To be fair, you could just credit the picture manually with a link after posting it. Would be more work but at least you would feel like you did the right thing.

Doesn't that fall under personal use or something?
I am really unsure. For example I am able to buy a DVD and watch the movie inprinted on it but am not allowed to show it publicly.
That might be a completely different field but that is how I (a non law-person) would compare it to (and the forum would be the piblic broadcast).
So clarification on that would be great.
Filed Under: This Topic has peaked my interest
Some people here would gladly wear some stupid looking VR-helmet if that would change the Discourse-forum to the old CS-style.
My point: some people see things in different priorities... and some of those are stupid :D
And just imagne you looking at your plane-food and seeing something you can actually eat!
I also love the idea of reading bedtime-stories to your kids from the plane. because that is totally not obnoxious to everybody else without stupid VR-helmes, amirite?
Filed Under: better use VR to filter out certain posts!!
On an unrelated note, what is up with the wall of preview-text on this topic:
Filed Under: Let's derail this topic to preview-texts being TRWTF | Also, always have > 100 unread posts when taking screenshots! It adds plausibility
As I see it you still track internally where I am on the website so I am going to notice that disabling History-Spam (in combination with Infinite-Scrolling) breaks the behaviour of the Refresh (F5)
This is a problem on most infinite-scrolling systems but I thought I might as well compose this message.
Bug: Refreshing sets you back to the post you entered the topic through
Expected Behaviour: For a while now browsers were able to keep your position on a website without spamming your history. Refreshing the topic should at least put me close to where I was reading.
Actual Behaviour: Pressing F5 halfway through reading a >100 Post topic breaks my flow of reading and is a barrier or something
Misc: Tested on Firefox 30.0 on Windows 8.1
Filed under: I know I could just turn history spamming back on... but seriously? | If this was already filed under a different topic I apologize | Actually, I don't!
I made my modifications but my javascript is rusty and I can't be bothered to look up the functions I most likely screwed up. Can anybody fix it:
// ==UserScript==
// @name TDWTF signatures
// @namespace TDWTF
// @include http://what.thedailywtf.com/*
// @version 1
// @grant none
// ==/UserScript==
document.addEventListener('mousedown', function (event) {
// Trigger only on "Reply" button in submit-panel
if(event.target.className.indexOf('create') > -1 && event.target.parentNode.className.indexOf('submit-panel') > -1)
{
var postInputArea = document.getElementById('wmd-input');
var postText = postInputArea.value;
// Check if signature has already been appended
if (postText.indexOf('Filed Under:') == -1)
{
var tagstring = "";
var tags = new array();
prompt("add Tags (split with | ):", tagstring);
tags = tagstring.split('|');
tagstring = "Filed Under:";
for(i = 0; i<tags.size(); i++){
tagstring += ' [' + tags[i] + '](#tag) |';
}
tagstring = substr(tagstring, -1); // Remove last |
// Append the Tags
postInputArea.value += '\n\r\n\r<hr />' + tagstring;
}
}
});```
Because who needs signatures if you can just add tags to everything :smiley:
Also: I want this as a plugin for Discourse (with an option in settings to turn it on and off)
Also, please note my amazing reuse of tagstring. Thats totally well designed code, right?
Filed Under: [did JS have foreach?](#tag) | [\[code\]\[/code\] do nothing T_T](#tag)
As far as I know, I would not even be allowed to vote in England. So that would undo that step immediatly!
Filed Under: Now you can't blame me if any weird party in England rises to power!
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/how-do-you-know-if-your-forum-software-is-trwtf/827/22 states that you are level 1 pretty fast :D I think it's actually even called basic user. Whatever it is, you should have passed it already.
Filed Under: Maybe showing the usertrustlevel next to the basic-user-thing could be a thing?
Continuing the discussion from Poll: Do no evil:
Since nobody replied to that post, I assume there is currently no way for one to delete a vote on a poll. I would request this feature as I accidentally clicked on a poll that now has at least one entry that was not designed to be there.
