But some shops have said they will continue to ask people to wear them.
Rail operators also said passengers would be expected to wear face coverings. But all said they would encourage, not force, customers to comply.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said masks will remain mandatory on Transport for London services, calling on people to "do the right thing".
Public health guidance urging people to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces when coming into contact with strangers will remain, the government said.
Organisations will also be able to choose if they require Covid passes from those visiting their venues.
As an added bonus, without government mandates... [checks category] some people loudly announce who they are.

Which is fine. People should be able to decide to do that just like I'm able to decide to avoid them.

Absolutely correct. During a meeting of my son's Boy Scout troop recently, one of the parents made noises about requiring masks again at troop meetings. The other parents rightfully said that we won't require them, but people can wear them if they wish - which is what we were already doing anyway.

"But some shops have said they will continue to ask people to wear them."
Most stores around here have signs to the effect of, "Masks are recommended." I consider that about equivalent to asking me to wear one. But I only wear one when required, which at this point is government buildings (including public libraries) and medical facilities.
And, ugh...my physical therapy has advanced to where it's a bit of a workout, definitely breaking a sweat. It really sucks to be wearing a mask at that point. I feel really bad for the knee people who are doing stuff like running on treadmills.

An analysis of each of these three groups support the conclusion that lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality. More specifically, stringency index studies find that lockdowns in Europe and the United States only reduced COVID-19 mortality by 0.2% on average. SIPOs were also ineffective, only reducing COVID-19 mortality by 2.9% on average. Specific NPI studies also find no broad-based evidence of noticeable effects on COVID-19 mortality.

@lolwhat Science does change. One of the fundamental tenets of science is that you refine or replace old theories as conflicting evidence is found. However, I'd be really interested to know what evidence changed now that wasn't known a few months (or more) ago.

The "I'm being called a hypocrite for not wearing my mask" data point has grown to a critical mass. That's all.

@dcon that's measured with a real, or the other thing?

@topspin $10 it's the clbuttic correlation/causation mistake. People who are so paranoid they wear N95 masks are also paranoid about other things, such as going in public or sanitizing everything.

In the third quarter, the survey shows, incurred claims counts were 37.7% higher than a pre-pandemic baseline, with a nearly 50-50 split between claims directly tied to Covid-19 and those that weren’t, according to R. Dale Hall, managing director of research at the society, a professional organization. The group is still assessing fourth-quarter data.

Chicago lifted almost all COVID restrictions this Monday. Today I did my first maskless shopping since this whole thing started. About 90% of other customers at Walmart didn't get the memo. Including a few chin-maskers.

I don't wear masks anywhere for... can't remember, 18 months I think. During this time there were places that tried to enforce masks on different level of seriousness, but outside of state owned places and medical facilities people generally dgaf about masks.
But not all of them, of course. Every time I go to my local grocery store, among all of customers there's one or two people in masks. Sometimes it's someone suffering from covid paranoia, sometimes it's just a sheep.
On Monday I went' to the store in the evening - I'm standing in line with some 5 other people, 8-9 people total in the store - a guy in front of me turns, looks around the store carefully and proclaims: "Noone wearing a mask, not a single one. Everything feels normal again, thank god for that!".

Speaking of masks. Today I saw a guy in a car wearing a mask, and was passed by a guy in a bike that wore a con diaper. And we never had any such requirements, just asking nicely to wear them in public transport during rush hour.

Oh sure, you get occasional crazies around here too. Like that woman I saw last week, standing on a bus stop at 11PM, alone, not a single person in 100m radius.

I wear my mask occasionally. (a) It's somewhat chilly, rainy and windy outside, and the mask keeps the face nicely warm for now. (b) It seems to trigger some people, which is an automatic win. (c) No, random person in the city, I don't want to talk to you.

Interpretation: FCM mandates in schools were not associated with lower SARS-CoV-2 incidence or transmission, suggesting that this intervention was not effective. Instead, age-dependency was the most important factor in explaining the transmission risk for children attending school.

Meh. Farce or not, you guys are lagging behind. Nobody's been wearing masks in public transport for a while. Even fucking Switzerland got rid of mandates in public transport weeks ago. Air travel was the last place that mandated it, and those guys got rid of it (at least the ones that I traveled with.)

Air France still mandates masks. Or did when I went to Mexico.

Had to put on mask on an outbound flight a few weeks ago, didn't need one on the return one. But that was within Europe. Probably depends on the company and destination(s).

Yeah, probably. Living in Sweden sort of spoils you with the personal freedom.

CDC end mandate on ride-share companies, as per email from Uber.
Uber included the following:
Remember: Many people may still feel safer wearing a mask because of personal or family health situations, so please be respectful of their preferences.
In most cases, I give the situation and people around for mask wearing and/or social distancing.
I don't really go anywhere so it isn't that big of a deal right now.
But if I get in our elevator and the other person has a mask, I will put mine on if I have one and stand as far as possible.
If we are outside, I give them distance. Not putting a mask on outside.
If a driver asked me to wear a mask, I would have no problem with with that. His car, his rules.
This is all funny in contrast to the first day the playgrounds were open in NYC in June 2020. My daughter's previous teacher was there, they were about to hug, and she (the teacher) looks at me, go ahead. At 7, she wasn't at risk.

SBB (train service): https://news.sbb.ch/artikel/95750/coronavirus-sicher-reisen-dank-maskenpflichtBoth state that the mandates were lifted since beginning of April (though you are allowed to use a mask if you wish). SBB has an additional section on international travel, which essentially says that rules will depend on the destination country.
