This is most worthy:
TL;DR If you remove the white line traffic slows down by 8% because drivers become more attentive and do not have the sense of security lane identification brings.
The strongest argument for keeping the white line? Cars with lane crossing stuff needs them.
On the plus side, so there is some hope, there are no plans to extend the scheme
This reminds me of the joke about proving spiders hear through their legs.
What makes it worse, in poor or atrocious visibility, speed will reduce dramatically thus reducing further the risk of accident. Yet more proof that it works.
Story: I used to live in a county called Cambridgeshire and work in a county called Suffolk (the only difference between Norfolk and Suffolk is the N and the S, and house prices are higher in Suffolk - proximity to London). At the time there were very few major major "A" roads through Suffolk - you could reasonably count them on the thumbs of two hands (one if you were a native of Suffolk). Except for a large number of "C" roads and one or 2 "D", the rest were "B" roads some of which are labeled as "A" for the look of things - but that's another story.
Once you got out of the bright light [sic] of built up areas - farm, pub, post office and half a dozen houses, there were no road markings except at major junctions. Driving home in the dark was a nightmare because the roads were often the same colour as the verges. Driving home in rain, fog or snow was a 1000 times worse.
The point of the story? As soon as I crossed the County Border you got white lines. Sometimes down the middle of the road, but always at the side. The best thing about the latter was they became dashed when you approached a side junction. And yes I did speed up, soon exceeded my previous rate of progress that was slightly less than walking pace.
INB4: Headlights were not as bright then as theysome are now and even one oncoming car was enough to wipe out whatever night vision you had. On some occasions it was easier to drive without lights
