WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else
-
@remi
If you connect the old drive now, it just might crap out yet. The new drive probably has the same GPT UUIDs (unless you regenerated them).Edit: I shall write 50 times on the blackboard "GPT means GUID Partition Table"
-
@Applied-Mediocrity I didn't regenerate anything, and when I was using
fdisk
to check the partition table after copying, I could see that indeed the new disk was now using an identifier identical to the old one.I did boot Linux on the old disk with the new one plugged in (because I wanted to move/resize the Linux partition, and the Debian live CD for some reason does not include
gparted
-- here's the !), and Linux did put a couple of suspicious messages while booting about the disks, but then it still managed everything properly (and the messages flashed away in half a second like every other boot message, so I don't know what they said exactly).I did not try that on Windows, and definitely does not intend to -- I'm not going to push my luck!
Unrelated: what can I do with an old 256 GB SSD that is still more-or-less working but failing?
-
@Gąska said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Because that's how things have worked since forever?
False. Copying overrides the clipboard, obviously.
But nothing about taking a screenshot implies copying to clipboard.
When I used Gimp to create the screenshot above I did not expect it to override the clipboard.
And it did not.
-
@Zecc OK, I tested out the application. Yes, I agree it's a little silly. Not only does it put screenshot in the clipboard at the same time it opens the editor, but it also live-updates the clipboard with every pen stroke you make while editing.
I still think TRWTF is keeping important stuff in clipboard and nowhere else.
-
I tried the new Snip & Sketch thing in Win10. The default options are the exact opposite of what I want. Here's what I configured it to (screenshot taken with the old Snipping Tool):
-
@Atazhaia said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Apparently the new MS Store-based Snipping Tool will overwrite whatever is in the copy buffer when you take a screenshot.
IIRC the snipping tool always did that.

Keep it as a backup. Just in case, your new disk fails. Or the system on it gets corrupted by an update.
-
@kazitor said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
print screen+crop externally
But Alt+PrtScn works quite nicely... (someone else already posted the image). I'm still using that on Win10. Well, for now:
-
@Atazhaia said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
So is the tools lacking sensible defaults. Got it.
I dunno... I think it's sensible. Every time I've opened the snipper it's because I want to copy/paste an image. (Generally into this forum!)
-
@Zecc Those are exactly opposite to how I use the tool.
-
@dcon I am genuinely glad it works for you, and ever gladder that the options are there for us to be both satisfied.

I hope you mean that as "preserve it as it is now, keep it unplugged in case you need to read it again anytime soon"? Writing any data on a failing hard drive can only mean disaster for whatever is already on there.

@Atazhaia Bonus noise like that is why I use ClipboardFusion. Ctrl Shift V, and then this pops up:

Wait....
Chrome already does that....

@Tsaukpaetra So I guess that's how they got it too?

Naturally stolen as a course of the port.

@Tsaukpaetra I assume they're telling you to go to Flight Hub to get a ticket to Seattle and get the latest Insider Preview build directly from Bill Gates

go to Flight Hub
I read that as "go to Fight Club" and thought "yes, Windows 10 makes me angry too, but that may be a little excessive".

Just installed the May update. I decided to upgrade from the previous build this time instead of doing a clean install. I had to use the upgrade assistant since checking for updates in the settings app wasn't doing anything. During the upgrade process, the percentage jumped to 44%, then back to 38%, so I guess percent progress is still not really something Microsoft has managed to nail down yet. Upon logging in, my desktop backgrounds had been changed to a solid black, and I had to manually put back the images I had. Yet, the custom lockscreen image I had selected stayed just fine. After the upgrade, I uninstalled the upgrade assistant, and I was presented with a dialog asking me whether it had uninstalled correctly or needed to be run again in compatibility mode. Brilliant.
Backup & Sync from Google is still weird. I had it disabled throughout all the restarts in hopes of it not freaking out at the sync folder being missing. When I finally started it up, it complained about the sync folder being missing anyway even though it was right where it always was. Interestingly, I am actually syncing multiple accounts to different folders with it, and none of them are default paths, yet it was only concerned with the folder for the first/primary account. The others were just fine...
-
I normally update right away, but I don't feel like unhooking all of my external drives and they didn't get around to putting the fix for that problem into the installer before releasing 1903.
It'd be worse on my little tablet, where I (almost) have to install from a USB drive.

