That's why I recommended the Comodo cert - they only do domain validation (ensure that you own the domain name), not the whole background check on you as a person. But I understand not wanting to spend the $$.

RE: Suggestions for SSL cert?
Wildcard certs are relatively expensive - the cheapest I've used is from Comodo (~100 USD / yr)

RE: Products for Dumb Suckers
Meh, explain Twitter, Spotify, Hulu, and others then. We are in an era of shitty product names.
Part of it is that a lot of companies want a cheap .com domain name (all the "normal" names have been taken), and they want a name that has as little competition for keyword searches as possible. I think I remember reading that SyFy changed its spelling for this reason.

RE: "Untrusted" the game
That said, I am perfectly fine with pretending the game's code and globals can't be changed, and trying to play fairly.
I agree. I get much less enjoyment out of (almost) any game playing outside of the "rules". I had a lot of fun getting to the last level "fairly" (it took me longer than you to get through it - probably 5 hours).
-
RE: "Untrusted" the game
Of course, but it's not relevant to my point
Reread your post, including the quote you replied to. Your point was in reply to the topic of preventing "cheating" - why would I assume your point addressed an issue other than what you replied to?
But whatever - not worth arguing about
-
RE: "Untrusted" the game
Something like that would prevent "cheating" from the in-game code window, but wouldn't stop console hacking.
Web games that run client side will always be vulnerable - it's up to the player to do whatever brings them the most enjoyment from the game.
-
RE: "Untrusted" the game
You can do whatever the fuck you want to. It's JavaScript.
...except
window = null
- the ultimate in xss prevention. -
RE: "Untrusted" the game
You can reassign standard library objects in JavaScript? That's horrible.
Looking through some of the Untrusted source code, I noticed
window.eval = {};
, probably to prevent certain cheats. More libraries should do this -
RE: "Untrusted" the game
I remember completing this a while ago, but it doesn't seem to have saved my progress.
player.win = true
Alas, I had opened the site on an incognito tab, so my progress is gone and I'm not going through all the levels again.
If you want to have access to all the levels, and don't mind being a big cheating cheatery cheaterson, you can [spoiler]run
localStorage.levelReached = 22
in Chrome's console, then reload the page.[/spoiler] -
RE: How many styles do we need?
Thanks - I knew I had to set preview-style to "e49af156-2053-4e3e-b352-2e49caf5e9".....something
-
RE: How many styles do we need?
Related: it looks as though now you can't revert back if you select "discourse default" - the options disappear from the menu. I should have known it was a stupid idea to click that.
-
RE: "Untrusted" the game
I like that - it would also be fun to try to invent the most Rube Goldbergian solution for each level.

This can easily lead to a situation of vitamin toxicity.
I just learned the word "Hypervitaminosis" - best word EVARRRRR.

RE: "Untrusted" the game
I stopped yesterday at the final boss. Alas, I had opened the site on an incognito tab, so my progress is gone and I'm not going through all the levels again.
I am also not a fan of how easy it is to lose your progress - it would be nice if there were a url hash save-point system or something.
The final boss level was my favorite. I managed to do it with very little code, but afterwards I found some youtube videos showing some really creative & fun solutions.

RE: Doing it wrong userscripts - Show raw
This is really nice - wish I had found it earlier.
I wrote a quick & dirty bookmarklet that does kind of the same thing for my phone (which doesn't natively have a way to implement userscripts). The downside is it doesn't respond to post loading (you have to run the bookmarklet again), but it works for what I need it for:
javascript:(function(a){var c=a("#topic").attr("data-topic-id");a("div.contents:not(.rawified)").each(function(){var b=a(this).find('button[data-action="share"]').attr("data-post-number"),d='<button class="fa fa-code view-raw" data-url="'+("/raw/"+c+"/"+b)+'" data-post-number="'+b+'"></button>';a(this).addClass("rawified").find("div.actions").prepend(d);a('button.view-raw[data-post-number="'+b+'"]').click(function(b){b='<iframe src="'+a(this).attr("data-url")+'" style="width: 100%; border: 1px solid #ccc;"></iframe>'; a(this).closest("div.contents").after(b)})})})(jQuery);

RE: Ask the entrepreneurs advice
Is it harder to get approved for a loan/mortgage?
If you are in the US and you have your own business, you will need the last 2 years1 of tax statements showing an acceptable level of income/profit for whatever size of loan you are applying for. This goes for refinances too.
1. If I remember correctly - I know it is 1-2 years minimum.

For level 13, [spoiler]I did a version of the "wall follower" algorithm:[/spoiler]
[spoiler]- If you can turn left, do it

RE: Here’s What Happens When You Install the Top 10 Download.com Apps (article)
The whole process just sounds several thousand percent more annoying than ads themselves, but to each their own.
-
RE: Here’s What Happens When You Install the Top 10 Download.com Apps (article)
Get rid of ads by breaking 99% of all sites, spend lots of time whitelisting, then get ads on all the white listed sites? Sounds ideal!
Seriously, I'll never understand the reasoning behind turning js off - it's like using a trebuchet to swat a fly.
-
RE: Ask the entrepreneurs advice
He said two things: if I were to go that way, I'd probably need to find someone to "help" and, "If you like writing code, the last thing you should do is start a business."
I started my own web development business three years ago - I'm still the sole employee, I get to spend at least 80% of my time writing code, and the money has been very good and getting better every year (breakout year in 2014).
I am not really an entrepreneur though. I need a certain amount of money to maintain my lifestyle, and I don't really want to grow the business beyond me because I never want to start spending my time managing people. I like to write code.

