@Zerosquare basically a slightly more turquoise and yellow (precursor to teal and orange) and fancier version of Windows 2000.

I know I didn’t have a computer that could play MP3s while I did pretty much anything else on it until around 2000
MP3 didn't even exist until the late 90s, IIRC.

Even XP's beta theme was prettier than the one we ended up with.
Depends. Do you like your theming to be done by Fisher Price?
The silver XP theme wasn't too bad.
-
@hungrier: : it was actually released in 1993, but didn't became popular until the late 90s.
-
@Zerosquare I looked it up and was about to edit that into my post.

It was less awful than the default one, yeah. There were a few more official themes, but for some reason they were only released for the Media Center and Embedded editions of Windows XP:

Largely because by that time, a computer that could play MP3s while you did pretty much anything else on it had become affordable to the average person :)

You could set it to the Windows 98 style too.

Windows 10 can be set to it too, IIRC. I think everything except the thing works with the "Classic" theme...

Alternatively buy 10 16Gb USB sticks, add Linux and sell for $35 each (30% discount!!!)...
The hard part is the "add Linux" bit though.
I mean, most people don't know shit about computers. So asking them to create a Linux Boot disc on a usb drive is like asking them to replace the serpentine belt in their car. At some point they'd rather just pay someone else to do it.

[...] most people don't know shit about computers. [...] a Linux Boot disc [...]
How would those people even know or care about Linux?

They won't. That's the point.
They just need to know "stick this in your broken computer and it'll mostly work again" without really needing to know how the magic happens.

And some weird people can do both without any instructions