Changing votes seems fine, so maybe reclicking the selected option should unvote?
Filed Under: Still can't find another request for this but sometimes those are burried pretty deep in conversations :D
The Logo actually always brings me to the "Latest"-view. My suggestion should obviously also work for all the other buttons, too. (I think you understood that, but just to be save)
Filed Under: #Tags
I accidentally clicked on the poll and now my (random) vote is in the system. Is there a way to remove your vote from the poll (I can change my vote just fine, so it seems like unvoting should be a piece of cake!)
Maybe a Button that I don't know of?
Filed Under: This is totally the right topic to ask this! | Maybe I am using polls wrong, too
I don't really know how to phrase it differently nor how to search for it in case somebody else mentioned it, but:
FeatureRequest: Clicking on the Navigation that opens the current view does not reload the current view
For example clicking on "Latest" here does not update the Topics I am seeing. I have to press F5 for that to happen.
This disturbes my workflow or something... not really but it is really confusing. I know I can press F5 and I think it auto-refreshes every 15 minutes or something (didn't check) but I really think clicking that field should give me the same view as clicking another of those buttons and then clicking this one again
Filed Under: I am TRWTF for having 11 new topics and 45 unread posts! And I don't even feel bad about it!
is this PHP?
Because if it was then even if I ignore the obvious WTF (and the str_pad-Function) I would still not understand why the keys are numerated! It does that on it's own!
Oh Wait, it would start at 0... wich begs the question (not really) why the 0 is left out!

Filed Under: This should have been obvious! And it even fits some of the mindset of some of the people here!! | We should stop this metaphor-talk, though, because it derails the thread even more :D
Take 10 truck drivers and give them a VW Beatle, what are they going to talk about?
Football? (Or maybe Soccer if outsite of the US (it is world-cup after all!) )

Cue the infighting of the community.
From how I read it, Boomzilla accepts the workflow of Discourse (and that is his good right to do). He also dislikes the way some people voice their complaints about Discourse (still his good right) and as far as I know he didn't really say, that there was only one way of doing things.
Just please don't add more Drama here than I would expect from stupid youtube-comments! This community might be the worst of the worst but that would be even worse!
I think it's fine for everybody to express their concern with Discourse. Politely would be preferred but heck, sometimes people get the feeling that doesn't work and resort to more drastic measures.
TL;DR: @boomzilla likes Discourse and thats fine and @abarker doesn't like Discourse and that is also fine. If you really want to voice that, create your own topics, guys! This one belongs to @Lorne_Kates !
Filed Under: Sometimes you guys behave like 12y olds... are you guys really developers / other professionals? :D

I seem to remember the devs saying that IE9 is just barely supported and you should upgrade (or use something that is not IE :D) Don't hold your breath on them fixing any IE9 issue that is not critical, though.
Filed Under: Too lazy to look for that post
If I could do that, wouldn't it be smarter to just program a plugin for Discourse, send it to apapadimoulis and wait until he includes it? He said, he'd include everything
Filed Under: Not that I'd ever seen RoR-code outside of TDWTF
that makes sense, but it's just the easier way of visualizing it. The way I actually found out was by not having Firefox at Fullscreen but tagged to the side (so more like a halfscreen maybe). That way I can actually do stuff while browsing.
Since you do already have a mobile version (apparently) and as far as I remember there are these weird CSS-conditions for window-width I just thought I'd mention this.
It's not game breaking but I think it's worth looking into.
Especially with the BonusBonus of it sometimes doing the right thing (also srolling the header)
Filed Under: Minor Bugs also have the right to be discovered!
It's actually the same thing with youtube! Recently designers apparently stopped thinking about people who use zoomlevels in browsers.
Reproduction: Use Firefox (TRWTF) -> go to what.thedailywtf.com -> press Ctrl + "+" a whole lot -> try to change your preferences.
