Government idiots, who don't understand technology, attempt to regulate the internet
Some choice quotes
authentication used by banks could also by employed by internet firms to crack down on bullying and grooming
Absolutely, we need more of that "authentication used by banks", it'll fix everything!
companies such as WhatsApp to contribute to society over the negative costs of their technology, such as end-to-end encryption
Yeah, end to end encryption is the real problem. Fuck encryption, what did it ever do for us? Oh yeah, it allowed us to do secure banking! You seem to be contradicting yourself.
she [Theresa May] will urge social media firms to treat violent misogyny with the same urgency as they do terror threats
Sounds like a great idea... Let's see how that would play out...
: So, Sergeant Best, why did we fail to prevent the bomb from being set off down town?
: Well sir, we were too busy dealing with Mrs Fallon's complaint about someone calling her a "frumpy bitch".
: Damn, I guess that's equal priority, and I suppose it's "first come, first served". So how's Mrs Fallon's case going?
: We're still following up leads, but we cannot identify the perp until we get more of that "authentication used by banks".
: Yeah, we really need some of that sweet, sweet, authentication. That'll solve everything. -
RE: :wtf: How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread)
: Oooo, fun! Let's see what fresh WTFs will be created here!
: We would like to commission a plugin that enables private, encrypted messaging between end-users.
: So far so good, sounds pretty sane so far.
Keep in mind with this plugin it is technically impossible for you to read members private conversations provided they have a reasonably strong passphrase.
: Brilliant, Jeff will no longer be able to snoop around PM chains, and accidentally leave likes.
: Have the server store an encrypted private key and public key per user
: Have the server store an encrypted conversation key per participant in private messages (encrypted using end users private key)
: Erm, if all the private keys are on the server, I don't think it's as "technically impossible" as you think.

I love how they completely ignore the question.
https://meta.discourse.org/t/account-temporarily-on-hold/95451
: A member of my site just asked why his account was put on hold. He made his account about a day/2 days ago and he posts quite often. Do you know why this happens/how I can disable this? Thanks.
: *Link to detailed explanation of why accounts get put on hold*
: Thanks! Is there a way I can…disable this? Me and my staff effectively take care of actual spam when it appears and I don’t need this aspect.
: CLOSEDHere's the best part:
This topic will be automatically deleted in a day.
So nobody else will be able to find this question, see that it's already been asked, and see the non-answer. Let the echo chamber continue!
Wheeeeeeeee! :-D
...and here comes PieFlavor to explain how awesome Jeff is again...

A machine learning algorithm walks into a bar...
The bartender says: "What would you like to drink?"
The machine learning algorithm replies: "What's everyone else having?"

News flash, Stack Exchange sites are run by jackasses
So, I tend to use some of the Stack Exchange sites other than Stack Overflow. The other sites tend to be a little bit more easy going than SO, but I've noticed a recent trend where the pedantic dickweeds are finding their way into those sites too.
Long story short, there's a debate on the RPG stack exchange site about comment misuse. There are a number of threads about it, but I responded to this one in particular.
: We want to reduce arguing in comments
Well, what do they consider arguing in comments? Pretty much anything that disagrees with the fucking answer. Want to leave a comment that suggests some improvements to an answer (as is the Stack Exchange norm?), well fuck you, it will be deleted as soon as a mod comes along.
I decided to leave an answer to try to add some reason back into the discussion. Then the comments started pouring in, that funnily enough, disagreed with my answer. Oh, the fucking ironing.
: Don't mis-identify valid comments as misuse, it's valuable to suggest improvements to answers, or question their veracity. The fucking UI even tells us to do this when we cast a downvote!
: Does not compute!!! We delete tehz comments!

@cursorkeys said in In other news today...:
Detectives also searched the students home and found no evidence that he possessed or had immediate access to any type of firearm. Investigators say there was no evidence that the student had any intent to commit harm to students or faculty.
"The student used extremely poor judgment[sic] in making the comment, but in light of the actual circumstances, there was clearly no evidence to support criminal charges," stated on the Allen Parish Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
How the fuck is that poor judgement?
Poor judgement is pausing for a few seconds when the wife asks you "does this make me look fat?".
Poor judgement is using an internet proxy at work to circumvent corporate filtering.
Poor judgement is launching a full police investigation when a kid makes an innocent offhand remark in class.Overreaction much?

Tales from Stack Exchange - A lesson from Jeff about moderation
I originally mentioned this in Tales from Stack Exchange - Coworker is lying about having kids. What should I do?
, but I thought it deserved a wider audience...said:
Moderators are supposed to be exemplars of 99% good community behavior, and part of good community behavior is recognizing problem behaviors -- even your own!
recognizing problem behaviors -- even your own
recognizing problem behaviors -- even your own

@Lorne-Kates how would downloading a picture of the server help?! I'm beginning to think you're not taking these performance improvements seriously...

<> BAM! and the entire comment thread below my answer has been deleted, as if to illustrate my point. </>
Damn, I should have taken a screenshot for posterity.
It's funny how, even though Jeff isn't involved in Stack Exchange any more, he's managed to encourage every single fucking mod over there to behave like he does.

RE: :wtf: How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread)
Ooooooo, look at this one!!!
Specifically:
When run on my forum, the “most toxic posters” list corresponded well with members our moderators are keeping an eye on. Aside from “toxicity” the measures of “inflammatory”, “attack on author”, “attack on commenter” were also reasonably accurate - at least enough to highlight the most problematic behaviour on the forum.
We could have a new section on the "Users" page that ranks users by toxicity! That would be so fucking cool! :-D
Also see this for bonus lols
There were one or two anomalies. For example, one of our “most toxic” members turned out to be a wonderfully kind chap who was one of our forum’s earliest joiners and freely donated money to help with our running costs. Why so toxic? It turns out that he signs off posts with his nickname, “Dick,” and as far as the Perspective API is concerned, that’s rather uncivil.

I fucking hate StackOverflow sometimes
<rant>
It really annoys me how people on StackOverflow are more interested in keeping their house clean than actually helping people.I asked a question about whether accurate technical documentation exists for .Net Core 2.0, because the Microsoft documentation is actually wrong, and it gets put on hold due to the "subjective nature" of the question. Erm... excuse me, that's not subjective. The answer is going to be right or wrong.
What do you expect from a community that was crafted in Jeff's image?
