RE: Is it possible to link to a specific point in a users post?
Just curious if this does anything.

RE: Closed Poll: Do you have Discourse Syndrome
I made a post script to spam the league of legends forums (in a single topic, to prove a point, run from a NAS web server) - It could probably be repurposed here.

This should change to be a forward anchor...?

Interesting, links to the same topic with future post items don't retroactively onebox, even if you go back and edit the original post, or add a new link.

RE: Inconsistent links in "Likes" column
I wasn't even aware that was a link until this topic. I thought all those items were actually just statistics.

[@\.. goes to the original url
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/is-it-possible-to-link-to-a-specific-point-in-a-users-post/1213/11and the 'where will this go? goes to the tracking error page.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to link to a specific point of a users post?

RE: Closed Poll: Shall @the_dragon consume @codinghorror?
Throw them off the scent, alterforms are highly secret.

RE: Closed Poll: Shall @the_dragon consume @codinghorror?
Does anybody else notice a resemblance between @the_dragon and nagesh's speech patterns?
Do you think @the_dragon's alterform is @Nagesh?
-
RE: Closed Poll: Shall @the_dragon consume @codinghorror?
Are you comparing yourself to a knight who is fighting a just-hatched baby dragon that hasn't even had the chance to hurt anybody yet?

Now why would you go and say that? Somebody is going to go like him now just to spite you.

RE: Notification sans link
Arantor, how the fuck do you like my post before it's even finished posting to the screen on my end you crazy fuck.
-
RE: Notification sans link
I aim to ruin everything, you're just one small stepping stone.

RE: Notification sans link
There's a space about   to the right of riking, he's just pulling your heartstrings.

RE: Poll: How do you use the forum software?
I actually read towards the bottom 1/3 of the screen as i'm scrolling with the mouse wheel, then read towards the middle if i stop / have to read a long post.
-
RE: (invalid title)
Oh, apparently if somebody likes your post there's a 1px(ish) space you can click on to actually pop in to the topic. Nifty.
[Edit] But it REALLY changes what the like system means, when all you see is '♥ Riking' or '♥ Arantor'
I just don't know guys, I don't feel the same.

RE: Empty Catch Blocks
facepalm
So much for calling .Close(), .Dispose() then. (Though to be fair, I use using(...){} wherever possible)
That seems a bit wonky when so many other things explicitly requiring .dispose()
-
RE: Empty Catch Blocks
Granted, but they've already determined (per the annotation) that the stream is closed. I feel like there's a fairly big difference between a closed object and a disposed one. (Unless it's a closed object with a null value, in which case GC could easily turn that into a disposed object, which is what I was wondering happened here.)
-
RE: Empty Catch Blocks
That link is crazy,
They open a memory stream
Close it (not dispose)
Try to read from it
Catch an 'object disposed' exception block
And the annotation specifically states the return error message is 'Cannot access a closed Stream.'Why is a closed stream filed under a disposed object in this instance? Is it just because of how they accessed the original stream, or is this across the board?
I'd expect an error more along the lines of a 'StreamClosedException' / 'StreamReaderException' (or maybe 'endofstreamexception'/'constraintexception'/'indexoutofrange', though each has it's own issues in this context)
Anybody have more info on why they chose object disposed?
-
RE: Empty Catch Blocks
Only if you use the following comment:
//Omnomnom
...
On a more serious note, I sometimes use them when I'm using tasks/threadpools that have a potential to fail, but I don't want the issue bubbling up if there's a problem (usually for long polling tasks, that sometimes have items that no longer exist or a database hiccup, or whatever. The issue is non fatal and usually self healing, but can throw a large number of exceptions due to the type of polling it's doing) -
RE: There's a meta question if ever I saw one
I liked Jeff to start, until he continually posted images with no content with the sole intent to be a dbag to several people who complained about his original image.

RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
Search is still in never land, at least on mobile. I'll check desktop later.

Chrome, unsure of version as it was my work pc

RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
On an unrelated note, the topic title is not matching the expected post style, which I feel still applies to what we've been talking about. So ultimately I win.

RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
As an addon to this, if I stumble in through a hot link, if that link is dead I immediately leave, always.
If I'm Google searching, I've probably found related links from the same site.
Also, I'd appreciate you at least acknowledging that your pictures aren't OK, and I provided a reason why I'm so annoyed when talking to you.
If I hadn't been driving home, I would have corrected arantor about the search, because I did see it there. But your search is search Google, not the site according to the button.

RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
Here, we say 'your feedback sucks because' to which we can take it or leave it, but @abarker nailed my underlying complaint, you're 404 page was middle of the road. His response is above.
-
RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
Maybe you misunderstood my reaction. So let me clarify. I fucking hate that image, and am actually offended by that whole series of responses and by bringing here it really pisses me off.
-
RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
I'd like to point out that @abarker 's response was to this post, to me at an attempt to comfort my woes:

RE: There's a meta question if ever I saw one
Do you have filters on 'time spent reading posts' so things that are multi thousand post topic aren't going to your read counter as you're fast scrolling through the topic?
Legitimate question about what your software does.
-
RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
It's a community of trolls, yes.
But my topic wasn't made to troll you, and neither were my responses. Don't use @error as your justification to piss all over my complaints when I'm trying to report something I see as an issue.
Or, my original TL;DR [ninja edit]
Or, TL;DR: The difference is in presentation. They clearly want you to use the search command, it's the only command on screen, and they give you a reason why you have to do it.
You offer 'You can do these things (which is a standard feature of what we offer) or you can search' - but you don't present it in the same fashion as you have on the rest of the site.
-
RE: Topic not found doesn't match expected post style
It's part of our jobs as a developer to interpret what people are trying to complain about.
I will grant you that my prescribed solution isn't optimal, fine. But there wasn't a recommendation of anything else, and I was proposing what would make sense to me
I agree with the minimalist style. In fact, I think the current usage would be fine if you removed all of the recent topic stuff.

RE: There's a meta question if ever I saw one
What you're failing at, significantly, is realizing this community it made up of people with vastly different communication styles. You haven't been around long enough to associate the correct level of response to your target.
Talking to @morbiuswilters requires a special level of snark,
Talking to @Matches when he's reported a bug to you requires normal human being communication
Talking to @cartman82 requires loving backhanded compliments due to his severe case of discourse syndrome.
When you mix and match these styles, you get negative reactions from all. On this forum, we accept jerks. We like jerks. We like sarcasm. We don't like lolcats when we're trying to have a serious topic about issues we've had with your software.
You have a unique position, you've come to our community after your software was installed. As such, our take on you is generally as software owner first, community member second. When you fail to respond appropriately to topics about your software, and in general topics about random things involving the community, it leads to an overabundance of rejection of who you are and what you represent.