You can also just make your browser-window smaller.
Expected Result: The scrollbar at the bottom should be able to also scroll the Header (ember982)
Actual Result: Header is not scrollable and content is pushed out of bounds.
Bonus: If you press Ctrl + "+" too often you can't even minimize the reply. But that would be an edgecase could overlook, really!
BonusBonus: It actually scrolls on this tab if I hide the "Create a Topic"-dialog. It does not on the other tab with the main-forum-view open!
Yeah, that would at least confuse me less than having too identical looking buttons do different things depending on context.
No, I liked it because I liked the first post. It is a whole giant in-depth essay about the pros and cons of Discourse that @Lorne_Kates took a long time to write.
If that is the case I appologize for my accusation. It just appeared that way to me.
You should let google handle your bookmarks, too
Filed Under: This Post was written in a world where Chrome does not exist!
I can see that but per button your are giving me the exact same option with the first post as with all the other posts. The [← Reply]-Option.
It just behaves completely different from every other of these options. That is: it mimicks the [+Reply]-Option from the bottom of the page. This is very confusing the first few posts.
I mean, it might have just been me, but I replied to a first post and wondered where the reply-thing was. I even tried to edit my post (but I don't even know if you can later add a relation to a previous post). Only after reclicking that reply-button and looking at the "Replying to"-Section over the input-field was I sure I didn't do anything wrong.
To me it just seems backwards that the same button does different things depending on on what post it stands. And also that there already is a capable button for that scenario. Maybe just change the reply-button on the first post to the one from the bottom to make it more visible?
Filed Under: Discoverability and stuff!
I would accept no signature if there was an easy "add stupid tags nobody needs"-field somewhere in the reply-box
Because that is how signatures on TDWTF are usually handled anyway!
Your browser also has a search function! Guess what Discourse does to that! :D
Filed Under: Nope, your "Filed under" - field was too long!
What happens if I start an image at position 295? I don't wanna count and test it out, but if you are able to filter out images then you should not have problems with other tags either, right?
Maybe it's a desperate cry for help? @apapadimoulis might have trapped him in some kind of basement to code for TDWTF and with his mouse he can't reach the but only the icon!
Sidenote: Did anybody in here (except the admins) use bookmarks, yet? Tell us your thoughts about them in 10 words or less!
Usually the things you inbox are actually relevant to what you stated. Now I know that something about google+ and Gmail is happening and stuff... but there is no mention of Signatures anywhere. You should have used a Post where people were singing and dancing for getting Signatures!!!
0/10 try again next time
Filed Under: Always typing "Filed Under: " and using the brackets is so hard!
I wanted to reply with "WhyWasIBanned.com" but that site went out of business a while ago.
You might find it with some internettimemashine or whatever you fancy. It was basically a site about people complaining about being banned from XBox-Live after breaking the rules ~10000 times. It was almost as hillarious as this but with the added bonus of whining.
Your post made me think of this!

Filed under: Let's derail this topic even more! The Original Topic doesn't work anymore anyway!
If only you guys had the ability to remove picture from posts or something like that (looking at that other topic I replied to :D)
Actually there are boards out there, that allow signatures that only show on the first / last post on said page (in this case topic) AND if you save them sepearatly you might even give users the options to turn them off.
This may sound like I care deeply for signatures when really I am just bored enough to defend random things on this board :D
Filed Under: Isn't this another one of these "Every Community has different requirements" type of things?
a) we don't have signatures ( )
b) the exploit has been fixed (with one minor exception)
c) Wouldn't that be illegal anyway? I don't think anybody here wants to create legal problems
d) Why am I using letters as bulletpoints? I dunno
e) You can be the first to find another exploit and try to put music in there, though
Filed under: The best plan apparently is to break things until they are shaped the way you want them to
I think it makes sense in case of images to not be shown but replaced with the [image] size -tag. And I assumed that Smileys / Emoticons / Emojis / Whatever they are called could be viewed as a subset of pictures. Hence they get the special treatment of being removed. Thats just my take on it, though.
