RE: Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition
Today in being a complete asshole: A person attempting to use a bus stop as a lane for overtaking a line of cars waiting to pass a roadwork. The driver of the bus I was on (which had just left the stop) was not impressed and completely blocked the asshole from trying to rejoin the line of cars by first closing the gap the driver was trying to force into, and then making sure that any further attempt to cut ahead would mean either driving up on the sidewalk, or get slapped by the side of the bus.

With CES going on, the battle to include AI has intensified. MSI has also taking the extra step of combining two different kinds of shit to make something shit-tacular, even updating their homepage to reflect this.
AIoT, because surely nothing will go wrong from combining AI and IoT...

@Lorne-Kates The next area of FF14 will be the WTDWTF bikeshed, where you can grind reputation with the local denizens to reach the esteemed rank of Trust Level 3 for access to the Lounge, in which you can obtain the needed items to venture deep into the highly dangerous Trolleybus Garage raid and vanquish the foes within.

RE: Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition
@dkf As long as you get the version that can be used for anti-personnel purposes, as the normal anti-tank projectiles are useless against pedestrians. (Although, being hit with an anti-tank projectile straight on will still probably be very painful, even if it wont activate).
But you can also do the thing that some criminals in Sweden did when they managed to steal an AT-4. They were going to use it on a rival gang, of course, going up to their base to fire it into their building.
-
The one firing the weapon did it from a distance of 10-15 meters. The projectiles need a distance of at least 30 meters to activate. Police found the unexploded projectile stuck in a washing machine.
-
The one firing the missing laid completely straight facing the target. There is a large flame going out the back of the launcher, meaning when firing it from a lying position you need to lie at an angle so you wont get your legs toasted by the flame. Police also found a bloody trail leading away from where it had been fired.

RE: WTF Bites
So I decided to take a quick look at Paint 3D.
For whatever reason, Open hasn't been translated. Clicking the big empty white box does nothing. Clicking the small empty white box gives this:
I see. Clicking the white rectangle here opens the Remix 3D site in a browser, on a 404 error.
All in all, I give it 8/10.

A problem with open source OS is that the translations can be lacking and you get random snippets of text in english when the translation is missing. Good thing that doesn't happen in a proprietary OS!
(Recent would be translated as "Senaste" or "Senast använda".)

RE: A fool and his not-really-money are soon parted
Today in the news: Two Bitcoin mining companies who were going for cheap computing in northern Sweden went bust. Both left a bunch of unpaid debts, even though one never even started mining.
The Miami-based company NGDC ... stopped mining earlier this autum. The explanation is that [power company] cut the power due to unpaid bills.
How much in unpaid bills? Nearly $1.6M in debt to the power company. Oh, and attempts to contact the company has failed so there's that too. The other company that never even started mining only left $55k in unpaid rents. I know that someone was planning to start in my hometown too, guess that project never got off the ground either as I've heard nothing about it since.

Fun fact: when I was at the company 50-year anniversary there were some guys there doing free RFID chip implants, listing "train ticket in your hand" as a potential use case. Dunno how well supported that actually is atm, though. May be a bit early and I'm not jumping on that train before it's fully tested, proven and in major usage.

RE: NVidia Version Schema
@the_quiet_one Oh, hmm... goes to check
Yep. As said. The layout is very much fixed size with no horizontal scrollbar. And because the advertisements are the most important thing they are the ones that will always show.Let's check how AMD is doing, for comparision.
Oh, look, their layout has properly collapsed down to fit the window size. And what is also missing from their download page? Stupid advertisements! And for a bonus Nvidia WTF: I was playing a fullscreen game and the Geforce Experience stole focus with a notification popup that there was a driver update available. For fucks sake, Nvidia. Your software for gaming should not be stealing focus from games (or anything else for that matter). You fucking retards.

RE: WTF Bites
That juice topic reminded me of this I've found at a couple hotels:
"For our juice dispenser we should have a touchscreen to select juice. Now how do we solve this problem?"
"I know, let's use an iPad! It's literally the only touchscreen of an appropriate size that exists!"
"BRILLANT!"Because you totally need to get a $400 tablet just for the touchscreen. Because there's NOT A SINGLE cheaper tablet that could do the job equally well, or even just a plain touchscreen connected to whatever logic controller the device is using. Idiots.

RE: WTF Bites
Fuck modern software brainworms.
So, being on MilwaukeePC, I need to disable all the auto-updating on my computer until I got a fast and stable connection again. One of those is Geforce Experience which auto-downloads driver updates. The process as it should be:
- Open Geforce Experience.
- Go to settings.
- Disable automatic download of driver updates.
The experience of Geforce however is this:
- Open Geforce Experience.
- Wait for it to load because it's apparently a webapp and needs to contend with itself hogging all the bandwidth for the driver download.
- Have the entire app disabled because you need to login with your Geforce account to do anything in it.
- Login with your Geforce account, because it apparently had forgot your login status as well as the ticking of the "Keep me logged in" box from last time.
- After being logged in, go to settings and disable automatic download of driver updates.
Fuck the Geforce experience. Makes me start looking at AMD because their software doesn't seem to be made by complete retards and lets you do everything without needing a special account to do so.
Fun fact, the above process also applies to Skype for Windows 7 where if you had it installed and want to disable it autostarting on boot you need to log in with your Skype account for that setting to be available in the options. Why the fuck is that setting tied to your account and not available with the settings that are available without needing to log in?

