One time a coworker had some kind of an energy bar or whatever (definitely a bar). She took a bite and said, "This tastes like ass." Then she offered an opportunity for others to sample it. Needless to say, no one took her up on that.
How strange, over here that'd guarantee a lot of takers I guess we like to share in misery.

RE: Dream WTF
I convinced myself I was in a coma and couldn't wake up. I panicked because everything wasn't real.
I've had something similar, attempting to wake up from a nightmare. I got up out of bed, switched the lights on, and could still see the dream overlaid on my vision. I had to go splash cold water on my face to get rid of it.

RE: Deadlock Empire
Awesome find! That'll be really handy for going over with the junior devs.
It's a good illustration of the hazards of multi threading, and using low level tooling such as monitor.enter, etc.
That's why I prefer to see people using locks, unless we've got some really specialised high performance scenario. They're simpler to understand and maintain. If you add in some best practices, like using a dedicated lock for each job, you can minimise problems.
I really like the double checked lock pattern, because it eliminates the need for even acquiring the lock if your condition is not met.
// don't even bother acquiring the lock if it's already been loaded if (!isLoaded) { // remember that, when isLoaded is false, multiple threads can wait for this lock, so it's // important to check isLoaded again, to ensure we don't end up with multiple calls to Load lock (loadLock) { // we need to check if we were the first one to acquire the lock, or if we were just queuing // while another thread was doing the load if (!isLoaded) { Load(); isLoaded = true; } } }
It's a slight shame that there's no examples of lock abuse in the challenges.
Fun fact: in Java, double checked locking didn't used to work, because the compiler saw both if statements, and optimised one of them away! You had to work around it by farming your if logic out to another method, so they looked like two different checks. I don't believe this is still a problem in Java, but I've not worked with Java in over 10 years.

I didn't have time to read the thread too thoroughly, but didn't see any mention of which SQL engine you were using.
I don't think MSSQL supports a transaction isolation level of read only, it doesn't appear so from looking at the doc pages.
That's a shame, it'd have almost been too easy.

RE: Android without google?
@MrL if you're after alternative app stores for Android with no Google nonsense, I'd highly recommend APK Pure. I've been using it for a few years with good results.
You don't even need to install the app, you can just use the web interface if you want to keep your android installation lightweight.

RE: Inessential Weirdnesses
projects that use Git make everybody use Git, not just the programmers
I find that this point is overlooked quite frequently.
Not everyone involved in development projects are techy. Sure UX people usually have enough tech clout to use JS/HTML and CSS, but what about the asset/media guys. They tend to be more artistic (and less techy) in my experience, and have difficulties with the likes of SVN, never mind Git.

@HardwareGeek yes, but I only played the original. It was very good back in the day, I've no idea what the sequels are like though.
The original was pretty much, "what if Guild Wars was an RTS?", and it gave me many hours of fun.
I've just looked at some videos, and the latest one looks gorgeous! I think I'll have to check it out.

@DoctorJones In the same spirit:
The genus Moderaterus contains three species, inluding Boomzillerus genua trolleybus, commonly known as the Kneeling Warthog. The species of this genus and its descendants may be called Warthogs, though the species name is not particularly appropriate, for these creatures are not warlike.
While it is commonly thought that these warthogs lay eggs, it is not a universally known fact, that this is not correct. Warthogs, as well as other species of carnivorous reptiles are more commonly known for producing their offspring at night when young. Warthogs and several other warthogs, such as the Warthog's dog have sometimes been identified as Warthogs.
The warthog's name is derived from the Indo-European root †hōrwág, which means to strike, to strike, to strike, or to run. In English it is a word meaning "strike at or to strike."
The family Karadans is one of the five families of carnivorous reptiles. K. brachygos are generally larger than the family Karadans and have a variety of long snout-like teeth along the ends of the mandibles with two incisors. When mature, the Krantans will form a small, flat head and can vary

RE: Lies, Damn Lies and Story Points
Do your stories have a fairly consistent point value? Does your point scale vary linearly with hours?
Ours do. Whenever we do sprint planning, we always identify the smallest story, and then use that as a measuring stick for assessing the other stories, i.e. is this story bigger or smaller than that story? Is it twice as big, etc?
We used to struggle quite a bit before we began using this approach.

RE: Game Deals Thread
If you like escape rooms, there's a game called "we were here" that's currently free on PSN and Steam.
It's a 2 player escape room, it's very good, considering it's free. I'd say it's between 1 and 2 hours of playtime. It's definitely worth giving it a try if you've got someone to play with.
