?

So it's you, too? I thought it was only my when I found him on mine, struggling and half-dead as he was. What did you two do with him? I had him enclosed in some plastic. Gotta love the few bubbles that got conserved along with him, or the horrified look on his face. Really adorable. Maybe I should sell him to a local church as a relic.

Why does the start variable need two = signs but all of the other variables need only one?

Easy. This way you only need Enter Enter Enter to play Super Slow Motion Alien Random Alien Hunter. Maybe even Jerky Jerk BackWards Button if a Swampy adds it. But this is LazyForum, so it won't happen. G** I love SSDS.

  • Why does the start variable need two = signs but all of the other variables need only one?
Because that way is far easier than wds and larger than 2G or something.

Those OTHER so-called desktop search programs don't use. Two equals signs for their start variable which they don't even have. They are for DumDum techies to lord over. They just can't compete. SSDS will whip them.  In a showdown.  My imaginary friends swampies will show how they can use TwoEqualsSigns and the CompeTition will drown. In a chorus of booze.

What's also cool: JS is unchecked for in the homepage URL! Not sure how much XSS is possible though, as it has target="_blank" and escapes <, > and ".

uh oh, guys... I believe his strategy might actually be working. He is concentrating so high amounts of crazy in this thread that it radiates off and slowly but surely turns the other residents intothe swampies he's always talking about. Back off! Back off before. it's TooLate!

  • Look deep into the video - then you'll see

Just look closely at that tobacco leaf flyer video (with SSDS) . Then you'll realize everything ole Swampie was telling you is true. But don't be scared cuz I got these 3 Medicine Stones. meidicine stones 3 of them

    these 3 Medicine Stones.

The last one isn't. A stone. It's actually a movie prop. From that movie with the flying fridge. And the fedora. CrystalSkull or something.

  • So, uh,... what differentiates a medicine stone from a regular stone?

    Dreams.

    Honest.
