No, everything rounded!!

Back to rounded! Not just the UI, the Windows logo seems to be going though a similar (d)evolution. Except unlike the UI, they seem to be far more committed to continuing the "improvements."

I've wondered what that was all about.
"Where do you want to go today?" - "Oh, we'll just do a 360 so we're not going anywhere" or
"It will work about 98.6% of the year"?- Windows 1
That one is taken. OK, they could reasonably assume that the subset of people who are old enough to know it and would still be willing to buy "Windows 1 2.0" have dementia.
- Windows Series X
- That will be the Pro version. The home version will be Windows Series S
Nonono, you got that wrong, the home version is P for Private, and of course we have H for HPC, The Abomination Formerly Known As "Windows for Datacenters".

Just do the same as with the xbone: call it Windows One (spelled out), which is very very distinct from Windows 1(.0).

More like a Roman fenestra that is. The original was closer in spirit to the Germanic wind-hole that used to have some sort of sewn-together (and frayed on at least one side) rags hung in front of it to keep the stink in.

Poor choice of words. Not so much desktop replacement as it is extender. I use Object Dock from Stardock. One day I'll have LXDE on windows.

At some point I started using SideSlide (because I'm a cheapskate and I like free stuff) as an extender, as you called.
Even though it served its purpose rather well I stopped using because... I don't know, I guess I never got into the habit.

If Microsoft had just continued to sell Windows 7 for the last 12 years and did nothing but patch bugs that are found and add support for new hardware (e.g., Windows 7 doesn't natively support USB 3.0) they would sell just as many copies of Windows.
If they don't change things enough, things like reactos and wine could get compatible enough to do some damage

Most reactors do nothing when wine is added, but the operator tends to be less resilient.

I remember when there was an experiment where someone disguised Windows Vista and told people it was like Windows 9 or something and people were all impressed (so the advertisement claims). Wonder if they're going to do the same thing again?

Microsoft has a history of bad naming decisions. Just look at the Xbox.
(Also: my college roommate thought that Win2000 was the direct successor of Win98, when Win98's successor was actually WinME.)
Microsoft's entire history with Windows has been like some sort of bizarre ADD nightmare.
Let's use standard version numbers like all software.
No, let's use the year of release.
No, let's use meaningless names. XP! Vista!
Back to version numbers.Standard marketing bullshit. Names are whatever sounds good. Some numbers sound better than others. Some years sound better than others. Some marketing people disagree with other marketing people on what sounds good. Some names sound good for business people only and some sound good for home users only (ever noticed that the only people who call their consumers "users" are drug dealers and software companies?)
Except Windows 7 is really Windows 6.1
And Windows 8 is really Windows 6.2
And Windows 10 is really Windows 6.4, no wait, we'll change Windows 10 to version 10.0The reasons are purely technical and the answer is essentially the same as why ASLR isn't enabled by default.
And then there is the UI.
Designers have to justify their permanent hire status somehow.
If Microsoft had just continued to sell Windows 7 for the last 12 years and did nothing but patch bugs that are found and add support for new hardware (e.g., Windows 7 doesn't natively support USB 3.0) they would sell just as many copies of Windows.
And we'd still be unable to snap a window to the inner edge between two displays. While I hate change for the sake of change as much as the next guy, there are some genuine improvements in Windows 10 that I can't live without nowadays, so overall I'm glad MS is still trying to improve things even though they didn't really have to improve anything since Windows 98.
-

Lack of window snapping is one of the things high on my list of "reasons I'm not very impressed with macOS". And life without dual monitors is painful, so yeah. I agree with you.

macOS has something like that, but afaik not as convenient as Win+Left/Right/Up/... To make up for it it has far nicer virtual desktop support with 3 finger swipes.
Also, KDE still wins when it comes to window manager features.

It has window snapping? At least the same split view as Windows does.
MacOS is also way better at remembering window positions than Windows.

You can split two windows, if they're full screen. And only horizontally. Which gets in everyone else's way.
Plus, it's horribly inconvenient to do and requires you to work in full screen mode. "Full screen mode" =/= "takes up the whole screen".

And I've been using some random closed-source freeware program I found somewhere years ago that I don't remember the name of anymore but it worked well enough for me. Yes, there were shitty workarounds, and we can argue whose workaround was shittier, but the point is Windows 10 allow that out of the box and that's a good thing.

In a better universe that would be true. 2000 was more solid than xp but had shit gaming support so I had to jump. Its how I feel about Debian now.
That's true.

W/e the basic dozen are all you need to keep hot, as in immediate, and then the superset that accounts for an entire day's exigencies is way less than a dozen times that size. And, some attention has been given to approximate Huffman command lengths.

Re the Win 2000 looking like the successor to 98 - as I remember it this was deliberate, they wanted to con the casual users onto the NT stack because people were beginning to realise that the 'consumer Windows running inside DOS' model of 3.x, 95, 98 was a bad idea and impossible to secure.
They only came out with ME when previews of 2000 showed that a lot of casual users' applications and games wouldn't run on 2000, so they hacked up ME as an interim measure while they put their effort into fixing that for XP.
-
*sigh*
-
@Applied-Mediocrity That makes me wonder: why not Windows Phone apps? Oh, wait, that’s probably because they managed to kill off the viability of that ages ago already.
