@raceprouk
seems like sonic already tried to give that dildo a blowjob
-
@anonymous234 okay, so it's obviously not really a dildo... what is it?
I have a box grater with a side that looks like that... is it some bizarre-shaped grater? But what on earth could it be used for?
-
@anotherusername possibly grating small things like nutmeg? That's all I can think of. There are a large number of cool looking but useless gadgets out there...
-
@anotherusername I'm pretty sure it's a cheese grater or a nutmeg grater.
But it does look way too phallic to be a coincidence.

Why is that surprising? It's just organic matter that you burn.
It also seems like a good way to get nasty infections if they aren't treated properly.
The fire kills it all off.
I hope.

Exactly. The heat treatment would need to be done before anyone touches them. That makes it harder to do properly. And any tools used should be disinfected frequently as well.

Well, charcoal is usually made by burning stuff in a low oxygen environment, so the nasty stuff is probably killed in that process. And presumably most of the nasty smelling stuff, too. I guess if you have a lot of that and not so much wood for making normal charcoal, it's probably good enough.
But I suspect it has a big hipster effect like artisanal ice, too, from people who don't understand poverty (in the case of charpoop).

Assuming the hygiene issues are surmountable then it's sounds better than some of the suspect tech fixes for third world problems. Better than the Bill Gates' Solar Loo which fits well in the hipster category.

@japonicus That must be the same thing. Your link says they use "solar concentrators" to sterilize them.

If the suppresor melts but the gun stops firing, does it make a sound?
-
-
@boomzilla yeah, it obviously didn't really melt down... it just got hot enough that it was weakened to the point that it could not withstand the extreme pressure inside the gun barrel when firing. Kinda like the structural steel in the World Trade Centers.

@hardwaregeek FWIW, in HS I discovered that orange extract had twice the proof of vanilla. Mixed with orange soda, it was almost palatable, though the pleasing part of the result was not the taste.
-
@tharpa as a child I learned that vanilla extract is alcoholic. Turns out it seriously burns when your brothers pour a tablespoon of it down your throat. Ugh.

Really? Huh. TIL.
Depends. The flavor dissolves well in alcohol, so the extract typically has a fair amount of alcohol in it. The ones that don't have alcohol typically use glycerine and/or polyproylene glycol instead.
-
@luhmann said in βπ THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:

Pack it in, pack it out.
What did you do last weekend? Oh, just hung out...
-
@anotherusername IIRC, the one we had as kids was relatively high proof. Something more than 100. My mom still uses everclear to make herbal extracts. Kinda funny, since we're LDS (Mormon) and so don't drink. She says going to the liquor store is...awkward. Especially since the nearest place that carries it is in Utah, so she has to smuggle it over across the border back into Idaho.

Also the alcohol cooks out really quickly to leave behind the flavor.

A baking tip I've read is that you can let spices soak in alcohol for a little bit before adding them to enhance the flavor. Dunno if it works for all spices and in all forms of baking, though.

That's only because there's very little alcohol there (absolute volume). It is not necessarily true that if you use wine/etc as a base for a sauce that most of the alcohol will evaporate. That takes long cooking time.

Hmm...I didn't realize it stayed in there that long with baking.

Most people think it evaporates off pretty quick. It's one reason I don't cook with alcohol (I'm too cheap to buy real vanilla extract )--I don't drink and it doesn't burn off very fast (and even 5% left is still enough). Makes me have to change a lot of recipes though.

It's especially bad with flambΓ©, as people think all the alcohol gets burnt off, and the resultant dish is alcohol free.
it isn't.
-
@raceprouk I don't understand what's bad about that

Nothing, unless you're carefully watching how close you are to the drink-drive limit ;)

If you pass the drink-drive limit by eating flambΓ©, maybe you hate too many flambΓ©

Or if you don't drink for moral reasons. On that note, you have to watch filled chocolates. The liquor filled ones have enough to get people who don't drink (and so have no tolerance for alcohol) noticably buzzed.
-
@benjamin-hall said in βπ THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:

Like, you don't want to be nasty to the yeast?
-
@jaloopa as I said earlier, I'm LDS and we have moral objections to alcohol consumption. Plus, it all smells nasty to me. Beer smells like rotten bread dough, wine like grapes gone bad, and liquor like a chemical factory. Ugh.
-

@raceprouk yes, and it's all nasty. Only thing worse (for common smells) is burning tobacco.
-

Yeah, but I don't get what's immoral about it. Who does it hurt to drink a mouthful of beer?

I can respect that. I don't really drink much, and I don't have any problem with people choosing not to at all

I may be wrong, but I believe the objection is due to the fact that alcohol affects the brain, and IIRC, the LDS frowns upon mind-altering substances of any kind.
