As we previously announced, the first phase of the rollout targets newer devices.
Including my PC that's a number of years old that I forget exactly, but is definitely more than 3.
"Today, in a post on the Windows blog, John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, recommends that users don’t manually install the Creators Update, but rather wait until it’s automatically offered. But why? Because the update is causing problems for users."
"Microsoft isn’t saying categorically that you shouldn’t manually install the update, but that if you do, you need to be prepared to "work through some issues".
-
@El_Heffe That's the odd thing: I haven't triggered the installation manually, or even asked for the update, but the PC in question is giving me the option anyway. It's already had the pre-CU Privacy Settings update.
And yet, the newer Surface pro 3 has had nothing at all.

Micro-Soft doesn't want to fuck up the user of it's hardware product. They use the competitor's customer as beta-tester.
Then they can claim that their hardware integration is superior. It all makes business sense
-
@TimeBandit Whatever Time-Bandit.
So far, the only issues I had were with graphics drivers, which I had to fully uninstall and reinstall. It's actually been a really smoothe update.
-
@Magus Can confirm, had to do this for a desktop a friend of mine runs.
-
@El_Heffe 4 machines (3 pro, 1 enterprise), all no issues. Except I discovered on the enterprise machine (triggered via install from msdn iso) that the PreferExternalManifest registry key setting was cleared. ([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide]) I'll have to check the pro machines when I get home...
-
Do they mean "don't manually start the upgrade process" or do they mean "don't manually reformat and install from USB"? I've done the latter, but I haven't had to manually start an upgrade because the upgrade was always offered through Windows Update already.
From the quote in the article it sounds like they're saying "wait until we offer it for your hardware configuration"?
-
Hmm…
Headline:
Microsoft recommends you don't install the Windows 10 Creators Update
Second paragraph:
Today, in a post on the Windows blog, John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, says much the same thing, and recommends that users don’t manually install the Creators Update, but rather wait until it’s automatically offered.
Final paragraph:
Microsoft isn’t saying categorically that you shouldn’t manually install the update
Is it just me, or does the article contradict the headline a bit?

Pretty much, yeah. And I'm pretty sure that's the standard advice for all major OS updates.
Edit: From the MS person's blog:
It’s important to note that when customers use the Software Download Site to manually install the Creators Update they bypass many of these blocks. Therefore, we continue to recommend (unless you’re an advanced user who is prepared to work through some issues) that you wait until the Windows 10 Creators Update is automatically offered to you.
So yeah, they're saying 'do the thing we've been telling you all along'.

@RaceProUK Any excuse to release an article saying something might have trouble in the most negative way possible must be taken if you want to keep up your readership of Time---Bandit and friends.

I manually installed it and it broke the Bluetooth connection to the PS4 pad. I'm going to do a fresh install soon and hope it fixes it so I don't have to use a USB cable like some sort of animal.
-
@coldandtired Um… just set up the Bluetooth connection again? An OS reinstall seems a bit overkill.
-
Meanwhile, I haven't ran into any issues (yet) despite running on ancient hardware (first-gen Core i7). Maybe it's making up for all the orange screens of death when doing clean install...
-
I installed it on my work machine today. It seems to be working fine except that when it was finished Office was deactivated and required re-activating.
I Googled this and the first result was some poor sod with the same issue being told that wasn't possible or other people would be seeing the same issue

Random speculation: Office activation is tied to some arcane part of your specific Windows installation, and the update changed that bit?
-
Upgraded my main machine to 1703 this past weekend. I've run into a disappearing fonts bug; over time some fonts disappear from the lists of fonts available in applications. The Fonts folder/Control Panel doesn't show them either, though if you try to reinstall a missing font it tells you it's already installed. A reboot brings them back temporarily.
Monday I wiped my convertible tablet to get rid of the Windows 8 restore partition structure and recover the space involved. The reinstall went smoothly, though Windows 10 was missing a lot of the drivers except for wireless networking. (Backwards from the normal where you have no networking. Also would have expected more of the required drivers to be there since the tablet came from the Windows 8 era.) I haven't tried connecting a Bluetooth device, but I did read (before this thread) about the Broadcom chipset issues.
Sadly, all the normal annoyances seem to remain: applications you can't uninstall, features you don't want to use but can't disable, and even more ads in the OS! Joy!
-
Hmm. Anybody aware if the Crater Pupdate has the same issues as the previous major update (anniversary thingy)? I.e., it would abort the update on reboot if your initial boot device was a HD different from the one on which Windows was installed and the boot device used a non-Windows bootloader.
I'd rather skip the part where Windows re-downloads the update a few dozen times and attempts to install it as many times, each time conveniently interrupting my late-night gaming. (Also, each time claiming that it successfully installed updates, shortly followed by the message that new updates are available again.) If I need to disconnect all non-windows drives, as annoying as that is, I'd rather do it on the first go.

I've now installed the update, and it's a total disaster! Nothing went wrong! It worked flawlessly! What am I meant to complain about now?

Most likely, yes.
Yet another reason why i still use Office 2003.

I'd be very surprised if activation is tied to the OS in that way, given it's done via Microsoft accounts nowadays.
-
@RaceProUK They still have to make sure you're only using it on the permissible number of machines, though. Otherwise why would you specifically need to activate it for each machine you use it on?

I just noticed an option in fonts:

Micro-s-o_ft are intentionally disabling startup applications with a d in their name because they're scared of systemd
</Timebandit>
-
@dcon Nope. I already tried it both ways and left it turned off. Also, on reboot all of my fonts reappear regardless of the setting.
FWIW, that option "should" only hide fonts that are installed by the system for use in languages that don't match your chosen input language(s). It "should" have no effect on fonts you install. "Should". :P

It was paired okay but disconnecting almost instantly. I tend to reinstall regularly to get rid of shit I don't need any more.
However, your post prompted me to mess around with it and now it seems to be working (although I have already uninstalled all my games :( ) so I might not need to burn it all just yet \o/

New problem found, my virus scanner is now missing. That's unhelpful.

Good to hear
<rant>When solving an issue, the way it should be done is this:
- Fiddle with it a bit to see if that fixes it
- If not, investigate properly, diagnose, and fix
- If that fails, nuke from orbit and start again
Thing is, too many people jump straight from 1 to 3, which often wastes more time than doing 2.
</rant>
That wasn't really a rant, more an observation. Oh well.
