I've not heard of any of these books so far...excellent!

Requesting good books for my summer vacation.
Any one have a must read technology book they would like to share...doesn't have to be a programming language book...Maybe some technology classic (fiction or nonfiction. Haha...or true crime.)
Difficulty level: it has to be interesting (subjective) and you can only post a single title.
I have read: Don't make me think. So you can skip that one.
I have been reading financial books for 8 years and I am pretty damn sick of them.
So if you had only one book to offer me, what would it be?

RE: Anybody have experience with proxies?
I'm un-social engineering you to freedom of the internets and the power of CTRL-F...go now and search, search away....!
-
RE: Anybody have experience with proxies?
Here is a configuration guide (all in one page)...you can use CTRL-F and search around for answers.
and on the frontPage second section is 'popular topics'...It may give you some ideas as well.
-
RE: Anybody have experience with proxies?
I (me) used squid proxy as a reverse proxy solution.
I'm not telling you to do that.
You can use it for request forwarding or anonymizing or whatever your particular proxy situation might be.
-
RE: Anybody have experience with proxies?
I have experience with Squid Proxy
I use it for reverse proxies (many requests <> proxy <> server).
but I think it would work for you.

Hope this helps.

RE: Poll: It's the fourth (eleventh or whatever) of July...
Pfft....that is implied. ;)

RE: Poll: It's the fourth (eleventh or whatever) of July...
Of course we have the date. It's my niece's birthday, and you can't get more important than that if you've just turned four.
My son's birthday is the 3rd so we have all the party then. Besides, it's not that meaningful in Australia...
You guys and your subtle globally nuanced ways. It's a good thing I am here to remind you of 'American chinese pyrotechnic consumption day' for 'freedoms' and 'liberties'. My box of explosives was massive.
Like my dong.

RE: Continuing a topic on admin layout on mobile
Nope. Get V1 out.
Yes..this is more for meta.d but I can speak a little more freely here about stuff and since someone mentioned it I thought it would be worth discussing. No expectations (it's functional just not pretty on mobile) making it a nice to have not a need to have.
We can close this convo.

RE: Cannot be changed in any way - archiving
Bitcointalk should be Discourse's next target. That site is disgusting. And while you are at it talk to the Litecointalk.org folks. These two parties work pretty closely on changes to wallets security and general patches. Discourse would make an awesome fit for both.
You should also talk to Charlie Lee @ coinbase ((coblee) on either of those shitty forums) about this. He has some influence on the community and he is very approachable on stuff.
He would approve of 'anything' that would invigorate the cryptocoin people.

Continuing a topic on admin layout on mobile
@pjh mentioned in a prior topic in the middle of a diatribe of other things...
Problem:
The admin layout is not mobile friendly (this might be a huge PITA request but).Recommendation:
I wonder if @codinghorror @sam and @awesomerobot can hamburger-fy the primary admin nav then the secondary nav mimics the mobile user profile layout so secondary nav turns into horizontal bars with active states and then normalize the form stuff to be full wide horizontal-ish inputs/textareas and other form elements below the selected section..Again this could be bullshit to deal with right now but I too use the admin section in a mobile environment frequently.

RE: Badge suggestions - ones with added thought
Just remember at the end of the day, whatever changes you make will either make us:
- raging mad
- disgusted and appalled
- mildly irritated
Good feelings? No. Silence is what you get when you did the right thing.

RE: XML, SQL, PHP and it's mine (sorry, long)
I am less dumb these days. I am glad other people on this planet can admit the same.

RE: What was your absolute worst day in IT
Something about your post reminded me of this terrible and deadly WTF moment with the Therac-25 chemotherapy machine.
Many here might be privy but I will post the link anyways.

Yea that was a hardcore WTF moment which segwayed into damage control and then segwayed into fear for my life.

Or as Romney tweeted 'Amercia' .So that would make us: Amercians

RE: HTML tag abuse thread
Discourse just rolled me back to post 108 after I submitted my last post...that was disorientation +1
-
RE: HTML tag abuse thread
Not working...just some light and fluffy trolling for fun and profit.
-
RE: HTML tag abuse thread
I mean... my browser at work is blocking images of all cats. They are sticklers about such things.
-
RE: HTML tag abuse thread
I have some stuff that'll fix that but you won't be very good at conversations. Or alt-tabbing to TDWTF because you'll be un-distract-able.
-
RE: HTML tag abuse thread
@matches can't get teh youtubes either. (Shhhh) I think he might be in federal prison library or something.
He might be alt-tabbing between the only to thing he has access to: One. His inmate pen pal application, Two. His online King James version bible (single page...all loaded to the DOM so he can use ctrl-f for searching). And three. TDWTF with hijacked enhanced search functionalities. The guards are not privy to the latter...Yet.

Ha, listen to you :)
You should have concluded your post with:

RE: Poll: Blacklisted for Driverless Cars
I know a few things about chemistry.
In my life I have probably made a blue chemical drum full of Nitric Acid (100s of small batches at a time). I use sodium nitrate, copper, water, and hydrogen peroxide. I use aluminum foil as an accelerant in this process.
Tada! That's it.
Well not really, I know a few other things but wish I knew more.

RE: XML, SQL, PHP and it's mine (sorry, long)
Even though it was a time sink I bet you learned a fuck ton of stuff. I bet if you open that code base today it would give you shivers.
I was also in the grouping of teach yourself programming and programmed for years alone. Wish I had a mentor or did some kind of apprenticeship back in those early days.
To Jeff's credit Stack Overflow improved me 1000%. But I am still learning...always learning.
Good story.

