Editor's style buttons (and corresponding hotkeys) don't always result in valid Markdown

As pointed out by @levicki, the editor's application of bold/italic/other styles (per hotkey or clicking one of the style buttons) does not properly handle a selection that crosses boundaries between paragraphs.
For example, when selecting
[some\n\ntext]
as shown below, and then clicking the B button for bold text:this is [some text] that crosses two paragraphs
The expected result is that the selection becomes bold, which requires this Markdown:
this is **some** **text** that crosses two paragraphs
this is some
text that crosses two paragraphs
But the actual result is that the style is broken:
this is **some text** that crosses two paragraphs
this is **some
text** that crosses two paragraphs

I'm sure that a PR to fix this would have a good chance of being accepted.
