Just like the players. Or the people who have to listen to the players talk about the game.

Challenge: You don't have to implement it, but what would an automated DFHack integration test even be?
Losing at all possible inputs.
There are some sequences of inputs that will never result in a game over.
For example, if your fortress is down to one vampire or werewolf stuck between some walls and everyone else is dead and has been properly memorialized and your fortress is horrible enough that nobody wants to move in, you can leave that thing running indefinitely and that last citizen will never die.
That sounds like a bug. And it doesn't sound very fun.
Nope, it's because vampires and werewolves can't die of hunger or thirst.
More seriously, if all of your dwarves are vampires/werewolves, why isn't that a game over condition?

putting someone who does not need to eat or drink in a sealed box does not allow any of the four types of insanity to kill them.
Thus supporting my statement that (emphasis added)
the game needs to be modified so that they can die of boredom.

I'm not sure who to blame for this one. I can't get it to reproduce on another site on the same browser, or on the same site with a different browser. This is Outlook Web Access on Chrome; the grammar checker is suggesting that I replace "have not" with "havent" (note the lack of apostrophe).
, Google and/or Microsoft?
-
@scarlet_manuka they have not been used to raise the stakes.
It's not Chrome!
Normal Word 2016 doesn't do it!
Well, except to complain about voices.
I bet it's OWA's spellchecker.

It turns out that the beeper was the fire alarm which was in an error state and not protecting the building.
How the hell could he not hear that? It was plainly audible from his office. Two seconds on, two seconds off, at high volume. How can someone be so oblivious??
Why are you voiding this man's chance of winning a Darwin award?
-
@tsaukpaetra As I said, I couldn't replicate it on another site in Chrome, but I also couldn't replicate it using OWA on Edge. So I don't know who to blame.
New WTF: browsing forums for a software product I use, and seeing a thread about installation problems where the following advice is repeated often:
the normal installer fails, you need to add --silent to resolve the issues.
No, --silent doesn't make the errors go away. It just stops telling you about them.

I know expecting the news to report the news is TRWTF, but can we at least try? That was a heck of a storm yesterday and I'd love it if the article with the time-lapse pictures actually had the time-lapse pictures in it.

I understand why gnomes would high-five, but why would they kick each other's feet until they bleed?
-
@mott555 Apparently they route the video through a player that ad blockers block, because I got a popup asking me to disable my ad blocker and eventually where the video would show it put "Video could not be loaded. If you have Ad Block enabled, please add this site to the white list."

They didn't kick each other; they both suffered compound fractures on the landing after having been tossed.

werewolf dwarves are perfectly normal citizens three weeks out of every four. Don't discriminate.
Plus they make excellent soldiers. Otherwise career-ending injuries can be healed just by waiting a month for the arms and legs to grow back. The fully-automated containment and scheduling systems are a wonder to behold.
-
@aygeeplus Well sure, but if all your normal dwarves are dead, what's the point?

You can take the same Rorschach test and add your own captions. The team will use this data to adjust Norman’s model to see if he starts seeing less murder. We can only hope.
(Link added because the stupid article didn't include it)Oh! I like taking tests!
Let's see what I see...
Somehow, I don't think this will help much.
Edit: And I'm rather disappointed that each inkblot was mirrored. WTF?
Edit edit: Also, this was apparently published on April 1, 2018.

what's the regular point of dwarf fortress?
Some players use a werewolf as a designated survivor in case of mayhem. Because no matter what, a werewolf in a closet will keep the fortress technically inhabited until someone comes by to reclaim all the wealth.

@mott555 There's two possibilities here: Either the driver was compliant before, or it was not. Both ways, the manufacturer is retarded.

https://www.reddit.com/r/security/comments/8ofiiw/chinese_border_police_installed_software_on_my
Hello,
My wife and I recently crossed a Chinese border where the police installed software on our Android devices (her Moto x4 and my Huawei Mate 9).
I saw the installation process, an icon appear on the home screen, the police ran the application and then the icon hid itself. Not sure if it rooted my phone or what. I know something was running on my phone because they used a handheld device to confirm our phones were communicating with their system before letting us go.
Anyone have any suggestions on what steps to take to confirm there is no surveillance software or anything remaining on my phone? I'd like to do as thorough of a wipe as I can...
Thanks for any suggestions!

@bb36e Wow I'm not a big security guy but this is fucked up:

The comments on this thread, as usual, are golden.

@blakeyrat Most vehicles are lojacked. If you buy a kitchen knife the seller lasers a QR code with your id code onto it, in case you stab someone. To buy gas you need an ID card and facial recognition.

@tsaukpaetra the unfortunate thing is that most cyberpunk universes are dystopias, so you really wouldn't want to live in them

So for some reason YouTube thought I might be interested in the product this ad is pushing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqDqt5ci3uw
And yeah, they're wrong, but also WHY IS IT USING UNDERTALE MUSIC?
Specifically, the track named Undertale:
I'm just gonna go ahead and spoil the game's plot
This music plays in a scene where you're walking through the abandoned home of the king, who is sad that his children died and decided to kill any human child that comes to the underground in an attempt to break a magical barrier.

@ben_lubar "But we do that in Windows all the time. Why, Visual Studio replaces half the Windows components!"

So if I steal an already purchased kitchen knife and stabs someone, the owner of the knife gets jailed for the murder?
-
@atazhaia Exactly, so it incentivizes people to hold on tight to their weapons.
-
I know Facebook loves their like icon, bit this is a bit ridiculous....

The serration of the edge of the knife encodes your unique citizen ID, so that they can identify you from the cutting marks. It also makes citizen IDs with relatively high entropy quite sought after, because the edge resulting from a citizen ID with long runs of just zeroes or ones in the binary representation isn't that great.

WTF Bite: Twitter's robot that determines when content is offensive.

WTF of my day Our (soon to be replaced) web proxy filter is just a bit overeager.
I was tasked with installing a Epson scanner on a Mac. First thing I noticed: The dumbed-down "Just Scan Everything" page works, the "Advanced Settings" page yields an error.
So I turned to Google because I know fuck-all about MacOS.
"Google.com is blocked for offensive content!" Oh for fuck's sake!
Let's try "Epson.de" directly. Maybe a driver update will fix it? After all, this thing looks like no one updated anything for four years?
"Epson.de is blocked for offensive content!"
Which dumbass configured that shit?

Whenever I ask that question, I then quietly check to see if it was myself a few years ago…

No problem; just use a RLL code. Many physical media formats suffer from run-length problems (too long or too short sequences of a repeated bit, before the complementary bit comes along), so RLL codes have been invented to work around these issues.

For me, it usually is. In fact, almost always is.

@blakeyrat my guess is that people just automatically report anything with trump in it. it looks like the warning might be based on people reporting stuff as offensive. but hey, who knows, it's twitter.
