WTDWTF Vidya Awards 2022

  • Considered Harmful

Taking inspiration from the Steam Awards (https://store.steampowered.com/steamawards/nominations):

    Game Of The Moment Award
Maybe it seemed like a good idea at the time. There were gripping screenshots, well-crafted trailer or it just was on sale. Whatever the reason, the winner of this year's Game of the Moment Award is relegated to the dustbin of history in Planck time.

    Love Of Money Award
This game has been out for quite a while, but being greedy fucks they are, these devs continue to milk the title. This game, to this day, is still getting DLCs after all these years.

    I've Got No Friends Award
There are some gamers out there that just don't have any. I know, weird, right? Maybe they're born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline. Either way, disappointment is awaiting those who bother them too much while they play this game.

    Outstanding Crap Graphics Award
Visuals that aspire to real-world graphical fidelity... of 1999. It describes a distinctive look that tries too hard, doesn't get very far and in the end it doesn't even matter.

    Least Innovative Gameplay Award
The designers of this game are the least creative, brain-dead and without surprises. This game "inspired" many sequels that came afterwards, each of them feeling that you've played this exact game before.

Best Game That Also Sucks Award
This is the game that sucks, and is not generally well-regarded. It's the most honest answer you'll make today.

    Outstanding Cheap Game
Some days are sale days, and only a deeply discounted game will hit the spot. It remains never played in your library, and the decision to buy it was as well thought out as many other such life choices you've made. Bravo, you stupid mook.

Calm Down And Turn It Off Award
This game is the antithesis of relaxing. It's difficult, it's triggering, it makes you lose your mind. This game might be the reason you're on blood pressure meds.

Best Game On The Loo Award
You really had to go. So you did! And luckily your phone didn't fall in the toilet bowl like your old one.

You can nominate any game (of any year) in one, many, none or all of the above. Here's your :badger: and you might get some internetpointzz.

@Applied-Mediocrity I genuinely think there were no games worthy of any awards all year. Not even anti-awards. It might've possibly been the most boring year ever for gaming.

  • Banned

Wait, no. Vampire: Survivors is the king of cheap games. Forgot it was this year.

    I almost agree. However:

    • Game Of The Moment Award: The Wandering Village

I played it once. It was fun. Now it seems mostly just tedious.

    • I've Got No Friends Award: Metal: Hellsinger

Normally not into rhythm games, but this one ticks enough boxes. There's no multiplayer, no social shit (OK, I guess there's a leaderboard, but whatever), no mutliplayer events, no twitter integration or whatever else bullshit.

    • Outstanding Crap Graphics Award & Least Innovative Gameplay Award: Fallout 76.

A friend managed to make me try this with them (it was free, OK?). The graphics look like Fallout 3, there's a ton of aliasing everywhere, framerates are garbage, and the game doesn't support 36:9 ultraview screens (the options are: weird stretched upscaling or windowed mode). It's very rare that I get a headache from playing games, but Fallout 76 managed to do this.

Oh, yeah, it's also quite boring. It plays like the single-player fallouts, except that they forgot to put the fun in. (It apparently has a story, but I mentally checked out after about 20 minutes. Long exposition: OK if I'm on my own, but not useful in a multiplayer setting.

    • Best Game That Also Sucks Award: Raft

It was fun because I got to hang out with some friends, and one of them managed to die the most in the most unnecessary ways possible. Also: fuck you rock bird.

    • Outstanding Cheap Game: Everspace

2018 game for 2022 award? Seriously?

It would work for the Love of Money award. Since they keep releasing new upgrade, this total pile of shit must still be making money somehow.

The Least Innovative Gameplay Award is probably a tie between God of War Ragnarök (an exact clone of 2018 God of War with a new story that's boring as fuck) and Horizon: Forbidden West (an exact clone of Horizon: Zero Dawn with a new story that's boring as fuck).

Eh. I'm sure the 2022 version is somehow different from the 2018 one. Besides, in 2018, you had to pay with money for the game, in 2022 you only pay with your sanity.

Either way, it's still pretty crap. I was surprised to learn that it hadn't been cancelled in meantime.

  • Game Of The Moment Award
Bizarrely, Kobo Redux. It's unfinished, it's woefully unbalanced, it's untouched in years and yet... at one point in time it was enthralling.

And for some reason that moment is now.

