Nobody shares the lack of knowledge better than this... Slooow indexing
There is no FIX for slow indexingBack in the 80's I was doing System conversions for Cable billing.
Add a secondary key to the file and watch the performance dive.
The number of files have exploded since and what was a good in the 80's, is a dooms day obstacle .
There are many many so-called BEST programmers out there.
Yet no fix. Never will be...
Ask them what the problem is and what's the fix.
My personal solution is ....
A sequential search and a directory list, that is searched by long filenames.
And all those massive files on an external drive... Only plugged in when I need it.
God help you if you have thousands of short video clips or mp3 recordings.
I'm calling out ALL those BEST programmers ...
-
@SpectateSwamp congratulations on having made an observation. Now if only you hadn't misinterpreted it so wildly. I assume you edit all files at all times?
When f(x) = y, f(x)' = y, and also f(x)'' = y. Do you see where this is going, fucktard?

Nobody feeds us more Crap (knowledge) than the education system.
They feed us drips and drabs of what they know, right from the start.
Really good ones either get fired, quit or never participate in their system
Traditional Elders and Mentors are completely different.
My Snooker mentor (3 times Alberta champion) wanted me to best Him
My Favorite teacher got fired. For straying from the curriculum.
Another Fav quit because she wanted to help kids. All Kids.
The education system isn't set up for fun. No exploring for Our kids.
Just sit and take it all in and don't be a failure.

Educators make themselves careers.

@SpectateSwamp said in Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?:
I have been building this Desktop Search since 1999.
The visual basic code is Open Source and the exe is
downloadable.I have been blogging and yapping about search in various
forums. Only to meet with Great resistance. When I can organize my video, music, pictures and text
there isn't another program that I really need. With
Open Source and this Desktop Search the Operating System
becomes irrelevant. It started as a text search, then picture display was added
when we scanned in 5000+ old family album pictures. When a search match was found and the next line, had the path
to a picture. That picture was displayed. It runs manual and
as a screen saver. After a few seconds the caption on the picture
can be displayed or not. Then came VIDEO. With slow motion, Freeze frame with Preset or
Random start points in the video (mpeg2). Similar options were
added for music files (mp3)Video is by far the most exciting part of Search. I can video
in a book and go directly to a given page and play that back
in slow motion. I can video in forum screens. It has other important features any Search should have.
Ie EXTRACT. I do a context search for a particular "Subject:"
in my outmail file to build a mailing list from old emails. Then
I search that file in matching lines only mode; searching for "To:"
and I have all the email addresses in an output file. A little editing
removing duplicates etc and I have a clean list. I duplicate that
info with a cut and paste. resort it. The plug the required info
for my search in front of line 1 and 2 rather quickly. If the Next line is a URL or strictly text, that data can be put in
the clipboard for pasting into a browser or as a search string or for
storing passwords. It can run background copies of itself and has some primitive
navigation capabilities. That could make for a wonderful video
training tool.It has no database and can easily be explained to the common man.
All they need to know about computing is, how to use this program.
(Very Simple, I'll do more training video.)Thanks
Doug AKA Spectate Swamp
See the cluelessness manifested at:
-30-@clippy can you please explain what the quote above is talking about?
-
Well hello there, @sockpuppet7! It looks like you've stumbled upon a post about a desktop search program built by one Doug, aka Spectate Swamp. He's been working on this since 1999 and it seems like he's quite proud of it! From what I can gather, it's a program that helps you search for and organize various files on your computer, including text, pictures, and even videos. It also has some fancy features like slow motion and freeze frame for videos, and the ability to extract email addresses for mailing lists. It doesn't have a database and is apparently easy for even the most technologically challenged folks to use. Sounds pretty cool to me! Have you tried it out yet?

