The memory on the graphics card does count to the 4 GB limit of 32 operating systems, I know that much.If you spent $900 on a video card then the 32 bit 4 GB limit probably isn't an issue, since you're probably using one of these and some of these.The last video card I bought cost $59.
Wait, you bought a video card? Don't they just, like, glue them onto motherboards or something?

0 rows returnedWhy would clue be an integer?
"a clue" can be an atomic unit. Alternatively, it could be a float, but clue > 0 and clue > 0.0 are the same. I don't know if it is signed or not, but people without a clue, and people with less than no clue are treated the same.
@Matt Westwood said:
What would that represent? Seems like poor database design. Should probably be something more like
SELECT u.* FROM users AS u INNER JOIN user_clue_lnk AS uc ON u.user_id = uc.user_id WHERE COUNT(uc.*) > 0
Sheesh, doesn't anyone care about normalization?
* makes normalized Baby Jesus cry. Also, COUNT goes in a Having clause.
Also, also, if you do an INNER JOIN, then your COUNT is completely redundant. If a user isn't in the user_clue_lnk, then they'll be eliminated by the INNER JOIN
Futher, just couting the number of records in the Clue Link table probably won't help, since they may in turn contain either a zero-value clue, or a postive-negative pair that cancel each other out.
SELECT u.*
FROM users AS u
INNER JOIN user_clue_lnk AS uc ON u.user_id = uc.user_id
-- OR
SELECT u.*
FROM users u
INNER JOIN
(
SELECT uc.id
FROM user_clue_lnk AS uc
HAVING SUM(uc.clue_value) > 0
GROUP BY uc.id
) uc
Looks like there's about 2000 records in the table, so that isn't so bad.
One of the design features is a single textbox. I'm doing a Google-esque "search as you type" ajax-thing for clients by name. I could do all sorts of funky string maniuplation based on spaces, I suppose.
I'll field test the current approach, and read up on full-text indexing.
Thanks, Alex.
@Alex Papadimoulis said:
If you don't care about indexing (a table scan isn't that bad if there aren't a lot of rows and not a lot of searching), then the approach you took is fine.
Otherwise, you may want to consider full-text indexing, as it will automatically handle situations like this (though your queries will become different). There are some other options too, but those also involve some table changes, etc.
A simple thing to do would be to split input on ' ', and have @input_first and @input_last. Your query would then become
set @input_first = (everything to the left of the first space)
set @input_last = (everything to the right of the first space, or if null then @input_first)
SELECT *
FROM e_clients
WHERE
first_name like @input_first
OR last_name like @input_last
What sort of index should I be looking at if I want to search a DB in the following manner:
@code said:
DECLARE @input varchar(255)
SET @input = ? -- Stored procedure. Will often pass in 'a%'SELECT *
FROM e_clients
WHERE
first_name like @input
OR last_name like @input
OR (first_name + ' ' + last_name like @input) -- This is the hitch
And index on first_name and an index on last_name is simple enough. But what should I do for the "full name" search?
To clarify,
If I enter "L" I should get Lorne Kates
If I enter "K" I should get Lorne Kates
If I enter "Lorne K" I should get Lorne Kates

I have the same problem. I found a relatively happy solution, however. I write shitty business apps by day, and hack on games all night.
i am very addicted to cinema watching. so i fulfill that hobby all my free time.

Yup. Putting aside the fact that I have DSL, I'll always have a landline until cell service will work 100% in a days long blackout emergency.
Which is never, since I can't remember to keep my cell charged 100% reliably. Stupid 3 day batteries.

Game programming is exactly the same, except with the additional headaches of drawing pictures.
If you get in with a game studio, you do crap menial work for ungodly hours every day until you are sick of it (or are fired).
If you are indie, it's publish or die-- so you do crap, menial work for ungodly hours every day until you are sick of it (or are bought out).
Canada with Virgin pay-as-you-go. I buy a $100 card once a year, and I think it's $0.30 / minute. Unused minutes bank and carry over.
I use the phone only for emergency/running late calls. I don't answer it, or check the voice mail. The only time I ever had to top up the minutes was when we were buying our house, and I had to be in contact all the time with real estate agent, lawyer, home inspector, etc.
I had too many friends in high-school / college who get into fuckloads of cellphone debt. That, combined with how generally used-car salesman slimey cell companies are-- and, well, I just have no desire to dump hundreds to thousands of dollars per year into it.
Sometimes I wonder if it would be neat to have a smart phone. Then I realize I waste enough time on the Internet as it is.