    Love Of Money Award
I couldn't decide between Europa Universalis IV or Train Simulator Classic. The former because I saw an ad celebrating that it's now on GOG with its 60 DLCs, while the latter because 687 DLCs is a lot.

I'm sure there are other games that have oodles of piss-taking DLC but I'm going to award this to Train Simulator Classic.

    I've Got No Friends Award
"Trying To Understand Gribnit" isn't even in early access yet so I can't nominate that. I think this is going to have to go to something that really captures the spirit of loneliness. I therefore award this to Euro Truck Simulator 2 - not only is it a primarily single player game, but it's a single player experience roleplaying a loneliness-first single player lifestyle!

    Outstanding Crap Graphics Award
This has to go to Babylon's Fall. I don't know what the developers were thinking but in all the trailers - where you want it to look best, and you have the time and money to give it the best possible chance ahead of release - they did that. They even seem proud of having a game that looks like someone rubbed sticky fingers all over the camera, like this was somehow oddly deliberate.

    Least Innovative Gameplay Award
This award goes to Assassin's Creed {{ adjective(current_year_AC) }} for its recent improvements in {{ get_name('escort_mission', 'AC') }} gameplay.

Best Game That Also Sucks Award
So many to choose from so I went with the most objective criteria I could find: lowest ranking game on Steam, by votes, that inexplicably, I also own.

There were two contenders for this category based on being in the top 10 worst ranked games on Steam that I own, being a toss-up between Spacebase DF-9 and Godus.

I wanted to like both. I liked neither. I hated Godus so much for so many reasons that I went out of my way to go to a conference just to sit in a room with 22cans people and say something in person about how I felt. Therefore I feel this must 'win' this award.

    Outstanding Cheap Game
I have so many of these, the cursed satan-spawn of indie bundles even more crap than the average Humble Bundle got to be. I'm going to pick any of the 'hidden games' on my Steam account that haven't been played because that's how they would all have been acquired, and they will never be installed.

This award's plucky young recepient is Bad Hotel.

Calm Down And Turn It Off Award
This one is a pivotal award for me. Upcoming and aspiring artists can try their hand at creating artwork in the dazzling entity that is... GIMP, but it angered me so much that I went and bought Photoshop for my own pretentious attempts at 'art'.

Best Game On The Loo Award
This is the part where I demonstrate I am not a hardcore gamer and admit to playing Merge Mansion in these rare moments.

    {{test-category}}
This one goes to {{that-game}}, for its {{test-adjective}} {{test-verb}} to its {{test-noun}}. Props to its {{test-developer}} for ground-breaking work in {{test-genre}}.

Train Simulator is one of my favorite games, but I'm not going to disagree with you on this. It certainly does have many, many DLCs, and they're not cheap.

I haven't played it in a while, and this is the first I've noticed that it's been renamed Train Simulator Classic instead of Train Simulator Date.now().getFullYear().

Also, Steam decided I should get an achievement. Just for clicking on the game in my library. Not playing it. Not even launching it. Just opening the game's page in my Steam library. The achievement? Completing all scenarios in a DLC I've never played and I'm pretty sure I don't even own — from the name, it appears to be set in Italy, and I play with American trains, so I certainly wouldn't have paid money for that DLC. :wtf:

"Trying To Understand Gribnit" isn't even in early access yet

Wow, I guess I must have been a beta tester and not even realized it. I quickly gave up on this and uninstalled it, because it gave me splitting headaches.

Not like I'd pay real munniez for that but the trailer sure looks fun.

My vote would be for EUIV (if only because I don't play TSC), but I'm thinking it should be more a "Lifetime achievement award" for Paradox Interactive.

  • @GOG yeah, that’s definitely a contender.

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

@Arantor And yet - CKIII is on sale, and I'm prolly gonna buy it, fool that I am.

I can also recommended The VelociPastor, as movies go. Only for holding a plotline together, but still - they did it.

@GOG I bought CK3 on release and I don't regret it at all. I started as Silesian prince and wanted to conquer Poland. Instead I inherited Byzantium.

Something like that happened in my last CK2 game: I was the target of a Crusade for Saxony, and the Crusaders decided to sack Constantinople instead.

And I had been preparing so carefully, too.

The Best, Worst & Blandest of 2022 (Zero Punctuation) – 07:23
    — The Escapist

What surprised me the most is that he found 15 (well, 10) games worth talking about from all 2022. I could swear there were no more than 6. In total.
