Status: Brand new neighbour just appeared on the doorstep as I was trying to put the roast in the oven.
I've heard you are good with technology, we've just bought a new TV and it won't...
IT'S WORKING FINE NOW
Oh, I'm so sorry to trouble youHow the heck did she know I was in tech in the first place and I've burnt my thumb now
Edit: I suspect my other elderly neighbour, who upon first meeting her told me her tits were real.. she's at least 70. Nothing wrong with that but not my thing at all.

How does one respond to that? "Congratulations?"
-
@weng I mean, assuming they look round and such instead of generic elderly sag, it would be an accomplishment.

SpectateSwamp DownloadManager System. Nobody downloads files better than this!
-
Speaking of DSL: I repaired my incoming phone line. Still no connection, though. So I called my ISP and they will send a technician to look at it. Hopefully it's something simple like the short circuit protection in the base station having been triggered. All I could see is that there's no voltage on the incoming line, so I assume the error is outside of my property.

Each time it wants to download a new byte, it opens a new connection to ask for it. Keeps everything nice and fresh, and allows perfect resuming when the physical network link gets interrupted.

Also. It's 2064 and people still believe in the five stages of grief.

@magus or pretty much any game where robots are people too. Or more generally, any game where the developers have strong opinion on some subject and don't bother with making it an option for a player to take an alternative point of view, either because of constrained resources or moral obligation to educate players what they should think.
-
@gąska It'd be interesting to have a game that's really fun and compelling, but the story has the wrong protagonists. For example, you're a high-ranking official under a totalitarian dictator.

Status: Sony Vegas 14 Pro is not taking very kindly to being virtualized...
I have a feeling that if I get it activated the actual program will start up fine, but their quirky activation program (which is insisting on reinstalling c++ runtimes for some reason) is silently crashing...
Oh well, I suppose I'll just actually install it...

@tsaukpaetra isn't Sony Vegas very GPU-heavy?

STATUS: Fiber company called. I am eligible for their cheap install campaign. Although by taking part of the cheap install offer I will also be forced to sign up for 500/500Mbit internet for two years (at ~€50/month). Woe is me... And they also told me I need to get the install sorted asap after the snow has melted and the ground has thawed, because of the numerous countryside fiber projects running this summer it will be hard to get a techie if I wait too long. So many "problems" with this...
Also, rant time!
I hope our campaigning to scrap the highly paid network contractors the C-levels have a corporate deal with pays off. Not only are they completely incompetent, but they're also expensive. They're the idiots who were going to install new firewalls and just dumped the box in the server room and then went back to their office to do the remote configuration, forgetting about the step to, you know, unpack it and install it first. (Their office is about 1000km away btw.)
So, in case we want to make any change to the network, like install an extra switch in one of the labs, we're supposed to call them and pay them to fly up here and do the work. Even if the extent of the configuration is to attach the switch in a rack and connect power and network to it. Even if we're (at least) FOUR people here who can do it in like 5 minutes.
In addition to unauthorized hardware changes, the HPC rules for the network says that all traffic has to go through their over-restrictive firewall. The problem for us is that, obviously, their rules makes us unable to do our work properly. So, we've been installing bypasses to skip their firewall so we can run our own less restrictive firewall for the parts of the network that needs that as well as creating an additional level of private networks for the lab rooms, so we can configure those as we need without involving their equipment.
So I probably was reconnecting the patch cables to the network lab on my own. Proper procedure would have mandated me to call the HPC offices so they could fly someone up here to connect a couple patch cables between the switch and the patch panel.
But yeah, fuck those HPCs. Would be much better if we could get full control to manage our own network ourselves. We got two fully qualified network technicians working here, as well as two others who can do basic stuff. I think we can handle managing the internal network in addition to our other tasks. And it would makes our lives so much easier.

Touch and hold the notification message until an information icon appears. Tap the icon, and you should be able to block notifications from the app.

It's currently waiting for approval to be re-designed since mumble, the only work done on it is maintenance when it explodes. We don't sell product to end-users so the website is more to host our contact details than anything else. The industry we are in is extremely small so we basically deal with the vast majority of the customers that exist already.

Can anyone explain the difference between these two batch files:
The filters look identical (once concatenated) apart from the
[1:a]
at the start offilter_b
, which might be a simple ignorable artefact (I don't comprehend the filter syntax). I don't think I can begin to compare theffmpeg
invocations themselves; they have some similar bits I guess?1:a
means "take the first audio channel of the second (1, zero-indexed) input", which is theaudiotmp
file the previous invocation made.0:V
is "the first video channel of the first input", and0:m:title:[some word]
means "take the channel with this title in its metadata from the first input".Commands with
[foo]
before them takefoo
as input, putting[bar]
after a command saves the output inbar
, and using a comma instead of a semicolon means the output goes directly into the next command. The commands being used are:
- loudnorm - normalize the (in this case, microphone) audio volume levels
- aformat - a hint for the previous command to know what type of audio should be emitted
- asplit - copy an audio stream to multiple identical audio streams
- volume - pretty self-explanatory. it changes the volume of an audio sample by some multiple
- sidechannelcompress - here's where the ducking magic happens
- amerge - combine multiple audio streams into a single stream with multiple channels
- pan - merge the audio channels from an effectively meaningless 4.0 configuration to stereo
Does it work if you omit the volume filter? Seems to me that loudnorm and volume would conflict.
