You claimed that the most close-to-being-useful answer got downvoted into oblivion.
It's at the very bottom of the page. I don't know how their idiot internetpointzzz system works, but where I sit things at the bottom are "down".
Also I didn't use the word "oblivion". I said "to shit". Totally different.
Tomato, tomatoe.
Separate topic fer obvious reasons.

@pjh So since this is a new topic now, what is the subtle difference between "this answer is at the very bottom of the page" and "this answer has been voted down" that I'm somehow missing according to Mason Wheeler?
-
@blakeyrat Umm... people deciding they don't like the answer enough to actually vote it down?
-
@masonwheeler But it is down, so it got there via... magic?

If the power of a shrugged “Meh” is magic…
-
@blakeyrat It got there via people voting other things up and ignoring that one. (Or possibly it was just posted after the other ones had already received a bunch of upvotes, and so they had a head start.)

It's the difference between puppies dying of starvation and dehydration due to neglect vs putting them in a gunny sack and throwing them in the river.
-
@masonwheeler Ok, but it is at the bottom, so...? It's not downvoted, despite being as "down" as is possible to get?

I get that; what I don't get is why down doesn't mean down.

I think the confusion is in the same way orange fruit may not be orange the fruit.
Like, it may be down at the bottom due to votes (or lack thereof), but the down vote count itself may not be reason it's at the bottom.

It does, of course. But your initial statement went a lot farther than that. You implied that it had received a negative response instead of pointing out that it did not receive the positive response that it deserved. You can't say that on a forum full of s and expect to not get called out on it.
Especially if they can make dead puppy jokes.

It's an occupational hazard of working in this field; non-s find programming much more difficult. The dead puppy jokes are a side benefit.

Also note that "down" is confusing on Stack Overflow because it tends to reorder answers with the same score every so often. A single answer could be a the bottom and yet be at the top / middle the next time you load the page if there are a bunch of answers with the same low score.

Answers with the same score are put in random order. That order changes on every refresh.
