Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack
-
I noticed that my machine has been sluggish and its battery life has become poor. Whilst investigating this, it turns out that Slack desktop fails badly when used with multiple accounts. This is because CPU and memory usage increases linearly as you add more accounts to your Slack desktop client. As a result, I believe the growing trend to use Slack to be part of multiple communities is seriously flawed until Slack resolve this problem.
I know friends who use slack to communicate within their circle, and I feel sorry for them.
IRC definitely shows its age, but something like https://www.irccloud.com/ seems like it'd fit the bill for modern chat servers.
-
@bb36e If it has "IRC" in the name, it's garbage. Don't peddle garbage. Nobody likes garbage.
-
@bb36e His complaint is Slack uses more resources when you ask it to do more stuff? Seems a sensible expectation to me.

If the numbers are tiny, then yes. These numbers aren't tiny.
I wonder if he meant, "no more than 5%."

Yes, basically the same thing.
no more than:
time <= 5%
less than:time < 5%

So not the same thing, I win, you lose and I will be taking the kids with me and you won't be allowed to see them even every other weekend, and if the judge rules otherwise, I will kill them with my own hands and then hang myself in the kitchen and I will tape it for your benefit so that you can see what your actions made me do.

You'll have to get across the lawn first.

This is why I stick to the website which doesn't have this bullshit nearly so badly.

Is web slack as bad?
-
The Slack app is nothing but Chromium, so webslack is also bad. The only difference is that Chrome updates more often, so improvements in the JS engine will land in your browser sooner. The Chromium version of Slack app isn't updated until the Slackdevs feel like it.
Re. IRC: nothing wrong with a good ol' text based protocol and a plethora of apps which can use it (e.g. mIRC). The Slackdevs also realised that and built a bridge:

-
@alexmedia except somehow webslack eats way less resources than appslack.
You might say... when it comes to holding in resources...
It has a Slack Bladder
:yeaaaaaaaah:
-
I wouldn't know, I don't have a use case for Slack.
That doesn't mean that I don't slack off... :D

IME it is pretty sluggish to start and not terribly responsive. My friends mostly use the phone app, so it's even worse for them

Is there anything currently available that's better than IRC? If not, why do you think we've failed to make anything good?

The opposite of the fail phone, of course. Although curiously, some people consider them equivalent.

a really shite laptop crushed into the size of a phone, given a horrible battery life, a redonkulously stripped down version of windows and has a sim card slapped on the side for style points?
at least that's the word on the street.

you also shot the messenger.
do you know what happens when you shoot the messenger?
You get less mail.
then you miss important things
such as bills and rent.
then you start missing teh debt collection letters.
then the marshals show up at your door with a warrant for your arrest and the siezure of your property because you missed your court date too.
so maybe shooting the messenger is a bad plan.

It doesn't bother me, but then that's just me.
What I find odd is how they still haven't got screen-sharing implemented, despite continuing to promise it's coming.

no, the arest is because you r debtors sued you and pressed for criminal fraud charges, which you failed to show up to court to defend yourself against.
there is the assault charge too, but that got thrown out because the judge died of laughing at the description of a NERF gun as an assault weapon and had to be revived with a defibrilator.
-
@accalia said in Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack:

But my bills and rent are paid automatically, without me needing to take action, so there's no need to sue. Plus, I get my bills electronically anyway :P

@raceprouk sshhhh, don't confuse the Americans. They still think writing "please pay person some moneyz" on a signed piece of paper is a high tech way to transfer money

Not high tech, just convenient when it's appropriate, but I can understand the confusion. The word doesn't have enough
u
s to make sense over there.

@boomzilla checks, or cheques as we spell them, are so 20th Century.
-
@arantor Are you guys giving up on the wheel and fire, too?

@boomzilla we're giving up petrol and diesel cars. But we like wheels. And we like fire.

Hi! Windows Phone user here!
a really shite laptop crushed into the size of a phone
Well, it is kind of weak in the RAM department, but being trapped in the size of a phone is optional.
given a horrible battery life
Nope, try 8 hours in use and up to a week in standby, compared to some laptops' 4 hours or a typical craptop's 1.5.
a redonkulously stripped down version of windows
Ehh, that's debatable. I can't run the x86-only apps that are on my PC on my phone, but I can run almost any Metro app, and a few OEMs even offer VMs at a discount, as well as ways to surface apps from the VM as tiles on your phone.
has a sim card slapped on the side for style points?
Eh, the baseband is kinda junk. On a few Qualcomms I've had, too many SMSes in too short a time basically crashes the entire radio system, and anything that tries to interact with it afterward locks up -- including the Start screen. But Android phones with the same chipset have had similar problems.
at least that's the word on the street.
Hmm. Well, you're missing out on non-crippled NFC (not just Tap to Pay, but also Tap to Share, Tap to Unlock, ...), unlocking your phone just by glaring at it, the usual Store + Assistant + Browser triad that other phones have, Office preinstalled and fully licensed, Xbox Live, quiite a few other things. Oh, and VR, if you've got one of the newer ones.
-
@twelvebaud The WinPhone platform has a lot of potential to be truly great. Pity MS hasn't got a fucking clue how to make it successful.

Ah, yes. The 2040 commitment. We're not going along with it and that has nothing to do with the fact we don't have a new government yet, no sirree, why would you say that?
