Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack

non-crippled NFC (not just Tap to Pay, but also Tap to Share, Tap to Unlock, ...),
FYI, that's been in Android since NFC was implemented...
Of course, thinks it's only useful for Tap to Pay because why would you want to use it for anything else?
-
@sloosecannon Yeah, I know. Windows Phone didn't get Tap to Pay until late last year, and only if your carrier
isn't pants-on-head retardedactivated it for your SIM, but it's had the other stuff since Windows Phone 7 "Mango", if not earlier.is probably worried about all the other things people can do with it, and won't rest until the only thing you can receive by NFC is links to Apple-controlled properties, not
dickpicsanything useful.

It's so much better now that they've changed how that works to work on pretty much any phone...

My CPU is all in the company anti-virus, slowly analyzing gcc each time it compiles one of the files in a project.

It's exactly Slack with the world's worst voice comm glommed onto it. Seriously, it sounds like fried ass. I can't imagine anybody actually using it for game communication.

@raceprouk sshhhh, don't confuse the Americans. They still think writing "please pay person some moneyz" on a signed piece of paper is a high tech way to transfer money
Only elderly people do that.
I know because they are inevitably in front of me at the grocery store.

@blakeyrat said in Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack:

Not on my systems. In fact, it sounds miles better than Skype ever did.
-
@erufael It sounds worse than Mumble, and has worse control over the voice capture, but it's free and easier to use.
-
@blakeyrat said in Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack:
@bb36e If it has "IRC" in the name, it's garbage. Don't peddle garbage. Nobody likes garbage.
Edit: I think I tried slack once, and I didn't care for it. irssi is my favorite irc client, and has been for a while.
-
@erufael said in Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack:

I don't get these people who think Skype sounds bad, that could not be more different than my experience.
Discord might sound better if it's "auto-cutoff" or whatever (which is on by default) wasn't complete garbage and didn't cut people off in the middle of sentences all the fucking time. If you go through the effort of turning off that "feature" you can bring it up to "barely acceptable" quality, I suppose.
The codec it uses is still garbage though. But at least people won't get cut-off mid-sentence.
(BTW, if you're curious, listen to any of the videos I've done with Ben L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoEBmyvJDt8 you can easily hear places where Ben L's speech gets cut-off in the middle of statements, because he had Discord on Auto. We only used Discord because Ben L doesn't have Skype on his dumb Chromebook and Google Hangouts was utterly broken at the time.)

I also have Discord on Auto. The difference is, I've tuned it.

Huh. I have a crap connection and voice on Discord sounds better than on your YouTube videos.

You can't tune it if it's on Auto, that's exactly the problem. Unless they've fixed that very recently. EDIT: oh they have changed it. Huh. Well Ben was getting cut-off three weeks ago, so it was broken then.
-
@dreikin said in Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack:

Recently if I've had a guest it'd been over Discord, so that's not saying much. ;)

Talking to people
I disagree sometimes. Often it's easier to get others to perceive emotion through text than it is to puppet said emotions IRL.

That's been around since I started using Discord... Like a year ago...
-
@sloosecannon said in Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack:

What is "that"?
It used to be if you had it set to "Voice Activity" instead of the volume slider to set the sensitivity it would be like "Auto Sensitivity". It could be turned off, but it was on by default, and it's utterly broken.
At some point, it looks like they've removed the utterly broken "feature" so, yeah, now it probably does work better.

I only ever use voice activity activation when a friend and I are playing Rainbow Six Siege, since something with that game causes Discord to freak out and sometimes not register my push-to-talk key. Any other time I've got it bound for push-to-talk to one of the spare buttons on my mouse (which is usually for guild/raid comms in WoW, where spare chatter from voice pickup is definitely not wanted)
-
@e4tmyl33t What bugs me is that Skype has automatic voice activity recognition-- Skype doesn't transmit background noise-- it's just theirs fucking works.
Anyway, it's good that if Discord couldn't get their shit to work, they removed it altogether. Better to have no feature than a feature that cripples your product.

Again, opposite of my experience. It's almost like different setups cause different things....

It's friggin' WebViews all over again.
Which is hilarious, because Discord is also one, and doesn't have performance issues!

That's fair. Although I haven't noticed much of an issue with it. Unless I'm running it in my crappy Windows 10 tablet with 2 gigs of RAM

I once built a webapp that required Clippy, back when ActiveX was still a thing.
Luckily JavaScript has gotten much better throughout the past years, and we now have this:

@dreikin modern chat features with ancient hardware requirements sounds good to me.
-
@e4tmyl33t It's gotten to the point where I have an application installed named X-Mouse Button Control specifically that can block badly behaving programs from intercepting said mouse button.
I've run into far too many apps/games that grab the Mouse 4 button and force it to be treated as Back and don't actually provide a way to disable it. Even games that let you adjust keybindings; Mouse4 and the Esc key are basically the only buttons they don't let you rebind.