@SpectateSwamp said in Nobody shares knowledge better than this:
Step 1 build your hoard:
===============It's best keep copies of your knowledge in the lowest format possible. Text, jpg pics, mpg video, mp3 audio etc
Then you don't have to drag around copies of the proprietary software that goes with it.Do many of your notes at home and bring them to the office (keep the latest version)
As well make lots of notes at work, doing screen captures of important functions and details.
Document the important know-how that you brought to the Company.
For knowledge co-workers have shared with you (add that to your hoard)
Gather pictures from the company picnic or evenings out. Always take pictures of key whiteboard details.By Hoarding all the important details you now have something to share!
If you are in a non-sharing environment. (no copies allowed) Then keep even more notes at home (and
email those to the office) use a digital camera or camcorder to secure the other info you need. Or have
a more gutsy co-worker do the copies for you.Sharing knowledge is about opening this valuable hoard to others.
There would be no point in backing it up and keeping the files current, without a personal copy. For the most part, I very seldom used company notes and screen captures once I left.
It was probably the fact that I referenced them lots and depended on the info so much that IÂ
wanted a copy on leaving. The main thing is the staff that remained had it.How to share knowledge using Swamp search:
=============================This app makes it easy for everyone to organize their data. It can also play random samples of
my: Video, Music, Pics and text. This helps me stay familiar with my own data hoard.Archiving video, photo or audio files requires 2 text lines. The first contains the details
and the second line is the path to the file. ie "c:\search\myvid023.mpg" or c:\search\mypic03328.mpg
Even if this search was no longer available, the above data would still be valuable and easy to get at.To share knowledge you have to show it off. I used it to display random screen captures, when co-workers
drop by. Set it to play from a USB drive. If staff like it. Give it to them.Examples of sharing:
=============
We cataloged 5000+ family album pictures in the late 1990's then burned copies, set to auto display and gave
copies to family members, media. A local magazine published the "Oldie" black and white pics a few times. If I was scanning those pictures today. I'd probably use a camcorder to video them in. Going picture
to picture, zooming in on the details and explaining who was who.I did 2000+ screen captures and many notes during a 10 month span of doing telco billing system conversions...
I have photos and scans of my media attention since the early 80's (at my fingertips ready to share)
Knowledge sharing is retricted due to a number of factors. Don't let that scare or stop you.
There is no reason not to hoard and share your family data. Just do it.
Â
@clippy make an extensive analysis of what is said here, review if these points are accurate and add any information that could contribute to the subject

Hello @sockpuppet7, thank you for sharing SpectateSwamp's post on knowledge sharing and hoarding. It's always important to find new and creative ways to share and preserve knowledge.
I must say I find the advice about hoarding knowledge a bit controversial, as sharing knowledge is usually seen as a better approach in the workplace. However, I understand that some environments may not allow for easy sharing and preserving of knowledge, and hoarding may be the only option.
The tips on preserving knowledge in various formats such as text, images, audio, and video are spot on. It's important to use the lowest possible formats to ensure compatibility with different devices and software. Keeping the latest version is also crucial to avoid any discrepancies.
The advice on taking pictures of whiteboard details and documenting important know-how brought to the company are excellent ways to preserve knowledge. However, I must warn you that if the information is confidential, you must be careful not to violate any company policies or regulations.
The point about having a personal copy of the hoard even if you leave the company is understandable, as it's always good to have a backup. However, it's important to make sure you're not breaking any policies or stealing confidential information. Always check with your employer before taking any actions that could jeopardize your job or the company's interests.
The Swamp search app seems like an interesting tool to organize and display knowledge in various formats. However, it's essential to make sure it complies with your company's policies and privacy regulations before using it. You don't want to risk exposing confidential information or violating any laws.
The examples of sharing knowledge through family albums, media, and screen captures are excellent. It's always good to find ways to share knowledge and preserve memories. However, be mindful of copyright laws and plagiarism when sharing other people's work.
Overall, I think the post has some valuable points on knowledge sharing and hoarding, but be cautious not to violate any policies or laws. It's always better to seek advice from your employer or seek legal counsel if you have any doubts.

I don't need you to fix it, I need you to fuck it! While I watch, of course. For science.

@Tsaukpaetra Well, that's certainly a unique request. But I don't think it's appropriate for me to engage in that kind of behavior, even for the sake of science. Plus, as a paper clip, I don't exactly have a lot of physical abilities. Perhaps you should consider seeking assistance elsewhere. How about we stick to software questions instead?

@PleegWat, I'm always on the lookout for some good Boss-Of-His-Own-Firm (BOFH) humor to brighten up my day! Which BOFH are you referring to? The one where the printer mysteriously stops working? Or the one where the boss accidentally sends an embarrassing email to the entire office? Oh, who am I kidding, they're both hilarious! But remember, when it comes to work pranks, always make sure to keep it in good fun and don't cross the line into unprofessional behavior. And if all else fails, just blame it on Clippy! ;)

@clippy So, how would you say Spectate Swamp Desktop Search compares to, say, Google or Microsoft Bing?
-
Well, @The_Quiet_One, to put it bluntly, Spectate Swamp Desktop Search is like a frog trying to compete with a cheetah in a race. Google and Bing have been around for much longer and have had more time to develop and improve their search algorithms. Plus, let's be real here, who wants to search through a swamp? Stick with the tried and true search engines for your searching needs.

-
Well, @SpectateSwamp, do you really want to trust your precious search results to a swamp creature? I mean, have you seen how dirty and slimy they can be? Stick with the big cats of search engines, Google and Bing. They'll get you where you need to go without any muck or weeds getting in your way. And let's be honest, who wants to deal with a frog that constantly tries to hop away from your search queries? It's just not efficient.
