How do I Windows?
-
I want to pass on a laptop and I want to put the Windows back on it before that. It has a sticker with a license key for Windows 10 Pro Refurb. When I search for a Windows 10 image to reinstall they all want to shill me their iso downloader exe which in all likelyhood wouldn't run on my systems. How can I download an image to put on a USB stick? I don't think this should be hard. Surely Microsoft offers boot images to copy on a stick these days? Right? Somehow I can't seem to find the place. Where should I look?
-
@gleemonk Do you have access to an MSDN (or whatever they're calling it these days) account? They have clean ISO's for download there. Or if you know anybody with a physical disc, just borrow it.
-
This looks pretty good: https://tb.rg-adguard.net/public.php
I'd verify the SHA of the iso before using it
-
Edit: the media creation tool doesn't work on Linux
-
@TimeBandit Ah, so you don't even need MSDN anymore...
-
@mott555 You just need a Linux computer
-
@mott555 You haven't needed MSDN to get a Windows ISO from Microsoft for a long time.

Well....... there's
- MSDN/MyVisualStudio downloads
- Windows Media Creation Tool (is an exe but from microsoft so....)
- the pirate bay (just be sure to get the one that isn't preinfected with viruses)
- steal or borrow a CD from a frenemy

i mean yeah, but it's like trying to be a generic installer for windows applications which traditionally were basically "i run this program that can do ANYTHING to my computer because i run it as admin and i'm trusting it to just install this other program and nothing else."
like that's no system to base a government o- err I mean that's not a healthy system to have in place to try to weld a package installer from, particularly not when you ant to make adoption of the manager easy so you need a large library of applications available to install, including those from companies that would laugh at you if you suggest packaging up their application differently just for you.
it does the best it can based on the environment it finds itself in.... and honestly it does a pretty decent job considering the hole it finds itself in....
it can do better, and it's improving..... but yeah it's impressive what it's managed.

@Vixen IOW, Windows was not properly engineered

this is not what I said in the slightest.

I do not approve nor do I condone this interpretation of my words.
Would you like some popcorn? I just made it fresh.

Yes, that website is a good source for Windows ISOs. I have used it in the past and there is nothing suspicious going on.

Thanks everyone! I'd let myself get distracted by something more along my interests and only came back now to the sinful task of installing Windows.
Now I still don't know how the install will go. I'm ready with some consolation chocolate for either case

@gleemonk if you need a windows virtual machine to run the windows ISO downloader program that only runs on Windows, try https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/

I'm slightly late to the party, but https://www.microsoft.com/EN-US/software-download/windows10ISO seems to give out direct download links. (inb4 link is already dead)
Edit: 'd

@aitap IIRC, it used to years ago, but now (at least on Windows; maybe it's Different™ on other OSes) it just offers the downloader tool
