On a completely unrelated topic: I've been looking at screens on Amazon and like 2/3rds of them still have VGA connectors. They've been obsolete for almost two decades now, what are they still doing there?
What's next, computers with optical disk drives?

Status: We have a bug. We've had it for more than a month.
I wrote tests to prove we had this bug.
This week, fixing the bug finally got prioritized, but I doubt it will get done in time.
It actually has a second, even worse bug related, which I don't think we should even ship unless we fix, or else our application could get into an unusable state.
Meanwhile someone broke all the users we were using in our automated tests, possibly triggering the second, more disastrous bug, which causes no interactions with their entire section of the app to work.
And on top of that, the thing I mentioned yesterday, where the thing I did only breaks in our team environment.

For the curious, the Crash Utility Monitor (which monitors Crash Reporter And Proactive Respawners) was discovered to not properly hook the AntiDeSpawn functions of the target objects. So, it was convinced nothing was wrong, when (at least) one was constantly breaking....

Wtf? I've never seen sudden aggressiveness like that.My cat does that.
My theory is that they learn that when they're kittens-- before their jaws/claws are strong enough to really hurt at all, people think kittens biting them is cute and encourage the behavior. Then when the cats grow up, bam, suddenly you have a cat who thinks people want to see biting. So there's biting.
Anyway, that's not unusual behavior for cats. It doesn't mean he hates you. Go grab some string and play with him, he's fine.

Of course, it's a cat. So it might. Today. Tomorrow (or in 5 minutes) is different.

Status: The thing that was causing 50% of my earlier frustration turned out to be copy-paste error.
I'm not the one who made it, but it was figured out, fixed, and things are 'working' now.
Except everything is running super slowly, and weird behavior is being reported in places, which I don't think my stuff could be involved with, but it's all super weird.
-
Status: Why don't we have a nerd alt-rock band called Perl Jam?
-
@blakeyrat IIRC an alternative theory is that kittens learn how hard they are allowed to bite via play (play stops if they bite something too hard). Kittens that aren't socialized with other kittens like this don't learn what the threshold is so they just end up actually biting instead of just restricting movement

Your theory and @blakeyrat's both sound reasonable. Puppies do the same thing and supporting both theories, my vet taught my parents that when puppies bite, they're supposed to make a high pitched noise (much like the yip of another puppy) to show they're in pain and pull away instead of punishing.
Of course with cats, it's hard to come up with any sort of general theory because they're all so different. My cat's a rescued feral but has never bitten or scratched me. When you rub his belly, he doesn't curl inwards and try to grasp (as described above), he just stretches out and rolls over. All cats are weird in their own ways.

Office Superhero by making a huge data import 4x faster.
How did I pull off this miracle?
I logged into the Azure portal and turned the database up to 400 DTUs instead of 50. (Azure lets you go higher, but it seems 400 is high enough that the bottleneck is elsewhere).
Someday I gotta go look up what a "DTU" is...
-
@blakeyrat Now if only our imports were faster. 3 minutes for 1000 100~field records...
-
Status: We know that under some circumstances, our entire system becomes hosed for a client. Today, I decided to test it.
But I can't test it effectively, because we've started losing data again. We get around 30% through, max.
But whatever, I figure I may as well keep going, thousand at a time to keep it almost working consistently.
Around 16k records, everything in our entire system died for everyone, even outside the context I know the thing I was doing can break.
I both hope and don't hope that it was me.

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Short answer: Azure's method of throttling your database. It's a mix of IO bits and pieces amounting to "how much data can this database access in the period of 1 minute". Not sure what the unit of measurement actually is though.
-
STATUS: after applying fresh thermal grease and firmly reattaching the heatsink/fan, my CPU is now running much better. No longer thermally throttled, and not pegged at 99 deg C. Still warm, at 55 under light load, but I'll take that (and 3.7 GHz) instead of 99 C and 2.1 GHz.
Now to try it in a game.

All to run one program? No thanks, I don't need to fuck with my work computer that hard just to do the needful.
Speaking of which, apparently my /root/.history file got wiped sometime earlier than two weeks ago, and that had my easy-peasy ffmpeg command to transcode the file in question. :( Sad day.

After many hours of pulling my hair out trying to work it out I discovered that if you make the first letters “ID” of a text file Excel incorrectly assumes you are trying to open an SYLK file (whatever one of those is!).
(Also, a SYLK file is “symbolic link” file.)
The is strong with Excel.

In my home PC, I had that problem. Everything fit… except that the back of some switches on the case stuck out just enough that I couldn't mount the GPU cooler fan on the case correctly (as it was about a quarter inch larger than a standard fan on one side, but had to be that way round to make the pipework reach without kinking). I was really cross until I realised that I could use a spare fan from my old machine as a spacer. A little work with some heavy copper wire to join the bits together securely, and everything works fine. A neat bodge, but definitely a bodge.