RE: Generate XML -- client-side or server-side?
supposedly it can be made to more or less look like it's a seamless part of ours, usually by working in an iframe
Super extra triple good luck.
-
RE: Generate XML -- client-side or server-side?
using js to build XML
I'm a little confused on the flow of the data and what is needed where, but if it were me I would never build xml in js :-)

RE: Do none of the baby forum newcomer idiots not know that Coding Help is an actual category for providing help!?
People who must defend their rightness are often preoccupied with imagined shortcomings of others and perceived attacks form them. They often feel betrayed by others. They justify their criticizing and blaming others to avoid the insight that they themselves might be in error. They fear losing power and will use anger to keep others from asserting themselves. Life becomes miserable for the family because it is fear and control based.

RE: Quickly converting POST requests to multi-part???
Can you alter the raw POST data at the receiving server (using C# or whatever backend language you're using), or does it need to be altered before it hits the server?

I especially like the part where several browser hijackers go into a fight over the homepage URL.
Reminded me of:

RE: The bigpug Moon
I'm always amazed at men's misconceptions of how much blood is involved in the whole affair. It's like watching parody action shows where a papercut sprays the whole room.

It's coming for you, so enjoy your glabrescent ears while you can.

RE: Microsoft insider on why Microsoft sucks (and rocks)
Years ago, I read a story on one of the humor sites that's now long gone (I think it was thespark.com) about someone trying to see what he could get away with in terms of signing on scanners at checkout counters.
I started signing a single straight line on those about 8 years ago. I estimate I've saved 4 hours over that time period by doing so; unfortunately I haven't accomplished anything of value with the extra time.

RE: This 1970s Time-Share Basic manual KICKS YOUR ASS
That's good feedback - I was going to start by running for president because my mom told me I could be anything I wanted to be.
-
RE: This 1970s Time-Share Basic manual KICKS YOUR ASS
I was either trying to be silly or practicing to run for government
-
RE: This 1970s Time-Share Basic manual KICKS YOUR ASS
maybe. doesn't make it less stupid.
Why do you hate america, women, and black people?
Strawman jokes are funny?
-
RE: This 1970s Time-Share Basic manual KICKS YOUR ASS
Improperly capitalized section names. This is a fucking manual not a god-damned BASIC program.
You've never seen all-caps headings before? Hasn't that been a design/typography trend for hundreds of years?

RE: The thread of movie titles and absence of badges. In previous episodes, it was signs you're getting older, chiropractic vs. medicine, atheism vs. Mormonism and religion vs. science with no existentialism nor philosophy thrown in
I turn 0x28 today, and started to feel really old when in another thread on this forum people were reminiscing their first computers and got nostalgic over that they only had 16-odd MB of RAM. Mine had 16k...
That sounds familiar. Our first computer was a VIC-20. I still remember waiting several minutes for a few hundred lines of code to finish saving to cassette tape.

RE: The thread of movie titles and absence of badges. In previous episodes, it was signs you're getting older, chiropractic vs. medicine, atheism vs. Mormonism and religion vs. science with no existentialism nor philosophy thrown in
The sign for me was getting hangovers the day after drinking 4+ beers (commence questioning on what constitutes "a beer")

RE: Cloud hosting providers/planning? (UK)
give them a pass. not worth the money.
Agreed - I haven't figured out a way to make them financially viable for me, being a one-man operation. They are good if you can afford them.
-
RE: Cloud hosting providers/planning? (UK)
Has anyone used Rackspace? They are pricey, but I've had good 3rd hand experiences with them. I don't believe they are in the UK though.

RE: The [Gross PICTURE OF A COW]orkers Thread
The smoke of fish emit redolently stenched up the microwave.

RE: The [Gross PICTURE OF A COW]orkers Thread
I have to admit, I really don't. Especially not in the context of a post where people are cud-chewing and mucus-snorting (and nobody's mentioned it, but you know we're also talking about shit like bathing in patchouli.)
I find the sound of fingernail clippers incredibly annoying (glad to know there's a word for it having read this thread). Also I don't really want to think about parts previously attached to a person flying off around me.
-
RE: The [Gross PICTURE OF A COW]orkers Thread
I once got written up and "counseled" because a cow orker complained about hearing me trimming my fingernails. Not seeing the clippings scattered about the floor, not watching me do it, just hearing the tik, tik, tik of the clippers working, on the far side of three cubicle dividers.
Did you learn to fucking groom yourself at home? I mean it's ridiculous to get written up for that, but I understand the complaint.

RE: This is important - Let's highlight it ! - FF34
That looks a lot like the Wikipedia fundraising blurb, which I can't get a shot of since it is now over.

RE: Wait... what?
The film could encode data other than just images. For example, you could use colors to represent different values of bytes.
"Dwarf Fortress: The Movie"?
-
RE: Wait... what?
How about making film with one field per frame per foot?
Film doesn't have fields, so that would be hard to do :-)

RE: From my friend who works in IT at a school, here are some screenshots of PDFs:
All I can tell ya is that if I treated my customers the way @codinghorror has treated us lately--and I will admit right out that my customers aren't as rude as we have been to him--they would run away from us.
And we would deserve it.
The whole numbered list thing? If one of my customers--or several, as is the case here--hated it that badly, we'd change it to make them happy
To be fair, people who USE discourse are not "customers", so the analogy doesn't really work.
"customer" = person(s) who pay me so I try to make them happy & put up with their shit so they keep paying me.
users != customers.

RE: NULL means "unset"?
That's valid I guess. There are actually some decent php frameworks out there though - Zend is the worst one I've ever used.
