What is a smart watch?
-
What is a smartwatch? And as a corollary, is a health tracker that happens to have a clock built into it a smart watch?
Asking only because, having read the months of community backlash about how there's apparently no dev kit for Versa 4 / Sense 2, and that the advertising materials for these products previously boasted "hundreds of apps" and yet no longer do, with no reduction in stated classification.
I'm all for scratching this off as "Fitbit being pounded into death per the Google Way, bau", but it seems kinda odd.

Also had this enlightening chat with Support...
19:37:50 System: Thanks for waiting. Please provide as many details as you can so we can get you back on track.
19:37:57 Agent: Alejandro B.: Hi, this is Alejandro from Fitbit customer support. How can I help you today?
19:38:15 Tsaukpaetra: Trying to find the App gallery in the Fitbit app on mobile, it seems it is missing?
19:38:48 Agent: Alejandro B.: Hi! I am more than glad to assist you today regarding your Fitbit app gallery that is missing.
19:38:50 Agent: Alejandro B.: thanks for the information.
19:38:58 Agent: Alejandro B.: Could you please confirm your country of residence?
19:39:06 Tsaukpaetra: USA
19:39:31 Agent: Alejandro B.: Thanks for confirming
19:39:54 Agent: Alejandro B.: Just to be sure, when you are in the Fitbit app
19:40:16 Agent: Alejandro B.: and tap your profile picture or avatar icon at the upper left of the screen
19:40:27 Agent: Alejandro B.: after that, tap o your device listed in the Fitbit app
19:40:33 Agent: Alejandro B.: Let me know what do you see?
19:41:19 Tsaukpaetra: It says "Versa 4 / Clocks / Apps / Tiles "
19:42:15 Tsaukpaetra: However, Apps only shows currentlyinstalled apps, and not the gallery as expected.
19:43:12 Agent: Alejandro B.: Thank you, to have a better understanding, please send me a screenshot of what are you seeing.
19:44:10 Tsaukpaetra: Photo: 2e95acbf-7cd5-4d21-a24f-f190e5938d0c.jpg
19:45:38 Agent: Alejandro B.: Thanks for the screenshot
19:46:04 Agent: Alejandro B.: I want to share with you, that, the apps that you are seeing in the gallery, are all the apps that are available for Versa 4 device.
19:46:35 Tsaukpaetra: That seems a little incongruent with what a Smart Watch is, is it not?
19:48:28 Agent: Alejandro B.: I really understand your point, however, for the moment the apps that are available for the Versa 4 are the ones that you see in Gallery, and seeing the screenshot, that you already have all installed.
19:48:53 Tsaukpaetra: I bought this as an upgrade over my Charge 5 tracker under the understanding that it would be an upgrade, not a lateral transition. 😵
19:49:04 Tsaukpaetra: When will the development kit be released?
19:50:56 Agent: Alejandro B.: For the moment, customer service do not have information about when new apps will be released for Versa 4. Please an eye on the updates on your device and in the Fitbit website for any news about.
19:51:25 Tsaukpaetra: According to the community this has been nearly a yearlong wait, so I'm definitely not holding my breath.
19:52:20 Agent: Alejandro B.: Thank you. I really understand you.
19:52:20 Agent: Alejandro B.: To rate my service today, you may click End Chat and a really quick survey will be available for you
19:52:23 Agent: Alejandro B.: Could you let me know if perhaps you have any additional questions? I'll be happy to help.
19:53:15 Tsaukpaetra: No. I think it is clear what direction Fitbit is going and it is very obviously not in support of its loyal community of users. Have a nice day.
19:53:23 System: The chat is ended.
19:53:24 System: Tsaukpaetra left the chat.
Come to think of it, the rep lied, because Google Maps connector is available via direct-link from the fitbit app, but is not shown here.

Yep. Pitting in a preparatory-entry in the Killed By Google thread eminently....

Interestingly, it seems like some maniac added
hera
(the codename for the mentioned smart watches) to the SDK toolchain last month..... Where the hell have I seen Hexxeh elsewhere?

I was just poking fun at that point as I decided the drones would definitely not be able to help me whatsoever.
In other news, I tried to light a candle for hope and...
Got Jeffed into a new topic where I could receive better answers?

Google is preparing to run it off the road by making it lose traction and spin out of control?

Status: Well. Built the OSS app I wanted and sideloaded it just fine. Has some quirks such as arc-circles appearing as a bunch of wacky lines-in-the-shape-of-a-circle, but that's cosmetic and I don't care.
What I do care is that apparently there's no way to request Device Pin unlock if it is set, so I guess I'm rolling my own (this is an OTP generator app, kinda important not to have it just accessible to anyone with a pulse).
This might be a Smart Watch yet!

Seriously. This was working just fine in the previous version of the watch. How do you fuck that up

Smartly, while you watch.
My gaze does have mystic properties....

@Tsaukpaetra somehow the manufacturers got away claiming anything with an internet connection is a smart thing now
it's another of those words that lost all meaning to marketing
-
@sockpuppet7 People still haven't wised up to this simple fact, so it's a smart move. Things themselves not so much, yeah.

It's ironic because the opposite is true.
I used to have a Fitbit until it broke several times in multiple ways. It failed to sync the like 100KB of data from the watch to the 64GB of phone memory whenever the phone didn't have an internet connection. You know, like what happens if you're hiking or something.Fuck your mandatory online accounts, there is zero technical necessity for it.

It stores the full data for like a week so it's only really an issue if you don't have a data connection for longer than that.
A few hours while hiking or whatever isn't an issue.
-
@loopback0 well, I don't remember the details, but it didn't do other things while not getting a connection. You had to use the app for some stuff (e.g. getting it to sync GPS), and it refused to do that while the phone didn't have internet connection. If it wasn't an issue, I obviously wouldn't have noticed it at all.

A few hours while hiking or whatever isn't an issue.Yup. Even my Fitbit Charge 2 have no problem of saving your activities for like 3 days without the need of offloading data to the App.

Maybe it's got better since then, as mine doesn't have issues when there's no data. The sync catches up when the data's back and everything else just works.

My wife has similar sync issues (I think GPS mostly?) with hers, and she got a brand new a couple of months ago so it's not just on old models. That is indeed very not-smart (and annoying).
