If you want people to play your games more often, maybe you should reduce the cooldown?

Counter-intuitively, games that force players to wait to play them are actually more addictive than those that allow you to play as much as you want.
Which is why you find that mechanic in almost every freemium game.
-
@error The random free guess mechanic is great for that too
-
@error Freemium games make money because people DON'T want to wait.

Also true, but the waiting is actually a key element of the addiction factor. Also, some concept of currency, which is given value by its artificial scarcity, which is then sold to the user at what seems like a bargain...
Hmm...

If this was true, nobody would get addicted by regular games.
-
@Gąska This is a pretty well-researched principle in game design, and the top grossing mobile games reflect it.
They're all basically Skinner boxes.
-
@Gąska It's not the only factor, but due to some shit that I've forgotten the specifics of from psychology, it's a very strong contributor.

I don't know of any game, much less a top-grossing game, that limits how much you can play even if you pay for everything.

Also, the mobile game my girlfriend is completely addicted to, allows you to buy unlimited play only for hours at a time. You have to keep paying, and paying, and paying, or waiting, and waiting, and waiting.
-
@error exactly. Pay or wait. Their entire business model relies on people not willing to wait. If waiting was significantly more addicting than not waiting, nobody would do that.

That's because they want to monetize. The rational behavior would be for the user to quit - the games aren't even that fun! If they could play as much as they wanted, they would realize this. The impulse to keep playing becomes strong enough from the waiting that eventually it overpowers their desire not to spend money.
-
I got completely addicted to a game one time that was literally all about clicking on things and waiting for things. That was the extent of the gameplay. There were lots of flashy bits and virtual currencies et cetera but the gameplay was just that.
I was a fucking slave to that game for days, and I hated every moment of it, but it had timed everything just right to be irresistible.

Exactly. And the best way to monetization is addiction. If waiting itself was addicting, game designers would maximize waiting even for paying players.
the games aren't even that fun!
To you. But they are to your girlfriend, for example. Because they're fun. Mostly due to underhanded psychological tricks like carefully dosed rewards, but still.
If they could play as much as they wanted, they would realize this.
The popularity of clicker games show otherwise.
The impulse to keep playing becomes strong enough from the waiting that eventually it overpowers their desire not to spend money.
No. The impulse to keep playing becomes strong from reward scheme. Waiting is there just to prevent you from getting rewarded too much without paying. It doesn't create addiction itself, it just creates a reason for an already addicted person to spend money.

@error it seems there are some language difficulties involved. It sounds like you still believe that not doing some thing makes you more addicted to that thing.
