the jury is still out on the whole X thing
X is a terrible name for anything, except maybe a comic character or hot pepper.
X is fine if that is the name you started with and the name you have been called for the last 15 years. But now, every reference to X has to say:
X (formerly Twitter)
Because if you just say X then 99.9% of the population will have no idea what you are talking about.
The logo is fucking stupid too and no one recognises it. I was listening to a podcast with a brand strategist on it. He basically pissed away billions in free advertisement. The Twitter logo was so bland and innocuous that you could put it almost anywhere and it wouldn't look out of place. It's going to be dropped from a lot of places now because you would have to design around it instead of just dropping it in.
Even the idea of just X is terrible. Years of being associated with porn and edgy teenagers should have killed it immediately if he had anyone sane advising him.
-
@DogsB Iām sure he had people pleading with him not to rebrand it but he always wanted x.com to be a thing. See PayPalX back in the day.

Interestingly enough,
y.com
is still up for grabs, andz.com
just shows some moon language stuff about something from Hong Kong and a hot soup?

He probably did, but from all accounts, he's very resistant to advice he doesn't like.

@sockpuppet7 twitter.com still doesn't redirect to x.com, diluting the SEO juice.

I am eternally saddened that Firaxis didn't get that domain first.

Yes, Twitter is a site that has absolutely no technical problems. (This is just the latest, itās been flaky for ages but this is the most broken Iāve seen it lately.)

Thatās just your ad blocker removing all non-organic content as designed

Gotta fit ads in before what the user is looking for, or they'll see what they want and stop looking and won't see your ads

Twitter has been getting worse this last year. Maybe all those laid off staff did actually do something.
-
To be fair, there weren't a lot less broken when said staff was still employed, either.

Thereās a good chance that a ton of people there did nothing useful and yet the three people who did something useful were also let go.
Besides, while āsoftware doesnāt rotā isnāt strictly true, they had to actively introduce all those new bugs since then. So firing 100% of employees instead of 50% wouldāve probably resulted in higher quality.

Conferences on š are coming soon! You'll be able to host meetings just like on Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams.
-
You'll have to split your conference into 30-second segments.

If it's limited to 1 segment, I'm onboard with the idea.

@loopback0 Because they can.

ā¦ alternatively,
@loopback0 Because beaver.
-
@loopback0 hopefully limited to 140 characters.

Is that shit even official? I mean, this could be any random crypto-bro moron. And nobody knows what the blue checkmark means anymore than Stallone does.

It could but they regularly announce Twitter stuff with Elon retweeting it. I assume they're really more involved in Twitter than their profile suggests.

@loopback0 yet on another computer it's still twitter.com - no redirect

I'm too lazy to disable no script for the site so I can't use it.
They do offer this link of supported browsers.
Please note that compatible browsers are included with most operating systems:
Windows 10 - Edge Android - Chrome MacOS / iOS - Safari
What am I supposed to do on windows 11?

For my sins I very occasionally browse mastodon.gamedev.place and a couple of connected servers.

I thought that's where all the people who hate free speech went after St. Elon started allowing X users to speak truth.
-
@HardwareGeek alternative truth.
-
@HardwareGeek no, Mastodon is much more like the diaspora forums of old, where you're subject to the whims of individual server owners and their folly. Except this time you can be disconnected from the wider universe while you're at it, not just a local hub.
-
Thanks I guess? What's the point?
-
@loopback0 one presumes Elon or some of his friends were caught liking things they probably shouldnāt, and need to cover it up so they can go on liking things they probably shouldnāt.
Without getting into territory, the manās āabsolute free speechā has been repeatedly demonstrated to not be so absolute on the platform unless its speech he agrees with. There is no way this is not unrelated.
-

Triple negation ...
In other news, their amazing team of engineers moving things over to š.com are a bunch of monkeys. The few times I actually click a twatter link I consistently get an error message "Something went wrong, but don't fret - let's give it another shot". And a "try again" button, that of course doesn't do anything. But change the url to twitter.com, as Dog intended, and it works again. Well, as much as it used to, anyway.

Eh, this sort of thing goes all ways. I have mixed feelings about this, but it's probably for the best.

Yeah, he's far from perfect, but definitely a major step up from what we had before.

@boomzilla is that why my feed is constantly bombarded with far right politicians, and ladies who want me to subscribe to their knockoff OnlyFans despite this being content I regularly mute and block?
-
@topspin I like how if I use Twitter.com on my iPad, I get redirected to x.com, but if I use Twitter.com on my laptop I donāt. And the bug around notifications where it tells me I have notifications, I go to the notifications page where it tells me I have no new notifications, but a refresh shows me every time that I do in fact have new notifications.