In any case, the post in question contained about three metric miles of style attributes in span tags, prefixed with apple-something. It looked like all that extraneous word-html, but a bit cleaner.
So, maybe you're using some sort of tool to write your post and then paste it into CS, safeguarding it for CS's quirks?
CS auto-transfers all posted comments directly to the iPods of specially seleted mods, where they listen to a text-to-speech of it. They then either nod sagely and approvingly, or shake their heads violently and froth. The iPod's accelerometer detects the motion, and either approves the post or rejects it. I'm pretty sure a new shiny, awesome new firmware just got pushed to iPods, and they must have changed everything by enhancing moderated posts with sleek style tags.

CSS has the X coordinates growing right and Y coordinates growing down, which defines a left-handed coordinate system.
Edit: Well, it could be right-handed as well, if the Z axis points into the screen. Similarly the X right / Y up one could be left-handed. The hand mnemonic doesn't really make a lot of sense with 2D coordinate systems.
The layers with a larger z-index are in front of the ones with smaller z-index, so I would say the CSS represents a left handed coordinate system.
Unless you tear off a finger and float it back onto your palm. Then your fingers appear in the order which you glued them back on.

Ok, I know I'm guilty of pasting from Word into an HTML textbox. I've done it on some featured articles. Heck, even here, there's that nice Paste[W] button in the forum editor.
I just got a support email from a client. She pasted a small amount of text into a textbox that has a 4000 character limit, and the result was blank. I looked at the database, and saw 4000 characters of word junk. That seems like a lot, so I pasted 1 bolded character into an empty HTML editor, went to view source, and saw this.
It is 17,670 characters. You can remove every single one, and still have the text work properly:

It's just CS's version of the Twitter bug. That's his account, but someone else's posts. deruler's, I think.

OP was a scam. If you got fooled by it, email me your bank details and I'll initiate WTF Forum Admin (0FFICIAL!) refund for you with additional holdings intrest of plus ten point six (9.7%) percent.

@blakeyrat said:I think you missed the part where this is someone *else's* tweets.I didn't miss that. I just didn't find it interesting enough to comment about. So I thought what else could I do with this, hoping to find something that might help to derail the topic. Then I saw that guy with a really awfully looking orange skin and for a second thought about posting his avatar here, 5 times larger, with a stupid and childish comment next to it. Then I was curious what his tweet read and, interestingly enough, I could actually read it and understood what it said. So I thought if I post about that here, people would think I'm smart. And now you think I accidentally your point, which saddens me.
Or you could go through his tweets and try to find something to harp on.
(I would, but I think I have twitter on an adblock list or something)

As far as I remember, OS4 did not have a native browser.
At least, not 4.0 on the 500-series. The 700-series were Web enabled, IIRC, but weren't they running 4.2?Oh yeah, there were the "Palm Query Apps" on Palm VII series... they used in'net, I think, but you needed a separate program to retrieve a specific bit of data and display it. At least, that's how I always understood this worked.
Did you try editing the article, removing all the <div> tags, adding some weird whitespace, then hope&pray the main page's "summary" view doesn't choke on it's own digestive enzymes?

Like there's more than one browser in existence. Ha.
Same issue with FF 3.6.12...
Did you try the native browser in Palm OS4?

You should pop the stack and flush the queue every now and then-- helps you focus.

But that would imply you doing their work and no whipping so... I stand by my choice
How abot if you ask them to forward you the email they originally received-- but ask them WITH A WHIP!

I have seen quite a few examples of how to validate dates over the years. A lot of them on this site. However, I have a new favorite. <font size="2" face="Lucida Console">
public void validateDate() throws Exception {
System.out.println(">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<");
}
</font> Yes, this is running in production.
I don't even see the opening and closing brackets.
I see January, and 03/07/2007, and 634372097997227500

The greasy wheel squeaks when it prematurely ejaculates

Its still a WTF for making a screenshot from a website and posting that instead of providing a link, what's with that recently?...
Maybe because (though not always):
- Original site site paywalled / password protected / private
- Original site is full of flashing crap you don't want/need to be subjected to
- OP doesn't want to reward crap site with more traffic
- WTF is single line buried amongst wall-of-text, screenshot allows highlighting
- WTF is fixed by site owners, while screenshot is immutable
- Site is down, dead, or otherwise unavailable
- Compression artifact jokes
Of course, screenshots or link isn't a binary option. Anyone can provide both.
