Where stillwater shoves Indian music down your throat
-
I made this thread because
-
I think Indian music has been grossly misrepresented everywhere. There is just Bollywood or Punjabi music, this abomination or when A.R.Rahman got his oscar and this exploded on the interwebs for a while. Not even the tip of iceberg.
-
My life became infinitely richer after I got introduced to some western bands
(Pink Floyd and Porcupine tree alone make about 70% of what I am) and I just wanna pay back the favour. -
Y'all are missing out on some seriously good shit and I'm fixing it, one song at a time.
Let's get started
HUGE DISCLAIMER : Some of these tracks are acquired taste. I'll be posting only my most frequently played spotify playlist. Only the best for y'all.

Personal favorite. 11/10. I envy the person who listens to it for the first time!
-
Fast paced with some needless prog metal ish stuff thrown in the middle. Highly recommended. 15/10

A. R. Rahman Meets Berklee - Bombay Theme (1 of 16) – 08:33
— Berklee College of MusicI'll just leave this here.

Any one on the other side of the world that's a friend gets this sooner or later. Enjoy!
-
You remind me: I still have about a dozen or so records fo Sitar etc. music some where in the shelf...
-
The European part of this cultural exchange can be found in the Lounge.

Only the best for y'all.

The needless metal stuff came in just as I as upvoting your post.
It is a bit jarring, yes.
-
@Zecc The composer's misplaced enthusiasm about wanting to make prog. I hope you liked the rest of it!

Colonial Cousins - Indian Rain Video | Mtv Unplugged – 08:17
— SonyMusicIndiaVEVOThis holds a special nostalgic place for about two generations of the country. 20/10 would recommend!

I didn't hate that section, even. It was just rather sudden.

This is pretty awsome.
Also, they said Kurwa.

Charanjit Singh - Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat (1982) – 49:46
— Ronald Grinder
Pioneer af. Completely obscure film and wedding musician makes this even more obscure album, and twenty years later someone digs it up and discovers he was just at least half a decade ahead of the trend in electronic music.
-
@LaoC This is super interesting. I should check this out! Thanks.

Pray For Me Brother | A.R. Rahman | BlaaZe – 05:18
— A. R. RahmanThis is one of those tracks I keep coming back to after so many years. This one really speaks to me in ways I cannot articulate. It has got a super awesome melody, Rap, chorus-y stuff, a sliver of carnatic music. Melting pot of everything I love. Enjoy!
Why the fuck is the thumbnail not showing up here?

I'm leaving the video here too. I'd highly recommend this movie; If you shove the cringy bollywood shit that is sprinkled throughout the movie aside, this is all about how someone who works for NASA struggles to bridge the reality of him living in the US and the dire circumstances back home in India and decides to act on it. It's called Swades which roughly translates to homeland and it has a 86 and 91 on rotten tomatoes and 8.1 on IMDB.
As far as the song is considered, you know how "Take me roads, Country home" gets you nostalgic even if you don't know where West Virginia is, yeah this is the indian version of that, more or less.

Sometimes the thumbnail generator fails. There's no rhyme or reason to it, and this forum's NodeBB install hasn't been updated in a while.

It's not even consistent for the same post. In FF on Linux I just got an embed for 's post but not for mine, now with FF on Android it's the other way round.

@LaoC I think the issue is that it's using a third party service that has throttling issues.

We use Youtube's API but I think it times out sometimes. Hmm...maybe I need to reboot the docker container again. That seemed to help sometimes in the past.
-
@boomzilla There is not a single scenario where rebooting a docker container does not help in some way.
-
@stillwater I'm not that into music myself, but I do find old Indian movies pretty cool, though I've only watched a few. I like that some of them have different themes than you would find in America.
Three that I liked (though I don't remember the titles of all of them):
-
The Chess Players
-
A postmaster who got transferred to a village and was a father figure to a servant girl (kind of movie wouldn't get made today)
-
Bajrangi Bhaijaan
This might deserve its own topic, if you have anything to add.

@sockpuppet7 such an Indian giver.
-
@jinpa I'll get to an Indian movies thread one of these days. Too many movies to choose from!

At the moment, facing my monitor, my ears are oriented north-south.
