RE: 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
I'm a member of a forum that has several topics with over 10000 posts. Nobody bats an eye at 1000-post topics there.
How does it feel to know you've been Doing It WrongTM all this time?

RE: How can we increase adoption of c/c++ alternatives?
I like this
threadtopic. Even if I do acknowledge that I need to take the time to learn C++ properly in the near future due to its ubiquity. If C++ had a stable ABI, it would be easier for other languages to talk to C++ libraries and provide less of an incentive to use C++ except for the most performance-critical areas of an application. So far, it hasn't happened, so that's just wishful thinking on my part.
Isn't this supposedly the purpose behind C++11? It really is the core of the issue here. C++ is great at what it's meant to do. It doesn't play well with others though, so either don't use it, or use it everywhere

RE: There should be a "programmers license"...
Well, that settles it, sushi for lunch.
Wasn't Wasabi just a wrapper around VB.NET?

RE: What's a really cool game that no one has made yet?
But it's not a game you can play for 20 minutes daily and accomplish much. And it requires an amount of concentration I usually don't have available after a full day of work.
Yep. At one point I think I was actually drawing an in-game salary from someone working shifts as, essentially, a border guard. Then I realised what I was doing with my life.
On-topic (hah!), I find the whole thing of 'think up a game, realise you've just independently designed existing game X' is my biggest issue. Because I don't generally feel that I could do any better than the existing option.

RE: 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
But, unless we've been hacking the install more than I thought, this is regular Discourse.

RE: How not to comment
I've just realised that I'd done exactly that - I'll hand in my badge and gun now.

RE: Chrome, why you do this?
Because technology is complex and scary and we must hide from it!
Look, I get that Chrome wants to be the browser for EverybodyTM, but where's the browser for me? The one that shows me what the hell it's doing and that's all?
@Onyx - Don't say Opera. Opera's been shit since 12 stopped being standard.

RE: Unsexy Zoe Quinn drollness (prepare the lawyers)
i dont get any of it. this all sounds like a thing that is full of only people under the age of 20. who gives a shit about anything this random bag of fail does.
Sadly, I'm pretty sure most of the people in it are over 20. Under 30, though.
It's mostly that the people involved all think they're big deals in the gaming industry. Zoe describes herself as 'The biggest voice for women in gaming", which is a crock of shit. She might be the loudest, but women have been making games for longer than Zoe's been alive, and they were able to do it without creating drama.
It really comes down to one person who probably has BPD, and a lot of noise being made about this 'sudden reveal' of rampant nepotism in games 'journalism'
But it has sex involved, so everyone wants to take a look.

RE: The IT Crowd
I don't think America can make a comedy about IT. They may as well make it a show about Wizards, since that's how American TV views computers.

RE: The IT Crowd
I stopped really watching Archer with the 5th season. The first 3 were great, but the 4th didn't really make me laugh much and the 5th just felt utterly uninteresting and eh.

RE: HP is SRWTF (SuRreal WTF)
This is Discourse, are you really that surprised?
No, but I wanted to believe. I want to believe that even Jeff-fucking-Atwood wouldn't use Magic Strings that are language dependent for functionality.

RE: Hamburger Spacing Inconsistent
Personally, I'd just prefer to just find a CRT monitor and use that.

RE: What's a really cool game that no one has made yet?
I would argue that the defining traits of an RPG are that the character's skill determines success, not the player's. You can do that without levelling or XP - See Ultima.

RE: What's a really cool game that no one has made yet?
In a more on-topic fashion, I've actually had a cool new game idea, but I'm not sharing it because one of you bastards is going to steal it and beat me to it because I'm so goddamn slow and easily distracted sob I should just uninstall Steam

RE: New Skype Design (also Skype mobile and stuff)
The girlfriend's computer's Skype updated to skeumorphic speech bubbles and shit a while back, but either she rolled it back or there's a way to turn it off, because it isn't like that now. I just haven't let Skype update.
Modern UI design (which is heavily affected by everything's-a-phone-worms) just loves its whitespace. Too much condensed data is hard.

RE: The thread of movie titles and absence of badges. In previous episodes, it was signs you're getting older, chiropractic vs. medicine, atheism vs. Mormonism and religion vs. science with no existentialism nor philosophy thrown in
My partner is Chinese. Her father is a medical professional, mostly in dialysis. He's also a very large proponent of a lot of alternative medicines, traditional Chinese herbalism, magnets, all that stuff. Cultural Inertia is a very powerful force.
Fortunately he keeps it out of the hospital.