"Note: The drive reassignment is not limited to removable drives. Internal hard drives may also be affected."
-
Not to mention the message:
"Your PC has hardware that isn't ready for this version of Windows 10."It sure sounds better than the more truthful "This version of Windows 10 isn't ready for your PC's hardware", right?

I didn't look into this one; it could be anything hot-pluggable (which includes SATA drives on compatible controllers) or just a general screwup of drive enumeration order and matching to the existing drive letter assignments.

Six of one, a half-dozen of the other; they use the same message for hardware that needs driver fixes.

Decided to do that in my VM... Upgrade worked ok. Went to uninstall the helper - the Settings app crashes when trying to display installed apps. Control panel worked...
Edit: Ran all updates and checked for WinStore updates. Now Settings doesn't crash.

@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
this is exactly the same ISO that was made available on April 19 via VisualStudio subscription which was labeled as Release Preview.
It seems like Release Preview is what gets pushed to the public
Finally, there is the Release Preview ring. This is the branch that is in the retail world that receives monthly updates, security fixes, bug fixes, things like that, and are released to customers.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
How fucking hard is it to slipstream fucking two Tuesdays worth of updates so we don't have to download that shit post-install? Fucking lazy assholes all of them.
That's why I create my own installation ISOs with all current updates already slipstreamed in:
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
@El_Heffe I do that all the time with dism.exe and .msu files downloaded from Microsoft Update Catalog but still I shouldn't have to do that for the latest OS build for fuck sake.
It's "the thing" now. I upgraded my Mac to the latest and greatest. Well almost. Had to make it go look for more updates. Because xcode said my OS was still incompatible and wouldn't update.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
but still I shouldn't have to do that for the latest OS build for fuck sake.
There are a lot of things that Microsoft should do.
And we all know how well that works.
-
@levicki:
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
That's not the point and we are not talking about application updates.
I wasn't either (except the reference to xcode). I updated the OS to Mojave (using Apple's updater). That did not update to the most current version.
When I install a major OS upgrade I expect it to come with all the latest hotfixes
Exactly.
and not hit Windows update immediately like a cheap whore hits on her crack pipe.
And that's what Apple does too. (Except it didn't even bother telling me. I didn't know it hadn't fully updated until I tried to update xcode)
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
why not fucking slipstream them and release new ISO and save us some bandwidth, power, and time?
Windows 10 was free, what did you expect, something nicely done like Debian?
-
Microsoft is working on something to make Windows Update less painful
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
There are 2 important updates available, why not fucking slipstream them and release new ISO and save us some bandwidth, power, and time?
Maybe doing that would require more testing before it could be certified for release on the official ISO channel, that would delay it long enough for more updates to come out, etc.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Are you saying that those updates which were released specifically for this 1903 build revision (.30 in ISO image) which bring it up to .113 and then to .116 were released untested?
Of course they're released untested. They're released so customers can test them.
-

Not necessarily, but maybe having them install directly together with the ISO would cause other problems that wouldn't occur going through the normal update procedure.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Sorry but that is impossible.
With Windows 10, everything is possible.

I upgraded to 1903. And I got welcomed back by MS after logging back in again.
Apparently the message must fit on one line. And if not, just add three dots to show there's more to the message but with no way of seeing the rest. And also have the dismiss message button flow into the text itself. Quality!
-
Not to mention, the text appears to be complete gibberish
-
The upgrade also broke my soundcard, so I will have some fun trying to see if I can fix that or if I have to resort to the shitty integrated one until next computer.
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
If it's Creative, don't bother
It is a Creative. And fully reinstalling the driver did fix the issue. Also, I noticed that they had released an updated driver earlier this year. Despite it now being 9 year old hardware.
-
Also, a bonus wtf from me fixing the issue. Missing translation!
It's not like that item has been named the same since like Windows 95 at least...
-
@Atazhaia What's missing? I don't see any blanks?
