Garage content in a non-garage thread?

it's not like anyone else cares about the distinction between Garage and non-Garage in this part of this thread.
I do, and I may not be the only one.
We already have several Garage threads about COVID, there's no need to turn this one into yet another.
I agree.
I'm a big supporter of the Garage/non-Garage divide.
Which is why it bothers me that people post Garage stuff in this topic.
But if it's OK for some people to post Garage stuff in this topic, I don't see why @Gąska shouldn't also be allowed to.
Could you (or anyone else) link some posts that you thought should not have been made in the COVID thread in the General Category?
-
The first one is
@kazitor said in Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!:
Can anybody please explain to me this bizarre intersection between “it’s just a flu” and “I need to ingest all of the antiparasitics” ? Please.
I feel that he's deliberately mischaracterizing the views of the people he's talking about.
"It's just the flu" means that most people will be fine if they get it, usually with the connotation that the particular anti-COVID measure we're talking about (mandatory vaccinations, but also lockdowns, masking, remote schooling, not letting Republican observers challenge Democrat ballot box stuffing, etc) is excessive.
The flu is, by definition just the flu. And people take (ingest) prophylactic medicine like Emergen-C for it because they don't want to miss work and don't want to get other people sick.
If you're deliberately mischaracterizing your opponents views, there's a place for that.
Now, you're deliberately asking me for this, so I feel justified in typing that into this particular textbox, even though this is the Meta category.
But under normal circumstances, my explanation of my problem with his post would be Garage-worthy too. And if it's impossible for someone to respond to your post without being Garage-y, what does that say about your post?
I would have flagged the post when I saw it, except that people were already posting Garagey replies to him.
Other posts that are the same idea include this and this.
This post deliberately conflates the argument "the vaccines weren't tested at all" with the argument he's actually replying to, which is "the vaccines weren't tested enough by the standards of the guy he's talking to".
Garage-y posts from the other side of the Garage include here (by you), here (by me), and the Gąska post I was replying to initially.
-
@GuyWhoKilledBear hmm...I guess I didn't see those as really garage. Certainly not mine where I tried to be very non-garagey. I guess I didn't believe that @kazitor was the one doing the misrepresentation. But yeah, that definitely had potential to blow up.
It's kind of tricky in that thread since everything about it is "current-affairs"-ish, but it's something big enough that it's affecting everyone all over the world (INB4 Sentinelese, etc).
-
FWIW, it did occur to me that my reply (cited above) may be borderline for outside the garage, but by that time I'd already posted it. It did kinda turn out sounding more disparaging than I'd intended it. Not sure what the best way to handle that situation is: Delete it? Self-flag? I agree that the post I replied to was garage-baity the way it was worded.
That thread is really tricky and it has been loitering in front of the garage door the whole while, that's kind of unavoidable with such a political and emotionally charged topic; to be honest I never thought it would make that long. I'd appreciate if we can keep it going outside of the garage without too much of an escalation and I'm sorry if I worked against that.
-
I've tried in that thread to stick to either matters relating to the science of it (which is thoroughly fascinating and complicated in the detail) or, if policy, policy where the reverse just would just make you jump and shout “no, that's not how this works, that's not how any of this works”. Alas, far too many politicians have been shown by this whole thing to be idiots. As have many ordinary people; the politicians have mostly not been stand-out features of this one way or another. With exceptions I don't plan to list here; this is not a thread.
I cope here to enjoy neat tech and science, and to laugh at the dumb. Alas, that's sometimes laughing at myself, but I at least try to keep that infrequent…

That's like saying too much water has been shown to be wet.

Emergen-C
Emergen-C is vaporware - they've been even subjected to a lawsuit where they had to settle due to no scientific evidence for their claims whatsoever. Which is about par for the course for all those vitamin (and whatever else) supplements. Unless you're suffering from a serious and constant deficiency for one in particular, taking those will do exactly zilch - well, not "zilch" - you'll fill the coffers of "big pharma".
This reminds me: I muted the Covid thread for that very reason. I'll do that with this one as well.

Maybe, just maybe, I’m not talking about you or things related to what you might think.
There ARE people that think the virus/pandemic is harmless and/or entirely fake, and simultaneously think they need a particular treatment for it. If that’s not you, great! Not every comment about morons refers to you.

If you want to call people "bizarre" and "morons" for not agreeing with you on politics, then maybe, just maybe, you should do it in the Garage version of the topic.

You really don’t think “it’s fake” and “it needs treatment” are blatant contradictions? This has nothing to do with politics.
Once again, again, you are telling people what they mean by the words they write. There’s a place for tilting at strawmen.
-

I seem to recall this was part of a specifically stated reason why I don't go in the Garage because I found it tiring and frustrating for people to invent new meanings for what I wrote then bash me over the head with it.
I don't care if others want to do that, just not here, kthx.

Then make this topic there. It's against the rules for you to take political pot shots in the Meta category.

Yes, absolutely. A real person, multiple times, very passionately.
Seems “bizarre,” right?
I’m so very sorry for attempting to understand a viewpoint. Maybe let’s not add a political slant to things then proclaim it should have been garaged before that.

You were trying to understand him by calling him a bizarre moron to strangers on the internet? OK. Sounds good.

What are the chances that this "real person, multiple times, very passionately" isn't a politician/political commentator/activist?

If they're here, they're far more likely to be an inactivist…

I have a nose around that thread now and then. I've always been puzzled by its existence. Someone pointed out to me that non-garagy citizens want to talk about it too but it strikes me as too contentious as an issue to live outside the garage. It would need a moderator to ban some of us(me!) from the topic. If people can remain civil I say leave it there but if the usual suspects(me too!) start throwing up shit it may have to go. So far it looks civil enough.
-
@DogsB said in Garage content in a non-garage thread?:

Agreed. It's not like everybody needs to agree with each other. Most of the more inane trolling and the "circular shouting matches" have been largely absent from the thread.
Stuff in the garage has always had a tendency to get rather polarized and echochamber-y. The fact that this isn't happening here is somewhat refreshing. Even if that means stepping away from the keyboard on occasion and not responding to certain posts and/or calling the posters idiots. (Difficult to do, I know.)

On the whole, the General COVID topic does an OK job of not getting Garagey. But this topic exists because I saw a particular set of posts as over the line.

This is mostly true about the topic as a whole.
But in the posts I called out, the Garage-oriented people who posted held their tongues. Even though Kazitor and a few other non-Garage-oriented people didn't feel that same obligation.

I'm part of a lot of echo chambers where you're allowed to say exactly what Kazitor said, but you'll get punished for saying what I said. Some of them are online, but there's real life places like that too.
Personally, I think the Garage isn't an echo chamber, but it just looks that way because so many other places are echo chambers where the views expressed in the garage are not allowed.
In any case, if you want not-the-Garage to not turn into an echo chamber, you can't let only one side take political shots.
