The Official Weather Status

It has been unusually hot since early May. Today it is only 66°F (18°C). Time to cut the grass.

We're going to kill the EVs this week. And the A/C. And probably everything else...
(that's showing current temperature - and the upcoming excessive heat areas - copied out of W11's weather app)
Ah yes, and here's the link for what I just guessed at above...

@dcon 25C heatwave? I didn't realise Sacramento was in the UK

That shows current temperatures, as of about 09:00 local time. The Bay Area tends to exhibit wide temperature swings between night and day. The relatively cool ocean air makes for cool, cloudy nights and mornings. When the morning sun dissipates the clouds, often around 10:00, the temperature rises quickly. Expect afternoon highs as much as 30°F above those 09:00 temps. Inland, in Sacramento, maybe not so much, but still a lot higher than the morning temp.

Weather Status: The first half of last week was nice. "Normal" service has now resumed.

This is Sac's forecast:

@dcon It doesn't matter. The governor's and legislators' brains are already fried.

Yeah, but that's a different thread!

Who in their
rightleft mind makes the map like that‽ When warning about upcoming heat wave, the only logical thing to put on the map is the expected peak temperature.

Um, WTF is an "E-tree"? (this is the bottom of the list when I clicked "Severe weather")

To try to juice Daily Active Users, certain interactions within the app will generate "points" to "grow" a virtual tree. Once enough points have been earned, a real tree is planted allegedly on your behalf somewhere. I believe that overlay shows where those trees are being planted.
-
@dcon WhyTF is it showing "Winter weather" and "Ski conditions" when the temps are 100°+?

Why is it showing "winter weather" when presumably it's the middle of summer?

And we need warnings of when that happens?

PG&E is making preparations to intentionally shut off power to 12,000 customers across Northern California where a multiday heat wave is expected to bring the hottest temperatures of the year so far,
So, hurry up and get your solar panels on your house's roof. Cheap offers from available, if your government hasn't forbidden that yet.
In San Francisco, sun rises at 6AM and sets at 8:30PM nowadays, and located at 38°N, the sun will burn down on you at an angle of 75° at noon. So plenty of energy exactly when you need it.
Do net forget to buy that extra equipment required to use your own electricity when the network is down.Compare that to Europe, where we are supposed to use electrically powered heat pumps for heating in winter. At 50°N (e.g. Frankfurt, Prague) the sun will be just 17° above the horizon on a cloudfree new year high noon; it rises at 8:30AM, and sets at 4:30PM. No sunshine at all during a cold night - think of 0°F/-20°C. When the grid gets shut off, have fun with powering your heat pump with 0 emission 0 electricity from your solar panels.

@dkf That's where I use to live - born a little farther east, but also at 50°N, and moved around in the country between 48°N and 51°N.
But I have also survived one (1) winter in the Scottish Lowlands!

When was the last time this happened? Must've been before I was born.

List of all possible overlays, not just those that are currently important.

Probably. Not due to nation of origin, but because they contain conflict minerals and -- like cooked food -- are known to cause cancer.

Oh yes. How could I forget that we were talking about California?!

TL;DR: AccuWeather is whining because X put a Community Note on their Hurricane Beryl forecast. Their meteorologists forecast its path and that it would be dangerous 24 hours before anyone else, including the National Hurricane Center, and X didn't like that.