RE: Intel making us slow down
@sockpuppet7 Yeah, and I agree fully with Linus here that the patches are complete garbage. Intel fucked up, so they will take the performance hit that the patch causes. Security is not opt-in. Especially not after they have explicitly gone out and said said that they are going to put security first now. Arseholes.

RE: Mr. Jetson teaches network technology
@blakeyrat This first book mainly had confusing quotes. Although some things I do define as wrong.
- Windows Server is not the most used network OS.
- TCP/IP is not a protocol, it's a collection of protocols.
- I've never applied to InterNIC to get an IP, I just get that from my local ISP. Also, asking InterNIC for IP addresses in 2012 would be a bit difficult, seeing as that organisation closed down in 1998.
- A DNS server is not a requirement for internet connection or communication on a network, although it does help a lot.
The name of the course is a bit misleading, as it focuses on basic server administration. The set of courses is part servers, part networks and network equipment.

RE: Hacking News
For GPU.zip to work, a malicious page must be loaded into the Chrome or Edge browsers. Under-the-hood differences in the way Firefox and Safari work prevent the attack from succeeding when those browsers process an attack page. Another requirement is that the page linked to in the iframe must not be configured to deny being embedded by cross-origin websites.

I got this postcard with an unsolicited job ad in my mail today:
I wonder how they managed to get the red squiggly spellchecker lines to show up in the printed version. Is there perhaps a wooden table involved somewhere? Also, good skills getting them on both the names of the recruitment agency and the company you're recruiting for. Quality work there.
(In case someone is wondering, the ad is for a job as a 1st level support drone at one of the large TV and internet providers in Sweden, (Also, my sister mentioned it being the single largest source of work-related complaints to her union in the region.))

@the_quiet_one said in Targeted advertising fail:
@boomzilla I know. For some reason, I just get more annoyed when the ads are so specific to something I had recently been interested in. Maybe it's because I've spent so much time looking at the products in my search that after I'm finished, having to see them again is just irritating. It's kind of like when you're in a conversation with someone and the subject naturally shifts, but your friend just keeps returning to the previous subject over and over again.
It's an irrational irritation, I know, but I can't be bothered to change.
This might explain a bit about the psychology of why you feel that way and why it's not so irrational.
Ok, I did read most of that article. And yes, I do agree with limiting content width for a more pleasurable reading experience on wider screens, but there is a thing as taking it too far and getting the opposite effect.
This is on a normal 1080p screen!

RE: Commuting WTF Thread
So... Yesterday when going home from work I ended up behind a prime asshole. He wanted to put money on his bus pass, put on the minimum amount and then paid for the bus ticket which is just a bit less than the minimum amount. So instead of just paying with his card, he first had to pay with his card and then pay with his bus pass, giving the driver extra work and making it take extra long for him to get on the bus. (Yeah, there is a 10% discount for paying with your bus pass, but not actually putting enough money for a few trips is very .)
And this morning I got some headache from sitting in front of a dumb bitch. She was on phone with a friend. Also put the phone on speakerphone so everyone around could hear the conversation ofc. And all she said was constant whining.
: Why is this bus stopping at this bus stop? I mean, seriously!
: (Maybe to let off passengers wanting to get off here?)
...
: Oh my god, this bus is running so late!
: (What are you talking about? The bus is running right on schedule right now.)
...
: I hope it wont get stuck at the red light! It got stuck at the red light! And when her friend on the phone didn't respond for a bit:
: Hello? Are you still there? Do you hear anything I'm saying?
: Yeah, I hear you.
: Did you hear what I just said?
: No.
: Then why did you say that you are hearing me?Well, I understand why her friend would tune out as everything coming from the person behind me was a constant stream of whining. And what was coming from the phone was 90% wind noises (it's a windy day today) and 10% "Yeah." as responses to the whining.

RE: Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition
Rrgh. Vexing stuff on the road. So there is a 2-lane section of road coming up and you are behind a slow-moving truck. What do you do?
- Overtake when the 2-lane section starts.
- Overtake when the 2-lane section ends.
- Don't overtake.
If you choose 2, then congratulations, you are one of today's moron drivers! And it happens surprisingly often too. Why do people think that keeping on staying behind the slow vehicle until the "2-lane section ending soon" sign and then overtaking is the best idea? It's utter retarded dumbshittery! Can nobody plan their driving more than negative 10 seconds in advance or something?

1986 nuclear reactor explosion
It was not an explosion! Nuclear reactors cannot explode no matter how much you try, you can't get such a reaction from U-235. The term is "meltdown" for a fucking reason!
Gah!
And if I may attempt some . The reactor did explode. Twice. Just because the nuclear fuel itself in incapable of exploding doesn't mean a reactor can't explode. In this case, the first explosion was caused by steam pressure buildup. Which would get pretty damn high from a runaway nuclear reaction in a water-cooled reactor with non-working pumps.