What was your absolute worst day in IT
As the title states and I'll start.
We all like to think we are bad-asses amazingly great at what we do but sometimes the worst moment are the most notable so I have decided to share one.
I've had shit days and if there is one that to this day scratches at the back of my mind the most was when I was doing Y2K conversions for Northop-Grumman. I was escorted into the Stealth Bomber IT facility to swap a hard drive.
I walked into a holding area where guy behind a glass window got my personal info my signature gave me a special badge then hit a switch. A series of red alarm lights (no sound) let everyone in the office know there was a gimp IT person in the facilities.
The guy lead my to the computer that I was to be working on. These were circa 1996 IBM desktop machines when all black systems started to hit the market. These machines had standard internals and I knew how to get to everything. They were essentially all clones.
So I'm going through my check list. This hard drive was preloaded with the operating system and tools the people needed. Just swap and go.
I get to where I am removing the case and looking through the chasis. There were two hard drives were there should have been only one (policy and obviously an exception to this policy).
So I was looking at how the drives were set up on the hard drive cable to see if I could determine the slave drive when there was a short, some smoke, the smell of tin and panic from me.
I decided to play it cool and get the hard drive in place and get the computer up and running which I did.
I tried to get to the two other hard drives figured out through the bios but this was when you had to configure settings and move jumpers to get things to talk. I couldn't get either to talk and I was essentially fucked.
I contacted the tech lead and explained what happened. He wanted me to talk to the user to see if there was anything critical on the second drive.
Guess what? There was very important shit on it. So important that my contract ended that day. Had a shitty exit interview, had to go to another building to have my badges inactivated then had to sit there and wait till my contract company sent a rep to escort me off the premises.
I replay that day sometimes in my head and when I do I think to myself: out of that list of 6 work orders on my tiny 15 inch CRT monitor...why on earth did I picked that one.
-
RE: TitIe has already been used
I noticed but was on other posts and forgot to come back to mentioned: No, titles can't be duped based on the check box (to allow or disallow) in the settings under the posting subsection.
Thanks for catching this.

RE: All your database are belong to discourse
...your doing it wrong.
https://meta.discourse.org/t/beginners-guide-to-deploy-discourse-on-digital-ocean-using-docker/12156
God embedding things in posts on Android is tough. There!
-
RE: All your database are belong to discourse
Why do that when DigitalOcean costs $10.00 a month. I mean besides the lulz and ability to pick up the phone to scream at someone about your inadequacies.
For me...I like pain. That's why I host my discourse site using the droplet docker method.
Chances are they do to.
In six weeks they'll start to get concerned and discover this oversight. Send them back to world of warcraft with no money to exhange for virtual in game items... that'll be a sore day... a red day for discoursehosting.com...oh well.

RE: Cannot be changed in any way - archiving
You forgot a monocle and some old national railroad maps so he can route his shock troopers (I mean ruby-programming umpa lumpas) through backwoods terrain effectively.
Well that's a day in the life of your garden variety startup of which (I did only once in my life).
Maybe they will make bank (or starve) depending on fate, luck and perseverance. I am leaning more towards bank, but the discourse wildfire needs to spread.
Thanks to @antiquarian for the term "garden variety" to enter my daily portfolio of fun things to say...
-
RE: Cannot be changed in any way - archiving
Well look on the brightside. Someday you will be on a yacht drinking crown and coke and sailing the Bass Strait to Tasmania.
Actually, my friend told me the waters there are fairly treacherous.
Just park the boat and drink crown and cokes...Nah, you'd probably be bored to death.
Keep doing your startup stuff, you and Jeff and your trout fish are really good at 'reinvigorating the internet of things'.
Oh, and thanks for the leadership badge on meta.discouse.org. That was a nice surprise (it's possible you had nothing to do with it and I got parceled via some thresold but thanks all the same).
-
RE: Cannot be changed in any way - archiving
So you mean to tell me that you three (Jeff and the trout fish) sometimes disagree and possibly bicker about features and how they should be implemented? I'm shocked.
I was under the impression that every day at Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, Inc. was like an amazing utopian bubble paradise with rivers made of chocolate and umpa lumpas harmonizing while coding ruby on rails and javascript.
No?

Setting up an LLLC is going to have to wait
LLLP (I knew what you meant though). Yes...fun and profit... then you can do this later.

RE: Badge suggestions - ones with added thought
My original criteria for sock puppet was like 10 posts in a row of 5-7 words or less.
@Luhmann would auto-qualify.
And I mean this in the nicest possible way.
He has a skill of saying more with less. That is a good skill to have.

RE: Badge suggestions - ones with added thought
+1 for over-thinking it into oblivion.

I'm going to analyze my list and see if I can render the list down to an acheiveable list. With a few outliers for fun and profit.
I can see these already being bronze badges.

- sock puppet
But need some requirements.

RE: I can only edit my post 30 times
Correct: ADHD and depression/anxiety. I get terrible anxiety.
The second one is a dopamine uptake inhibitor and I explain to people that it makes me smile more and cuss less and help with my panic attacks.

RE: I can only edit my post 30 times
My company knows if I haven't taken my 30 mg of Vyvanse and my 150 mg of bupropion, that not only am I to be avoided but also my coding goes all pear-shaped. I end up like the Carver in Silicon Valley.

Well in my case, I am just aggregating things in my main post. I'm not doing any exploiting stuff.