Filed under: Maybe you can interpret it as a Text (and Links) only representation
When you click on the light blue "reply" button below a message, you reply to a certain message. That gives you the little icon for others to jump to said post.
This does not happen if the post you reply to is the first post wich might make it confusing if the general discussion in the topic slightly varies from the topictitle but you still want to reply to something in the opening statement
Reproduction: Try replying to this specific post (don't quote it, just hit reply)
Expected Result: You get a small thumbnail of my already small avatar on top of your post that is a link to get to my post
Actual Result: The same thing as hitting "+ Reply" at the bottom of the thread happens and you can't see the direct post you replied to.
Suggested Fix: Make the Opening-Reply behave the same way as every other reply.
This is obviously a design-choice... but I hope you can understand why it would be confusing

And don't forget, it's never too late to just switch back to CS, re-evaluate and try again in a few months with much better product (either something different, or a TDWTF-ready Discourse as above).Until then, I may accidentally come back to check on this topic out of habit, but I'm done. To anyone reading this, if things change for the better, please drop me a line at lkates@gmail.com and let me know.
I think I read every post you wrote about this topic and I can completely understand where you are coming from. It's not that big of a problem for me but to somebody who has been active as long as you have this could truly look terrible.
That said, I would be sad if you left. I am already sad I am most likely not going to experience other people I have read a lot from live and in colour.
The Community is what makes a Community and pillar-stones leaving does not only hurt the people you want to hurt (in this case everybody who does not listen to your pleas) but also the other users who would like to talk about WTFs with you.
I am not going to stop you, nor can I influence how things roll here but I at least make an honest attempt at stopping you and playing around with the bugs in this software (like you guys did with CS) (You missed the whole "HTML including scripts in titles"-bug that was fixed today! It was awesome while it lasted!)
So yeah... said what I wanted to say... still don't know how to end posts in a normal fashion! (Signatures might fix that :D)
I am pretty sure you are using your "likes" to mark stuff to look at again later but
at a post that is basically "Don't use Discourse" this looks pretty mean spirited.
Also I thought @Sam or you said somebody was working on pagination for next week... but I can't seem to find it (not yet fully understanding the search-function -> can I search for "pagination" only in @Sam s posts?), so maybe I just read wrong.
Maybe I didn't make entirely clear what I meant... Wich is: CS as I have come to experience is (wich is by lurking in this forum) made abuse like that possible. Wich obviously was one of the reasons to switch to something saner.
Only that this "saner" solution also allowed the same thing
I could see how you would misinterpret my statement, though and blame my amazing ability to not express what I wanna express! (also English not being my main language)
the original bug with the sidebar is still happening:
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/sidebarwtfs-are-not-sanitized-for-mainpage/887/
Or does the fix not affect already posted posts? or does it sanitize on view?
I wanna thank @codinghorror and @sam to make this possible! We could have never done it without them!
Still hating you so much (but maybe a little less :D)
Make it stop, please! T_T I like to keep this tab open
wow, you can't even stop it because pressing the pause-button activates the link!
I hate you so much right now :D
I find it also pretty alarming that none of the other communities that use this software ever found this?
It seems like something spammers would just have a fieldday with.
I just wrote a paragraph here that explained pretty site-breaking things with and addendum to not do it but took it out because I felt like giving ideas to people ...but since everybody in here is an IT-person I guess I can't be the only one to be able to add 1 + 1 together
People, be reasonable
@codinghorror Can't you for a while just strip all tags from Titles until a real fix is out? This does seem like something CS would have made possible
Filed under: @subscript_error is apaarently not reasonable
It makes you wonder about the E-mail-service. Since I usually deactivate all HTML in E-Mails checked the "don't send me mail"-box. I don't know how scripts are handled in those situations! Somebody should look into that, too!
